The miniature turbojet engine on the Hyunmoo-3 is copied from a Russian design that the South Koreans got from Project Brown Bear, a project where Russia gave South Korea a lot of Soviet military technology as a way to pay off debts.

MK41 VLS is not designed for use on submarines.

@@matthewtulberg2252 Virgina class has a Vls (probably mk41) which was considered for Isaac Peral S80+ submarines initially.... Southkorea has k-vls which is something they are not willing to share for export.

There was a VERY recent development of a quantum IMU (inertial measurement unit) which is just an accelerometer so precise it can actually give you your accurate position if you know the initial position so presumably no drift. It was developed specifically for naval use when there is no access to GPS signals and to me that screams submarine. It seemed pretty huge though so I don't know about retrofitting existing subs with it.

The regular subs of today, which patrol submerged for months, without seeing sky OR the bottom relief. How did they know where they are when submerged? How did they know where they were heading?

@@SerbanOprescu I get it but I don't know much about that so all I could contribute is the near future. I believe the current ones use gravity measurements as part of their navigational toolkit but that's about all I can tell you.

No those were supersonic not hypersonic. They look similar because the technology was originally from Russia

It's gonna be smaller than Brahmos and longer range but not as much as Brahmos-M upgrade distance range.

The Brahmos was put on there for the benefit of the Indians, who are also looking for an API sub with VLS. Export market, which the Koreans are keen on.

@@miraphycs7377 super long distance missiles are a bit tricky since they may not hit their intended target and hit an oil tanker or a commercial cargo ship instead. Shipborne radar on missiles are not particularly choosey.

There are two Russian subs called Akula The Pr.941 is called Akula (meaning shark) by the Russians. NATO reporting name is TYPHOON. This is the one you have heard about. I tend to use the military/navy norm of using capital letters for NATO code names and lower case for regular names. But it is hard to do always, especially when trying to write for a wider audience

My guess is SK need the fast delivery munitions for its submarines lurking outside the NK coast to neutralize NK nuke SLBM launchers before the launch. Cruise missiles would be too slow for it. I doubt NK has capability to hunt subs outside its litoral water.

@@F_Tim1961 The Russian original fielded missile tubes on subs required repair before reloading. Pretty sure it took the US some time to get the tube engineering right so the pressure of rocket nozzle blast wouldn't mess things up.

Have to be able to retract the forward planes into the hull for docking operations. Added additional complexity and weight.

I guess would be no. If anything they'll use as many of the slots for SLBMs as possible so maybe no cruise missiles at all.

In the drawing, it is described as if a supersonic cruise missile is operated in the VLS of Dosan An Changho. By any chance, did you take into account the Indian project? And you seem to think positively about AIP submarine. However, at the condition of the highest speed under water, the maximum cruising time is still significantly lower than that of nuclear-powered submarine. Nevertheless, can AIP submarines be viewed as a game changer?

Sorry, are you referring to the Brahmos missile which is illustrated? There are three missiles in my illustration, talk: Hyunmoo-4-4 - SLBM, I would think the main weapon going forward Hyunmoo-3C - SLCM, like Tomahawk. Low-supersonic - I do have an error/oversight in not mentioning the jet phase but cannot edit the video Brahmos - mentioned in context of P75I competition Re AIP, to clarify, I think that it is a game-changer to combine modern AIP with a VLS, and more so because of the small SLBMs. AIP has both pros and cons over nuclear. Their navy is basically the anti submarine support fleet for the seventh fleet.

Their constitutional law avoid those attempt and Abe's administration wanted change the law but failed.

Japan is in a vulnerable position, being threatened by North Korea and China, and possible Russia with nuclear attack. They will not say it, but they cannot rely on the US for nuclear deterrence going forward. That is especially true with the Biden administration in charge- or any future one like it. Yes, Afghanistan points this out more clearly. Japan will need to eventually create their own independent deterrence. Right now, they are trying to keep the US as a close ally no matter the US administration, out of necessity- while trying to pull the US toward their thinking on the threats. If China does what it threatens in the press, invade Taiwan and simultaneously does a limited nuclear strike on Japan, what happens. Biden does diplomacy to prevent escalation to the US is most likely- capitulation, treaties and agreements ignored. We already see that they are good at ignoring US laws. Taiwan and Japan will be abandoned. The only defense Japan really has now is their Aegis (BMD) destroyers, and possibly drawing in the US, from the fallout on US bases in Japan. Regardless of laws, from a military perspective they need their own deterrence. China is probably calculating this scenario as well, making Japan’s stance on nuclear weapons in-affect destabilizing. The VLS on their Subs would be the best step forward for a survivable counter strike ability. Even having a conventional strike ability with SLBMs or cruise missiles on their subs sets the stage and provides some deterrence. The new PM of Japan, Kishida, is already pushing for strike weapons. They could easily modify their anti-ship missiles as land strike missiles (the ASM-3A, or the in-development missiles: Type 12/Type 17 increased range missiles, and the hypersonic ones they are working on as well). The latest version of the US SM-6 missile will also have a surface strike ability, and most likely added to their destroyers. Really, what you consider to be an offense weapon can be argued to be a deterrent and thus defensive, the extreme example is the MAD doctrine we have all been living under.

JMSDF (Japanese) claims 100 minute recharge time at snorkel depth every 10 days, which equates to having to use diesel engine less than 1% of time, without even taking into account AIP usage. They also claim ability to cruise at 20 knots underwater for sustained period, using only lithium ion battery. Also, detailed discussion of Stirling (heat) engine vs. fuel cell AIP would have being informative.

