The Scotland England border was settled over centuries of clashes in the history of Scotland. Some are some more surprising than others. Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey explains two unusual quirks of the Scottish English border.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Great bit of banter to present the history. I was recently astonished to find that Scotland was once geologically separate from England - roughly along the border lines, this is probably why those rivers and valleys flow the way they do. I wonder if you noticed this physical demarcation on your travels?

Scotsman living in England here. I couldn't agree more with your comments. Britain is a very beautiful place, with such contrasting landscapes and architectural beauty. Snowdonia, The Lakes, The Cairngorms, Western Isles, Cornwall, The Fens and much, much more. Throw in the castles, stately homes, cathedrals and all in between - we're damn lucky in that respect. I used to live in Newcastle and work in Edinburgh during the week and would drive up, via Coldstream, rather than the A1, as it's such a pretty journey, full of history. A lot slower than the A1, but well worth setting off earlier. Fond memories.

Thinking of military invasions, I'd be fascinated to learn more about the several times the Scots reached London and turned back because they didn't believe they could take it. Especially, that time the Welsh did exactly the same thing at the same time, and the two combined would have done it if they coordinated on any level. This was mentioned in passing on a documentary I saw years ago, as a "this embarrassing thing happened" from an English historian. I've never managed to find out much more about it.

Bruce, I will be watching this one a number of times. While living in Carham my brother and I were accused of throwing apple cores over the cliff behind the school in Wark. We came home from school in Berwick on Tweed one day to find the local Bobby in the house with Mum and Dad having tea. We denied having done the dastardly deed but when he asked if we had stolen apples anywhere we did admit to acquiring a few from a cottage right on the main road in Wark...big juicy ones frae wee short trees(Without permission, we thought we were helping crop control). Silly blighters, when the man down below the cliff asked us who were were we told him instead of getting on our bikes and heading home. Great to know now at the ripe old age of 71 that the River Tweed only marked about 17 mile of the border and no the whole 97 mile. Thanks for sharing and let your wife know she does really well at capturing your good side. Cheers...Freddie

I remember before the pub licencing hours were extended to their present times, Scottish pubs called time at 10 pm and English pubs called their time at 10:30pm, Scots who fancied half an hour of extra drinking time would cross the border into England and get their extra half hour. In Scotland the pubs didn't open at all on Sundays, the only way you could buy a drink on a Sunday in Scotland was to sign in as a guest in a hotel bar, you weren't allowed to go to the bar to order your drinks but waiters would come to your table to take your order and deliver the drinks to you. It was much easier for border Scots to walk into England and they could drink at the bar from Noon until 3pm and then from 7pm until 10:30pm.

Bruce when you find the time can you do a video on Gretna Green? It seems like every bodice ripper (historical romance) that I read years ago had someone trying to run off to get married there. I've been trying to read about it but my eyesight is not too good so it's slow going. I'm sure you have a long list so if you ever get to it thank you!

I still consider Berwick sorta, kinda, half, a weeeeee bit Scottish. I’m sure most of them consider themselves confused as well.
@barryalexander2909
@barryalexander2909 3 года назад
Isn't Berwick an independent dominion? I recall that Berwick was written into the formal declaration of war with Russia (Crimean War), but was omitted from the peace treaty, meaning that the town was at war with Russia for more than a century.
@pedanticradiator1491
@pedanticradiator1491 3 года назад
@@barryalexander2909 that's a myth. The formal declaration did not mention Berwick-upon-Tweed and since the 18th century act of Parliament called The Laws of Wales and Berwick Act any official mention of England has included Berwick

Ah, Scotland's southern border - a wretched hive of scum and villainy, and the main reason why we still have to put up with a handful of Tory MPs. But, seriously though, I'm glad that Scots and English found a way to settle disputes with blood being shed.

Interesting! I love the bit about the football pitch on the English side belonging to Scotland permanently now. Bruce, you may be interested to know that we have a couple of similar oddities on the Canada/US border. Check out the Northwest Angle, where Manitoba, Ontario, and the US border come together. There's a swath of land that has no physical connection to the US, but the border jumps up to run around it and make it part of the US. Similarly, check out Point Roberts, the tip of a peninsula south of Vancouver, BC. The straight-line border bisects the peninsular, forcing those who live at the tip to send their kids by bus to school in Blaine, WA, which requires crossing the border 4X a day, twice going and twice coming.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours seriously, you must hear/read this type of comment all the time. If not then the others are just lazy, incompetent, selfish, rude or have never learned to write and spell. Just kidding; I don’t wish to insult others; especially those others who listen to you. I do not make comments on everyone of your videos because I do not desire that i tempt you in the ways of growing your head into ginormous proportions. That, and I am off times selfish, rude, lazy, incompetent & I need to have someone around who will type what I desire to communicate. Great. Now I feel rotten. Hi Bruce I've just told my best Scottish friend I need addiction therapy. I'm also English like many of your followers. I grew up just south of the border in a formerly military town, now a prison. We took in lodgers from the camp who at least were married and NCO status. I virtually grew up with dual nationality. They became family friends and we went up on several visits to visit them. I was an army cadet and they pushed me through army customs so I shot up through the ranks. I now live in Canada and our local watering hole for 40 years was known as The Tartan Tavern (TT)which unfortunately was forced to surrender to multiple enforced lock downs because of Covid. Thanks to the way I grew up and the many friends and staff at the TT I don't need the subtitles. Fluent in Connelly, Broons and Still Game. Great to get so much history.
