Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Hogwarts school, its founders, the sorting system, and- most closely- the sorting hat.
As we know, Hogwarts school was founded when four 10th century witches and wizards realized that they had the same yearning to creating the worlds best magic school. Their names were Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw.
Once these four powerful witches and wizards had created the school- they decided that they would create some kind of system for dividing the schools students. Thus, the house system and sorting hat were born.
However, what I want to highlight today is that the sorting hat had more than just one purpose. It wasn’t JUST a means of sorting students- it also had another function. You see, Godric Gryffindor laid another, SECRET enchantment on the hat, and it had to do with his sword.

huffle puff, an armor of multiple miniatured tanks for each segment for the armor but turrets on both sides of the pieces (top and bottom of gauntlets' for example) with full fire power and magical kinetic blasts effecting ghosts for a gift of courage, and raven claw, gets a rocket wing jet pack replete with lance rapiers (lances with swords on the end) talon gauntlets, and slitheryn gets a thief hood and an Arab head dress, where the thieves hood has them more fearful and less depending on whether they are behind someone's back and or seen and/ or their presence felt or whereabouts known and can teleport you behind [people's back, under certain conditions, and the Islamic headdress let's you be brave only when hiding behind women or human sheildsbut let's you energize up bravery points to be used for the thief's teleportation ability. Both clothing can be changed almost immediately with intent or thought, but only when enough points and other requirements are racked up can it be done unimpeded.

Godric: His Dueling Sword Helga: Enchanted Work Gloves that make you proficent at any household task. Allowing a student to become a one man/woman supply chain. Rowena: An Enchanted Notebook with an unlimited number of pages. Filled with countless spells from Ravenclaw's day to the present. Salazar: An Amulet that allows one to see the history and true intentions of those around its wearer. That way his heir and any traitors could be identified quickly in time of need.

The simplest explanation I can think of for Godric charming his hat to make the sword accessible in time of need would be personal defense for himself and any of his heirs/students. By this line of thinking, the charm likely existed prior to all four founders bewitching the hat to sort future students.

Yeah i'm not buying this for the simple fact that then ravenclaw and hufflepuff would be without their wands, which they'd still need even after creating the hat. Plus just another wand seems kinda disappointing since every person at that school would already have one on hand You dismissed them but i do think the diadem and cup would be the most obvious choice for items, not least because they're the only significant items known to belong to them, but also cus they make the most sense when you really think about it Sure they're not a sword but remember only a gryffindor's first instinct would be to attack it head on, hence a sword would be the most useful. Ravenclaw's diadem had the power to grant great wisdom, and a ravenclaws first instinct when seeking help would be to seek answers, go the smart route rather than the brave. As for hufflepuff, i dont think its ever stated what power the cup had but that it did have a power, so i propose it had the power of healing those who drank from it. A giant monster attacking the school, a hufflepuff's instinct would be to save their friends as best they can, so an object that could heal could do would be perfect You say these items couldnt be correct cus voldemort found them and turned them into horcruxes, but does the hat really work by "storing" the object inside? I remember the scene in the movie when the sword simply vanished from the goblin's hand so i was under the impression that the hat could simply summon the item from wherever it may be. So by that logic, the other house items would still make sense even if voldemort found them somewhere else And while on the subject, is it stated gryffindor put the sword in the hat after creating it specifically as a measure against slytherin's plans? I always thought it was simply there for any gryffindor who needed help. If its not stated that it was to stop slytherin and they perhaps all put items in when creating the hat, then it makes sense that slytherin would likely put his locket in there. No idea what it would be for though or what it would do, maybe grant whoever wore it the ability to speak parseltongue so they could open the chamber?

I was thinking that the locket would both give the person the ability to speak parseltounge if it is an ability they do not already posses. Plus it would give them more control over snakes around them. Because even with parseltounge, Harry wouldn't have made the basilisk listen to him, only slytherin's heir could make it listen, not even another slytherin.

Personally, I believe that Godric possibly put the enchantment on as soon as he had obtained the Sword or shortly after. I mean, it makes sense if you think about how the goblins still wanted it, and who wanted to take it back. If they were successfully able to steal it, he is THE true Gryffindor and he would ALWAYS be able to pull the sword. I think he was the only one to have put any enchantment on it, it was HIS hat to begin with. And those who truly had the Gryffindor spirit would be able to pull the sword, just as he was able to.