@@brodieboy3 I believe I read it in an analysis by JMSDF and/or defense ministry study when they decided to go 100% lithium-ion battery instead of AIP+lithium-ion battery after they did feasiblity studies. This was several years ago. Quick search yielded an article in The National Interest titled "To Counter China, The Japanese Navy Is Investing In Submarines." Then in the article, you'll see the following sentence: "Japan has already studied optimizing the snorkel for the diesel engines on the Soryu class. Though LIBs are faster charging, given the SS-29’s huge planned battery capacity, the improved snorkel may be necessary to avoid taking longer than the claimed 100-minute charging time for the LIB-equipped Soryu." "The SS-29 class will be built around the extraordinary battery capacity offered by lithium ion batteries (LIB). At the blog Submarine Matters, analyst Peter Coates speculates the new design might boast up to ten days cruising submerged." It's possible that 10 days might not be correct for converted Soryu. There are some calculations showing 6-7 days instead.

Nope. They license built 209 and 214 then moved onto bigger and better. Only sub with AIP and lithium ion batteries are made in Japan and Korea. One of main reason why Canada is considering subs from these 2 countries, German subs too small and underwater time not long enough.

@@leedavid408 the U212CD also uses lithium iron batteries. And btw. The U216 that was offered to Australia was even bigger (90m and 4000t). That Germany uses the 212is small is because it has to operate in the Baltic Sea, which is basically a lake. Size is not the problem. It‘s easy to build a big sub.

212cd to be delivered in 2029 & 216 a concept design Australia rejected. In other words non existent German subs with state of art AIP and lithium ion batteries which korea and Japan are operating/marketing presently.

@@leedavid408 it says in the Wikipedia article about the KSS-III (with reference) that it is based on the U214. The U212/214 was the first using PEM fuel cells. I give you that Japan was first to introduce lithium-ion batteries on subs in 2023. However, the U212A being retrofitted as they have been testing it for many years. Hardly news then. Still your case about size is irrelevant as there is no technology behind making subs bigger. An whether they are 80m or 90m is not a leap in innovation. The U212/214/218 have all been sold extensively. So that Canada is considering Korean and Japanese subs is normal. And I am sure they are good. But for the same reason India is currently considering the TKMS subs.

To be honest switching from fuel cell to lithium ion batteries will be a challenge for Germany 2020 top lithium ion battery manufacturers market share 1. LG Energy Solution - 28% (S.Korea) 2. CATL - 25% (China) 3. Panasonic - 17% (Japan) 4. BYD - 9% (China) 5. Samsung SDI - 7% (S.Korea) 6. SK Innovation - 5% (S.Korea)

The VLS in the A-26 is only an offering, no customers currently and no boats built. The first KSS-III was laid down in 2016 (and would have been designed years before). The A-26 models with VLS were first shared in 2017(?)

The late LA class subs have VLS as well for tomahawks. . But not for SLBM.

Agreed but the French seem to differ there variant utilise LOX & reformulated Diesel for hydrogen for their fuel cells.

Type 212A uses LOX in insulated tanks above the pressure hull (underneath the GRP fairing). The LOX evaporator runs on waste heat provided by the fuel cell reaction.

Lets use hypergloic reaction, as in high test hydrogen peroxide & doped Kerosene/Diesel to drive a pair of 10 Mwatt class turbines. Compact, refuel at sea possible, reliable, simple, robust & high power to weight ratio of machinery, fast recharge for solid state li ion batteries. Power levels approaching not quite SSN flank speed but sufficent for long range (1000+ nautical miles) relatively fast 20+ kts submerged strategic deployments or very fast recharge 30 to 40 minutes or less.

​@@kevinyaucheekin1319 That's efficient, but then you get SSN noise levels without SSN capabilities. For SSK, especially littoral types, fuel cells are absolutely silent; tie to Lithium Polymer batteries for sprint speed and you have a sonic black hole that can get up and move if need be...

correction, based on Islander design but not entirely similar, just that design is. Rocket system is very similar but it's system and electronics are very different.

The US had its soldiers in the country during the CIA sanctioned military dictatorship. Yeah - Saab offers lots of things in their PR brohures .. but they've not even built a single new sub since taking over Kochums in 2014. The A26 just got delayed for the 3rd time - this time by an additional 3 years with the 1st boat (which of course won't have a vls module) is now scheduled for 2027 .. after originally being promised in 2019, then 2022, then 2024 and now 2027 .. will it ever be delivered?

It's like same missile but Rissian version is called Yakhont and Indian version is called Brahmos.

That's the snorkel system. The AIP is fuel cell. A reaction of LOX and LH thru a membrane to produce water and power. The process can be reversed by using the diesels to produce power to break up water.

@NorthForkFisherman I said "w/o (without) surfacing or snorkeling". But yes, I'm aware but thankyou anyways good sir. Basically a means for power, propulsion, & crew needs(air, water, electricity) w.o using diesel engine(or supplementing)

@@jdogdarkness And a diesel also makes exhaust. A lot of it. Which is why you need the snorkel. These are two separate systems. The LOX and LH are strictly for AIP and provide one form of power to the electric motor. The diesel and batteries are the traditional way.

The ECA group and Babcocks have certainly provided assistance as the story on this sub mentions. RoK can take great pride in what has been designed and built. Building 27 of these subs in such a short space of time shows a fantastic ship building ability for such a small nation.
