tomscott.com - @tomscott - I give Thinking Digital 2013's health and safety crew a massive headache, while talking about sentimental value, physical objects and digital data.
Live direction and filming by Nathan Rae Productions - nathanrae.co.uk
Outside broadcast crew: Chris Fisher on camera and James Johnson on Sound.
With many thanks to Herb, Elspeth, Jackie, and all the Thinking Digital crew.

I don't think I could have done what Tom did. For me, it's not a hoodie, but my library. Yes, it does mean I have to pack dozens of boxes when moving AND have the shelf spare to store it. But those books got me through the hardest and darkest parts of my life. Getting an ebook and buying digital copies of the books wouldn't be the same. There's something in the feel, the smell, and the experience of reading one of those books that I cannot get anywhere else. So half my office is full of book shelves. Today, I add the odd comic or novel, but most of my "reading" is through audiobooks and podcasts due to time constraints. Reading one of those books is a real treat, and not one I can see myself giving up willingly.
@martynspeck
@martynspeck 4 года назад
ebooks are not the same, especially in the cloud economy where they're stored at Amazon or something. Essentially, we're just renting them and the content could be changed unbeknownst to us. Better to have a physical library and raise children who appreciate the books and add to them or break them up and pass the books on to others who appreciate having books an participating in the Great Conversation.

Every single person who ever got succesfull in life can agree that you should do a certain job because it's fun, not because it pays well. If I got the chance to be an intepreter for Japanese for the rest of my life for minimum wage, I'd do it. Even if, at the same time, I got offered a job that pays 30k a month to do data entry for the rest of my life. Keep in mind that most of the rest of your life will be spent working, not having free time. 8 hours a day will be work, with roughly 1 hour of commuting, 8 hours (should) will be sleep and those other 8 hours will be eating, free time and life things (taxes, shopping, etc.). If you can spend those 8 hours of work having fun, do it. Don't work to earn a shitload of money.

I've recently become detached from "stuff", and while I haven't actually burned anything down to prove my point, I get the sentiment. Seeing you struggle with setting fire to that hoodie (literally and figuratively) was confronting. I used to struggle like that with every single thing I owned, when it was time to get rid of it. It's a lot easier for me now, because indeed you can take photos of it, film its story, whatever. Digitising the world, one hoodie at a time.
@Chirimorin
@Chirimorin 8 лет назад
therealnightwriter You are missing the point. The point is that the hoodie itself had no value. As Tom said: it's a worn out hoodie, no longer fit to wear. The memories attached to it are the value. But since he has a "back up" in video form, he still has those memories and something to remind him of them. Thus the physical hoodie has no further purpose.

Brilliant. I started watching a few weeks ago and this video is inspirational. I struggle with letting go of anything. I have the memories, but always fear I would forget, thus I hold onto an object indefinitely. My garage is shelves and shelves of my life and my kid's life. I got to find a way like you Tom to let go and archive my memories so they are always there for me later.

I felt really sad watching this. It seemed like a justification of a beautiful theory that you couldn't truly believe in. I understand your point and it's a very interesting idea, but I can't quite agree with it. I have to know, did you feel a sense of loss? Or was that balanced by the sense of accomplishing something unusual?

My mother has been teaching me this since I was very small. Her philosophy was always, take a picture and throw it away. All throughout high school I collaged bits of my life onto my bedroom door: movie tickets, pictures, scraps of fabric from things I made, notes written in a coded alphabet, ect. When it finally came time to move out of my parents house and out of my college dorm and into my own proper apartment, I decided to take a video of the door explaining some of the things on it, and then I took it all down and threw 95% of it away. So I guess that video is now my digital door.

no, i refuse. you can not digitalize a hoodie and you never will be able to. this is a line we have to draw. the digital world has it's benefits but it can not substitute the real world. memories, of course. but not real things. if you say otherwise, think about digitalizing people. this might sound stupid, but the definition is important.
@Anaeijon
@Anaeijon 8 лет назад
+klick2destruct Well... I think the Hoodie already was only a memory. A thing to look at and remember. It was worn out and became unusable by his point of view. Instead of storing this memory inside a closet, where it takes dust and wastes space, he digitalised this memorys, the feelings and thoughts attached to it. He copied everything connected to the physical body and attached it to digital piece. The important thing wasn't the hoodie. It is the memory.
@MelBrooksKA
@MelBrooksKA 8 лет назад
+klick2destruct Well, your memories are already stored digitally in your brain, so what's the problem if someone wants to transfer it symbolically to another digital format instead of carrying around a cumbersome analog format. Plus it's his memories, let him do what he wants and tell people his reasoning. If you want to keep your memories in analog format, that's fine, but Tom didn't try to force his beliefs onto you, why should you force your's?

You are stronger than I could ever be. The _only_ reason I got rid of the MCR jacket i'd had since I was 15ish, when I was 26, was that nothing I did could make it fit in my bags back from Germany. Absolutely nothing. It had been patched several times, there was nothing left to sew the patch to. It was in just the same sorry state as your nordics hoodie. I had to throw it away. And it devastated me. I took last pictures with it, and I think one last video. And then I threw it away. But I didn't have a choice. I wouldn't have done it otherwise. It's so emotional seeing this, and remembering my beloved jacket. Thank you

Not to disrespect Tom, because I really do respect him, and I really do get the point of this video, but I really hate all this "theres no need for physical objects" nonsense. Having a digital backup of a prized momento *is in no way like having the real object*. Having a real object is much more than just having a memory of that object, or a place/person/time you associate with it. The way the object feels, the shape in your hand, the way it smells, a sound it makes, the way it reflects or refracts the light - these are all things *that you only get by actually having the object*. No digitized backup, at this point in time, can come close to having as much sentimental value as the object itself. Tom is a tech guy, and thats where his sentimental side is too, which I totally understand, but it is absurd to think that you can transfer your sentimentality for a real object onto a digitization of that object. You can't. You might become attached to that backup, because it reminds you of the object, but the digitization itself can never have as much value as the original object did. Also, I am not saying you cannot become sentimental about digital files. I have quite a few files on my PC that I cherish as much as many of my physical objects. My point is that you cannot take a photo of a prized object, and then destroy the object itself without losing anything. Don't go destroying all your stuff just because you can take photos of it, people. That is utter madness. Obviously being overly sentimental, or being a hoarder, can be a big problem - but like anything, there is a healthy middle ground. Keep things that are important to you.

It isn't just about memories and digitisation, it marks the end of his person's association with physical objects. Tom is no longer the Nordics' hoodie guy, he is Tom Scott.

i think its different for every person. this is personally what makes sense for tom scott. for me, i dont get sentimental over souvenirs or valuable things so much as scraps of paper, receipts, ticket stubs, and the like, stuff most people would call trash. i have shoe boxes and piles of these little scraps everywhere. meanwhile my roommate has boxes of every stuffed animals shes ever owned, and i know people who only keep pictures. its all very subjective and personal

a digital file is just a memory, it is a pale shadow of the original. When my parents passed I realized that so much experience was forever lost. when it came time to burn his hoodie Tom had to suppress his desire to save it because he knows that the experience of the actual item is so much more than a digital representation.

I too, have a grey hoody that is very tattered, worn, and has been in my possession for many years (maybe six or seven?) I'm currently looking to get a new zipper for it to replace the one that's currently broken, and will probably get the stitching on it fixed. Don't know that I could actually get rid of it at this point, sorry Tom.