Hypothetical question, if a parent taught there child occlumency before going to Hogwarts, would the sorting hat be able to sort them into a house? Can an adult wizard from a different wizarding school be sorted into a Hogwarts house? Or like can a student transfer to Hogwarts from a different school like from Durmstrang or Beauxbaton?
@DanteYewToob
@DanteYewToob 2 года назад
About the second part… yes. The hat just reads your deep subconscious to find out what kind of person you truly are, like how Neville believes he’s a coward, but deep down he’s a brave guy who always stood up when he needed to. If Neville went to Durmstrang and Voldemort attacked he would do the same thing because it’s who he is. Hat or not, Neville is a brave and strong kid who just doesn’t believe in himself. So if Victor Krum transferred to Hogwarts he would need to join a house, so the hat would just read him and probably put him in Slytherin.. he seems like a very ambitious guy who mostly just cares about sports and being the best, which is a Slytherin basically. (I subscribe to the fact that Slytherins aren’t all bad. It’s just that ambition leads to greed and negative feelings, lots of Slytherin students have successful slytherin parents who corrupt them. But we know good slytherins exist too!) So yeah, it doesn’t matter where you’re from.. I’d be a Hufflepuff.. because it fits my personality and the hat goes off of ME, it doesn’t decide for me.. I pick the house by the choices I’d make and the person I am.
@evanvazquez8530
@evanvazquez8530 2 года назад
@@DanteYewToob your wrong the hat doesn't read subconscious it reads values, traits and personalities. neville wasnt always brave he valued bravery due to his what happened to his parents. The hat say that value and the fact that Neville had the potential to be brave but was to scared to be so. It put him in gryffindor to with the brave students to challenge that quality from him. Pettigrew was a coward he should have been in slytherin but was placed in gryffindor because he valued people that were strong and brave but he was a coward

I was on board until the actual reveal of the wands, lol. So the other 2 houses need to prove to the Hat that they are true to their respected houses and then prove to the wands that they're worthy? that's a lot of hoops. It would make more sense to me if it was a magical non-sentinel item, like the Sword. It feels like they had a good starting point, but couldn't find anything good and then threw the Wands in as a last resort. And I would think that Godric wouldn't have left the Slytherin house defenseless just because it was Salazar's house. That's sort of like punishing the kids for their association with the parent. I would think Godric could have left a "Slytherin item" in the Hat, or at least something that could be considered Slytherin through the lens of a Gryffindor, if that makes any sense.

I'm not sure if I believe that it would be Ravenclaw's and Hufflepuff's wands in the hat. While it would work theoretically, I'm not sure I'm sold. After all, I don't recall if we know where Slytherin's or Gryffindor's wands are either. Plus, I don't feel like we know enough about the famous witches to say with any kind of certainty that they weren't warrior's in their own right with their own weapons. I feel like Ravenclaw would have left behind a particularly powerful spell. Perhaps written on a piece of parchment. It would be something universal like the disarming spell or a protections spell. If it was specifically for the basilisk, maybe it was a spell that could create a mirror of sorts so it would look itself in the eye. While not as readily available to just use as a sword, I could see Ravenclaw expecting her students to be clever enough to figure something out. For Hufflepuff, I feel like she was have some kind of magical artifact or perhaps a shield of some sort. Since shields can make powerful weapons, too. The shield would definitely be covered in some kind of highly poisonous toxin she cultivated from some kind of rare plant. Or she would have a potion that was basilisk antivenom. Also, I feel like Slytherin students would be able to pull something out of the hat. After all, we do know that the house accepts half-bloods and on occasion muggle-borns. They would still need protection from their own house since they would technically be purged as well. Though, it may not be anything of Slytherin's since he wouldn't have found those students to be worth saving. They may have gotten their own sword, or perhaps a staff, since I feel like staves could be seen as objects of the powerful and for a wizard a bit extra (because I feel like Slytherins would have the flare for the dramatic). Also, lots of depictions of Merlin (a famous Slytherin) is often seen with a staff (at least in muggle depictions). Perhaps even it could have been Merlin's staff as he would have been around not long after the founding of the school, if memory serves correctly. Or maybe they all had their own swords.

