I'd add: be aware that linguistics is a huge field whose spectrum reaches all the way from something related to anthropology to something related to computer science. If you happen to be among people who are focused on (say) corpus linguistics, and that's not your thing, remember that there are lots of other kinds of linguistics out there. Also, learn about the significant difference between formal & descriptive linguistics, and think about which one appeals to you.

@@rigure My suggestion would be, try it all! If you're already at a university, find out who the great teachers are there and take everything they offer. Wait as long as you can before deciding on a focus. Have fun!

I love how languages work. Somethings is one language makes sense than the other. I would love to spend my life learning languages and maintain them as I dissect them bit by bit.

Ohh 'maintain them'!!! I live in Switzerland, where we have 4 languages. However one of them is barely used and I think it's not used outside of the country: Romantsch (atleast that's how we call it). Even the native speakers speak another language, mostly German, because it's barely useful and I find it such a sad thought that in a few centuries linguists may struggle to relearn the language because it's gotten so lost... At the very least I want to learn it and maybe teach it to anyone who cares in the future...? I don't know, I desperately don't want it to get lost!!! I speak neither French nor Italian, even though they'd be very useful, I care little for them. But I don't want Romantsch to be worthless... no language is worthless! I hope that somehow, by any means, I can get some people interested in it, it's not too late yet, it's still alive

1:50 made me so happy, because I love linguistics but I'm so afraid to study it because I don't know if it will be any useful in my search for a profession... and of course everyone is pulling me down, saying I shouldn't waste years of studying, it's too unsure if I'll find a job... but a few years ago I had no passion, I was bored in school and started making an alphabet for fun, figured I might aswell make words... figured then I could also make the entire language from scratch... could make a fictional world for it... found out it's called a conlang, got into worldbuilding, which is separate from linguistics but tied to my conlang... I have two passions now: Linguistics and fantasy/worldbuilding. If I ignore them because they seem to be useless, then what do I live for? Just to survive?

Hers is a horrible take, if money isn't a problem, she is right. But if you don't have the luxury to study something that won't lead to a career, you would be wasting your time and money studying linguistics.
@rigure
@rigure 8 месяцев назад
@@_H1R0_ That's not a horrible take, that's perfectly reasonable. But I think it should stay a plan... I mean, I've been switching jobs every half year, so I don't really believe in careers... I have the luxury of having money saved up, although I still need to figure out how to balance it so I don't end up broke after school. Even if I didn't, then I'd save up, because I think true love is worth it... there are of course situations where it's impossible... _certain_ governments should not let such situations exist.

One can segway into teaching and speech and language therapy to improve employment opportunities after the degree until they land their dream job. I won't lie underearning is rough and being without money is even worse. At least with a good income you can comfortably meet your needs, enrich your life in other ways. It can also give you a better foundation and stability to move towards the career you want or business. All the best!
@rigure
@rigure 4 месяца назад
So, anyways, change of plans atm. I might study unofficially, since I don't need a certificate. I'll probably end up switching with mom because I struggle to keep a job and she wants to work away from home, so I'll take the job of household upkeep and pet care and just learn on the side via online resources. That works too!

Good for you! Honestly I wish I had the motivation to look for something. If you are interested in entering at the community college or university level, always ask for guidance what pre-requisites will prepare you for your journey. I didn't graduate middle school which really took passion from me to study harder for something, don't give up, right now that you are in high school explore, and don't let anything stop you. I'm 31 and still dreaming. It is never to late to dream, just learn how to manage time. I'd recommend to learn about how to manage finances so you won't struggle with not knowing how to balance life, finance and so on. Always but things you need, and not what you need until you know you have more than enough to spend on wants.

I’ve been studying how English works and it’s opened such a window for me into understanding how other languages work. Breaking down words with suffixes/prefixes and how sentences are formed is helping me learn another language (which is German)-I’ve always been fascinated with it, and it will certainly help me with creating stories and writing things. There is definitely SO much more I can learn from language study even throughout English-not even getting started on the Romance languages, or Altaic ones.

I believe linguistics is literally the meaning of life. All gods were created because language wasn’t sophisticated enough to describe the human condition. Language still isn’t enough to describe the human condition. Some people think there is a finite amount of ways for language to manifest due to physical constraints. It might be, but there is no doubt an incalculable number that only computers 10,000 years in the future can calculate. Language is how we think and language is infinite. So life is amazing because there is always something to learn.

I don’t believe in god but I believe that if I pursue linguistics there might be a chance of happiness in the face of the statistical anomaly of humans.
