Engine bearings may not sound like the most fun topic to some… but trust us… you’ll want to know this information BEFORE you’re tearing that fresh race motor back down for another rebuild…
In this PRI Education seminar, Dan Begle, Performance Sales Engineer at MAHLE, provides a deep-dive into the design and fundamentals of performance engine bearings.
In it, Dan defines overlays, substrates, oil flow, bearing crush, and geometry. Dan explores the effect of bearing selection on overall engine performance and reliability, and answers questions like, “How do race-specific components-RPM limiters, superchargers, nitrous oxide, turbos, etc.-affect bearing choices?" Of course, Dan also covers best practices related to the use and maintenance of these products.

I didn’t think that I’d find this interesting, but ended up realising the science behind bearings fascinating. Good job on breaking the subject down to where someone with more than just a RU-vid engineering degree, lol. I could listen to more. Edit: Just came across another 2hr video from this years talk, cool.

I was in this session and I learned something I couldn't with all the research I did on engine bearings. The fact that H-series Clevite bearings are cast with molten material instead of sintered with powdered substrate. I used P-bearings for a number of years because I was leary of the H-series design, not anymore after this session. I am currently running H's in my SBC 383 pushing 700HP and it has so far been great. I will know for sure when I tear down the motor this winter and inspect the results of this years season of racing my UMP Modified. Thanks Dan for the great info and presentation, keep up the good work!