I like to think Ravenclaw had a magic mirror which could let anyone project themselves for everyone to see so they can call for help. As for Slytherin I imagine he had some kind of device that would prevent the wielder from being attacked by the basilisk like bug repellent.
@WatchThatFirstStep
@WatchThatFirstStep 2 года назад
Salazar Slytherin ONLY accepted pure-bloods in his house and wouldn't have needed protection from his beast. Those of pure-blood status were meant to survive, that was end result of his plan. The Sorting Hat placing half-bloods into his house (Merlin was half-blood) occurred after Slytherin's departure and probably death. But I am on board with everything else you wrote.
@crhamilton1012
@crhamilton1012 2 года назад
@@WatchThatFirstStep True, but after he left the school and the sorting hat did its job, who was to say there weren't any early on? If the other three founders were as smart as we believe they are, they might have figured that there were half-bloods or less that fit Slytherin's house. They wouldn't want, on the off-chance to them, anyone being hunted and killed by the basilisk. I mean, I could be wrong. But I feel like if the sorting hat, embedded with Slytherin's ways of thinking, put muggle-borns and half-bloods in Slytherin during Harry's time, he probably would have after Slytherin left the school as well. Since you mentioned Merlin being half-blood, he was not long after the founders. You probably wouldn't have had much of a pure blood issue in his time versus Harry's. So, I think it could still stand that even Slytherin house would need protection from him.

I always thought each of the four left something for their students to pull. We know Gryffindor left the sword. I believe Ravenclaw left her diadem, Hufflepuff left her cup, and Slytherin left his locket. I don’t believe they left their items for a specific “fight,” but something to help their students get out of a “sticky wicket.” The diadem to think of the best solution, the cup, filled with a courage potion, to overcome fear, and the locket to remind the student to keep their “eyes on the prize (Goal). That the three were turned into Horcruxes might “cloud” the results and therefore not work as intended, or as thorough as intended.

@eolhinforest7736

Hmmm... Slytherin was also associated with healing (as was his wand), and there seems to be an association with potions as well. So I would say that in an emergency a worthy Slytherin would pull from the hat a very powerful and generalized healing potion. A Hufflepuff might pull out a shield that cast a secondary magical shield around you and your friends, so that you could protect yourself and others from whatever threatened. A Ravenclaw might pull out a book of spells that would read from the user their assessment of the situation, and on opening present the spell most likely to be of use to them in that situation. That is how I see things anyway. I do have to wonder though, if there weren't quite a number of students, over the years, who had the traits to make them an excellent Slytherin (ambition, cunning, a bit of ruthlessness, etc.), but they were muggleborn. I know, a few of them were let in, but I have to imagine that was only ones with NO other traits to let them into another house. So that had to have somewhat thrown off the sorting system. Also, what happened when a student wasn't particularly bright, brave, ambitious, or at all loyal or hard working? Did they still get dumped in Hufflepuff by default? Or was that something like a negative hat-stall? Rather then having the traits of several houses strongly, they lacked the traits of any of the houses? It just seems like Hufflepuff should have had more students, at least by a little, than the other houses, if they accepted both the particularly loyal and hard working, and all the ones that the other houses rejected.

I for one can see a use for Helga's cup in a fight. She was obsessed with Herbology so it isn't that much of a stretch to think she might've been a master Potionier as well. The cup could've been enchanted to provide any number of healing potions that would come in handy with dealing with Basilisk venom. While it's established that the only known cure is Phoenix tears in the current age. That doesn't mean there wasn't a potion in the 10th century that has been forgotten by the 21st that could cure Basilisk venom or at the very least halt its effects long enough to find the tears of a Phoenix.

