A quick look over and review of the latest Apple Watch Ultra and the lates Garmin Epix Gen 2 PRO-sapphire. Which is a proper outdoor watch? The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is where it will be put through its paces-but which one?
I got my Garmin and the Garmin connect is hard to get ....I guess time will fix it, but so far apples just the easiest to navigate and it does Data to you better than how Garmin gives you the Data with Athlytic app, and work outdoors, and the apple watch ultra 1 just feels like a better watch... you don't have to fidget with looking for stuff which is highly annoying on Garmin but this may just be me needing time to get use to the Garmin, you will see what I mean after spending the grand for the titanium watch. I would be pissed if I had bought a more expensive watch with the way it gives me data.... it would be sent back. I wear both my watches and to my surprise the heart rate and most everything is almost spot on. even all sleep stages are with in 5 to 20 minutes different so far. I can't tell you one is better than the other this is my opinion and wear both apple and a Garmin watch daily. The Garmin 965 is a outstanding watch but to me it feels like a cheap child's toy, plastic, and flimsy bands and I don't get that with any of the Apple watches,(I have not tried a more expensive Garmin watch yet made of Titanium, and Sapphire so those may feel better but for 600 bucks that's still enough to have had a Titanium case and sapphire lens on the 965!!!!!!) plus I have already scratched the screen in the first week. I probably should have bought the more expensive Epix or Fenix pro, but the way I see the data I DO NOT LIKE and would have already returned it.(it still may require time to learn it.) These are my opinions, and your use may yield a different outcome than mine. I hope this helps anyone on the fence. O and one other thing I do like apples maps and navigation better it's more streamline and it does not lag and take time to populate other areas of the map when loading new tiles, no lag at all on apple watch ultra 1 the Garmin lags badly I am not sure if it's only the 965 or all of them.
It’s a fair point , and yes it is brilliant- but I do like asking my watch stuff- I know it’s silly , but - set a timer, reply to messages etc…. This I don’t know which to wear - I’m on a trek now with the garmin- but home and work- apple ! 🤷🏻♂️ thanks for your input
As an athlete & owner of a tactix 7 pro (first) and the AWU 2, I can honestly say I love both but prefer the ecosystem of the AWU. It’s had a greater impact on something I didn’t see before. The amount of time spent on my phone. Battery life isn’t a big deal. At some point the garmin also needs to be charged. AWU just happens to be more frequently lol.
I have the AWU 1 and the Fenix 5. I thought I would stick to the AWU, but keep going back to the years old Fenix. I love the round design, even though the AWU has many more features. When I am out in the back country, I can rely on the battery. Also don't have to pivot towards one phone, as I use both Android and iPhone. I also don't give a crap for answering texts or playing music through my watch either.
I have the Apple Watch Ultra 2 . Yes, it is a great smart watch but it is no comparison to a Garmin when it comes to fitness tracking. For that reason I went back to my Garmin Venue . If you are serious about fitness training then no question about it, you should go with a Garmin.
Battery is better on epic by a mile, metrics are superior. Ultra 2 allows smart interaction, Siri, timers , reply to messages, dictate. It allows verbal commands and calculations. Great for a day, not as good if on a week long expedition
I have the Garmin Fenix 6X and Watch Ultra 2. The Garmin is my go to hiking and adventure watch and my Ultra is my go without a phone watch. The Ultra 2 is the best smart watch Apple has ever made but it’s not a proper sports watch. If I could only have one watch I’d chose one of my GPS/Radio, solar charging G-Shocks.
Yeah I wish Apple and garmin would Merge - that would be perfect !! Used to live and swear by g-shocks- not tried their latest offerings. Are they any good??
Yeah - I kinda agree. I sold my epix, and do love the Apple Watch- I do…. But just ordered a new epix - so yeah . Garmin . I wish the two would merge !!!
I really wish i could afford both. the Apple Watch 9 is so nice to have for day to day but the garmin is head and shoulders better for the outdoor life.
Yep agree - I spend most of my life - working - outdoors - but only 8-5 - occasionally I’m out multi day - therefore I sold the garmin…. For now !!! For now - until im feeling ££££
Initially I sold the garmin, 5 months later I bought another epix and sold the Apple Watch. 🤷🏻♂️ they say the Apple Watch x(10) is a massive redesign, so we will see!!! :-)
I’m a cheapskate so have a 6 pro and an AW series 7 they’ve both got their place/neither are perfect. In an ideal world Garmin would link up with Apple and integrate the smart capabilities into an Epix and steal the haptics from the Apple Watch. As it is I’m currently wearing the AW for everything except workouts where I’ll swap to the Garmin.
I have the Garmin Fenix 5 Pro Sapphire and an AW Series 7. If I had to go with just one, I’d take my old Fenix 5 over the AW7. I’ll probably dump both and get the EPIX Pro 2 w the flashlight. Amoled, flashlight, looks, and 6 days battery just destroys the Ultra IMO.
@@kernowoutdoors Epic pro has a much brighter screen and the battery life is half of fenix 7x pro's. It's not 29 days, more like 12 and based on usage, it may even be shorter! I just hate to charge my watch!!! I got my Fenix 7x pro sapphire yesterday, and I love it! The solar charging is amazing!!! I left the watch under direct sunlight maybe for half an our, it put 8 hours worth of charge!!! I don't think one needs to charge this watch ever during the sunny days! I can care less about the brighter screen, it's not like I am going to watch TV on it.
I have Epic Pro and Apple Watch ultra 2. Garmin recovery and body battery is a game changer for me. Apple Watch can do this through some apps but not in the same way. Battery life is rubbish in comparison on Apple Watch. I am an apple fan boy but there is no comparison between the two in terms of an activity tracker. AW tracks activities but tells you nothing after it. Garmin does the same but gives you recovery matrix on the watch with no need to use apps. Oh and flashlight is game charger.

apple hands down, I wear both though apple watch ultra 1 and Garmin 965 batteries in the back country don't make a sh$t to me I carry battery chargers with me so battery has never been an issue! I'm not lazy like the lot of you claim to be runners but complain about charging a watch LOL apple watch is the most popular watch ever so bite on that .......my Garmin will be for sale before long.
It is tough. Tbh, I’ve been going backward and forward between going back to Apple after a 3 year stint with Android. I do love the Recovery analysis on Garmin but would suffice with Athlytic. Every 2nd day charge for an hour is nothing with a 3n1 MagSafe charger by my bed. Too many everyday apps on apple I’d miss I feel. If your’e into more hardcore training I can see Garmin being a lot more enticing
@@HabitualFixation I do like the AW a lot for it’s smartwatch features…. But for me I’m thinking going to a Garmin Watch (of course loosing many Smart features), but winning a all in one base for my fitness stats. Apple and it’s 3rd party apps isn’t that good at all. Already tried Training Today, Athlytic and so on… Do have WorkOutDoors, HealthFit. But I don’t like that I need x apps to get something Garmin has in one single platform. Quite hard to decide.
Garmin as i had the Apple watch 7 and purchased the epix 2 sapphire and can’t see me going back to the AW not unless they get better battery and same metrics on fitness and health as Garmin without 3rd party apps.