... nothing. The Relics of the Founders were all hidden in different places. Godric Gryffindor is the only one who hid his in the Sorting Hat. In fact, Harry and the gang DESTROYED the other Relics because Voldemort made them into Horcruxes. The fancy cup in the Gringotts Vault? That was the Chalice of Helga Hufflepuff. The locket? Salazar Slytherin's locket. The ring, too, for that matter. The crown from the Room of Requirement was the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw. One by one, Tom Riddle found them all and, secretly, turned them into horcruxes... then initially put them back where he found them, since he they were already in extremely hard to find and reach, cleverly protected places, and so long as nobody worked out what he'd done, the teachers would protect them better than he could. However, he moved and hid them, mostly, again once he realized his horcruxes had been identified and were being hunted by someone he knew was pretty adept at finding things and getting through magical protections. Gryffindor's Sword was the only Relic he never tainted because he could never work out where it was or how to get it... and couldn't ever get it even if he knew how, since the Sword would only come out of the Hat at the need of someone who was truly alike to Godric. The Heir to Gryffindor, if you will, somebody who embodied everything that Gryffindor was.

Salazar had a wand that was comprised of basilisk horn and snakewood. Maybe something for extra oomph - that only a pureblood wizard could call on. Rowena could have left a book of advanced charms such as the patronus, top tier shield and protective enchantments or maybe forbidden magic. Helga I view as a strategic learner. You had to work smart AND hard to overcome talent. I see her having advanced archives similar to Snape's advanced potion making book in HBP. Everything with pragmatic revisions and how to learn in additional ways. Perhaps a portkey to a hidden location?

I doubt the sword was for fighting the Basilisk specifically, more for generally defending the school in a time of need. And I think if it was done before the split (most likely) all 4 would have stored something in there, Slytherin included. Maybe even in the understanding, that the hopes of the others might fail and Slytherin students may have to defend the school from a kind of purge. All four lived in violent times, and I think their gifts would have suited their studends. So I guess for Ravenclaw it would be a book/Grimoire of sorts, containing specials knowledge, as she was an "arm the world with knowledge" type of person, for Helga it is harder to guess what kind of tools she would have given her students, Gryffindors tool he passed on was the sword and with Salazar I would guess a very powerful magical artifact that would greatly enhance the user's magical power.

The sword was not stored in the hat, rather teleported to the hat. Thus I suspect the 4 iconic items were in the enchantment list. The Sword, the cup, the diadem, the locket. When a Griffindor is in need, it's highly likely a combat situation due to their nature, thus the sword will fit the job. Hufflepuff which is the inclusion house of Hogwarts -- since they don't really value certain traits, so it's the "everyone else" house -- thus a Hufflepuff in need would be recognition. They always have what it takes, but doubt themselves. The cup act as Helga's recognition that they're great all along, and push them forward to greatness. The diadem were heavily rumored to be enchanted to enhance intelligence, true or not, it will challenge a Ravenclaw's perspective on intellect. If it does enhance intelligence, they'll feel newly aquired power and further their study. If it doesn't, they'll have newly aquired knowledge which still furthers their path. The locket of Slytherin contains the secret of the chamber. I don't think Salazar intent his heir to "purify the blood". Rather, to know their limits. To realize great ambition, one need to first gaze upon themselves and admit they have endless potential, rather than already peaked. Dealing with the chamber and Salazar's legacy will let the Slytherin taste great challenge, fear, possible loss, disaster, and when they can over come the chamber -- victory. It's the only item capable of harming the student, acting like Salazar's final exam. Due to the horcrux situation, the other items probably got twisted enough to trigger a fail safe to not show up and lead the true heir into path of darkness.

Well I don't think those could have been wands because 1) personalization 2)how would they cast the spell 3)why would they give up their wands.(next part is me fantasising what could other houses get, nothing like that is in the books) I think that since Hufflepuff was about helping others I think they should something that could help them heal people like a vial of phoenix tears and for Ravenclaw since they're smart they could get some kind of information/scouting tool that would give them a better grasp of what is happening on the battlefield, and someone from Slytherin could get some basilisk poison.

What if a half-blood or muggle born Slytherin kid who most likely aren't Parseltounges, ends up in the Chamber of Secrets; I doubt that Basilisk would spare them. What would a Slytherin need and get from the hat? If it's not Slytherin's locket which would maybe allow you to temporarily speak Parseltounge and grant you command over the Basilisk to go back to sleep for the next few centuries. Sence Salazars locket is a Horcruxe. I guess it would be some sort of tool or gadget like a whistle or a flute that Salazar created and enchanted that mimics a rooster's crow. This is deadly to a Basilisk but Salazar wouldn't want to kill his pet so I figure sence it's a artificial rooster crow it would only incapacitate it for a long time without killing it. Or Salazar enchanted the said tool to only sound enough to incapacitate the Basilisk enough for the Slytherin kid to scram out of the chamber. Anyways that's my theory. 🐍🖤Slytherin #1 House

It seems much more likely to me, being that it was his hat, that Gryffindor already had the enchantment to bring his sword to him on the hat, and the ability to draw it to the students was a byproduct of the other enchantments, intentional or otherwise.

Godrik: bravery - so a sword for attacking and striking down the monster like a hero. Rowena: intelligence - so a magical floating spell book capable of displaying any spell that would be useful to the situation, only a truly resourceful wizard/witch could. adapt and learn the spells and use them quickly and effectively. Helga: loyalty/kindness - so a shield. Where Godrik would focus on dramatic offense, Helga would focus on the more subtly heroic act of protection of the student and their allies. I don't know whether it would be a glove or bracer that projects magic shield or a full on metal shield itself but something like that. Salazar: ambition and cunning - assuming he would get to put one in I think it would be a crown (because he's an egotist) but the crown grants the ability of parseltongue allowing the 'true slytherin' the benefits of being an heir - ie summing and control of the basilisk.

I interpret Helga Hufflepuff's sphere of influence is along the lines of engineering a good system to follow because of her values of hard work and loyalty. Her spaces were often about sustenance rather than prowess. Therefore, I think if she had something come from the hat it would be an angry horde of chocolate bunnies come to deliver super-rapid-acting diabetes to the enemy as they relentlessly burrow into the mouth of the enemy.

i feel like, if well written, the diadem and cup could easily be used in battle. imagine being able to put the diadem on and be endowed with a wildly strong protective charm, mirroring Roina trying to defend the knowledge she so deeply cared for. The cup is a bit more tricky. My first thought is that you could pull the cup out and put any liquid inside of it and it could be transfigured into like a rejuvenation potion of sorts. so with the three houses other than Slytherin, if you could wield all three, you'd have an impenetrable defense, near infinite rejuvenation and a sword above all others. basically making the wearer dumbledore levels of strength or even higher.

a lot of people underestimate and may not have thought of food during battle.. there's a reason why a chef would be required in an army group. So I assume a true hufflepuff would pull either medicinal herbs, healing salves, food to restore energy in their time of need. Now ravenclaw can perhaps pull a scroll or a magical object for casting a spell without a wand, after all, the ravens are smart. Slytherin however, may not get much.. or rather the only concern for slytherin at the time was regarding muggles, so perhaps he may hid a map or locator to clue into the chamber of secrets for a non-heir who cannot speak parsletounge.

if you're going to put something in the hat specifically to fight a creature that kill you whenever it locks eyes with you, it should be something that can counter that... Echo Location glasses! Basically, it's a blindfold that projects an image in front of you based on sound. so you're blocking your actual line of sight and any and all sound waves that come in to contact with it will display what would be your line of sight. since the death gaze is a result of seeing the light waves reflected off its eyes, it would be blocked. but that same gaze would not travel through soundwaves, so when the soundwaves hit the blindfold, and convert into light, the death gaze would be gone. like if you agree, and if you disagree, feel free to give a [rational] argument as to why this technique wouldn't work.

I’ve been thinking about this question as well, and I have an idea for what the other houses could pull out of the hat. Hufflepuff: I think Hufflepuff would pull out an enchanted spray bottle that holds an unlimited supply of phoenix tears. As the Harry Potter fans know, phoenix tears have immense healing powers that can keep you alive even if you’re an inch from death, and unlike the unicorn blood, there’s no terrible price or consequence. On top of that, phoenix tears are the ONLY known cure for basilisk venom. Hufflepuffs value friendship, so it would make sense that they’d have something that can save a friend from dying or at the very least keep them alive long enough to protect their friends. Ravenclaw: I think a true Ravenclaw would pull out a book filled with the knowledge and wisdom of the Greek gods. This book would provide the reader with the knowledge they need to pull them out of a sticky situation. Now don’t get the wrong idea. Although the book provides knowledge, it does NOT provide weapons or tools. Here’s an example: the book may provide info on a vampire’s weakness, but it will NOT provide any tools to help capitalize on it. Ravenclaws desire knowledge, so it would make since that they’d have something that can teach them something new. Slytherin: this one’s a little tricky, but I think a true Slytherin would pull out a pair of mystical knight gauntlets. These particular gauntlets are made entirely out of dragon scales that Merlin collected during his time. These gauntlets would extend into a full suit of armor around the wearer providing a massive boost in power which can match and even surpass that of a full grown dragon. It even has retractable wings that allow the wizard/witch to fly, though not quite as fast as the fastest dragons around. Also because the armor is made out of dragon scales, it also gives the wearer a strong resistance to magic and fire, BUT just like a dragon it’s not immune and can still be overwhelmed from too many attacks. Slytherins have a lust for power, so of course they’d have something like this

Maybe all of them knows that the items can be destroyed so maybe (like Helga's cup and Rowena's diadem) so they need a solution for that So...Hufflepuffs would get Helga's broken cup's pieces. After boiling the cup's pieces to certain degrees,(because Hufflepuffs is related to cooking sometimes) the cup pieces would turn into a tiny shield that can change it size and grow any kind of plants for food and potion supplies And Ravenclaws would get the broken pieces of Rowena's broken diadem that can float and attach itself into an empty book(they could be associated with books sometimes) then fill the book with every kind of spell... The spells can be casted without a wand, only by holding that book Idk about Godric's sword(because it is not broken... ...yet...)

I have a question if there are new vs used wand differences. Are all wands new? What about a famous wand not buried with it's owner but one that might be taken be another witch or wizard? As for the sorting hat, I think you are correct that the items they had would not be the cup or diadem for those several reasons. However, while wands are possible, I think there are other devices for the students. The hat was Griffindors. The room of requirement is Ravenclaw's. Hufflepuff's Aid is not fully explored but there's quite possibly a shield spell available that would be a non-corporeal patronus to any student who needed aid. Furthermore, before the cup was a horcrux, it would provide food and care to any wizard abandoned or wrongly persecuted by any of the other houses.

I think that the hat's purposes were #1 to sort the students and # 2 to act as a sword retrieval device. For the hat to only retrieve griffindor's sword is enough. I would say that griffindor left the sword as inheritance for all "true" griffindors and not just his children, if he had any. In doing so he would be making the statement that his heirs would be those that inherit his principles and not just his blood. And that statement would be in direct opposition to slytherin putting so much importance on blood purity to inherit magic: magic in the blood; magical artifacts; magical knowledge... I think that this is the reason for the sorting hat to be a retrieval device, to maintain this inheritance for any and all true griffindor's, so long as they had access to the hat. Over the years there could be plenty of wizards or goblins trying to steal the sword. The hat and sword would both be guarded at hogwarts, but i think this function is mainly to guard against the goblins. I don't think that goblins would take the hat to ensure no one could retrieve the sword with it is because of their sense of ownership. Goblins don't like stealing and they believe the craftsman is the true owner. Because the hat was crafted by griffindor they wouldn't steal it. The reason the other founder's magical objects wouldn't come out of the hat is simple, they aren't griffindor's and they chose other methods to bequeath those objects.

But is it necessary that the person who draws out the sword have to be in Gryffindor's house? My theory is that Dumbledore's expression "true Gryffindor" has more to do with characteristics than with which dormitory someone has been sleeping in. If the sword is enchanted to present itself to a brave hero in dire need, couldn't it be possible that also a brave hero like Newt Scamander, Cedric Diggory, or Nymphadora Tonks could have gotten the sword too, if they really needed it in their fight for the good of all?

Harry would become a horcrux, and would probably survive the blow, but that would change the entire series. For this to happen, Lily and James mustn’t have loved Harry and therefore never have been sent to the Dursleys therefore never have asked Molly for help and never have met Ron. He also wouldn’t have had a connection with Voldemort and wouldn’t have destroyed him in godrics hallow.
