Had no idea a person needs to spec out what they're doing with a truck and then find the right one. Makes perfect sense.

Yea, it helps if you have a clue about what you are trying to do. Take me for instance. I was thinking of getting into the used car business, so I figured I needed a truck to tow cars with, so I went out and bought myself an F-150 FX4 WITH a tow package! and I thought I was ready to haul cars. But the truth was I didn't have a clue, if I had, I wouldn't have been shopping f-150 gas engine trucks, I would have been looking at something in the neighborhood of f-250 or f-350 diesel trucks. Fortunately for me for various reasons I didn't get into used cars and my F-150 for what I do is just great for the odd times I actually need the bed to haul stuff in it. I have only had a trailer on it once helping my mom move.

you'd be surprised at how many people would come into the dealerships and think they could get a 1/2 ton 4 door truck and think they could tow their boat, gas, gear and the family and their gear inside the truck alll the way to the beach or lake and back, just because the truck has an advertised max tow cap of 10k lbs. But then you ask them how much their boat weighs, and they tell you around 8,800 lbs dry, plus the trailer at 1,100 lb. Then you add in the fuel, and you're at 9,900 to 10,300 lbs. So they think they are going to be fine with an F150 4x4 . But they forget that they are also going to add in the family and all of their gear in the truck. Overload, since the max weight is just that, the max weight. They forgot to read the fine print... "Towing and payload are independent attributes and may not be achieved simultaneously." Then you tell them they need the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost and can only have a 2 wheel drive truck in order to achieve those numbers for the boat alone. They freak out and say they need the 4x4, and don't want to have another vehicle driving behind them with all of the family and gear and food etc. So you take them inside and show them the load charts based on the vehicle configurations. If they are smart and want to keep their family safe, they'll get an F250 that will tow the boat and carry the family in a safe manner to and from the water. But if they don't agree, I won't sell them a truck and tell them that I don't want my name associated with a car crash that could and should have been avoided. Most of them listen and get the proper truck, but I have seen some leave and either come back and get another salesperson to sell them the truck and don't ask about how the truck is going to be used, or simply don't care and go buy the wrong truck from another dealership, because they think they can't afford the larger truck, or simply think they know what they are doing. Believe me, this also happens with guys thinking they can use an SUV to pull their little ski boat and all of their gear as well. So it is the responsibility of the salesperson to ask the appropriate questions and make sure they are buying the proper vehicle to fit their needs, wants and lifestyle. The Big Three have been doing this for a long time, and make it really easy for their sales force to provide the type of service the clients need.

He’s the type of sales person I I try to be, because he’s the type of sales person I seek out when I want to make a purchase of any kind. It can be frustrating when the customer doesn’t want to spend the money they really should to get the proper unit. So, if someone comes in and wants to buy a computer for their kid going into college for industrial design or video editing, I try to help them understand why they should not get a $179 chrome book. Unfortunately, some people still insist on the cheaper route. I totally can relate to being on a budget, but I don’t want them to have the wrong expectations. Awesome video.
@jamesnm21

Keep that same mindset. It's the key to success. And while the $179 chromebook may simply be frustrating to use for the college student, the wrong truck can end up costing more money than getting the right one to begin with, plus the added headaches and frustrations of failed equipment.

Mike is right and makes a lot of sense, I get a lot of equipment from yard sales or free because people tell me the snow blower or riding tractors or many small engine items and I conclude that most people are not knowledgeable about or do not maintain their equipment, I fix 98% of what I get and it is actually very good running after proper maintenance. the average guy thinks chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

Diesel vs. gas--the salesmen usually won't tell you this. As one who has been around diesels for 4+ decades, I will. 2007+ diesels with DPF are a POOR CHOICE for duty cycles that involve stop-and-go urban driving, extended idling, or short-trip duty. Unlike the "old days," this kind of duty will cause constant active regens, DPF issues, and poor fuel economy. Because of these issues, most fleet operators are abandoning diesels in HD pickups. I live near one of the largest oil and gas fields in the US. 20 years ago, most of the fleet pickups working in that oil and gas field were diesel; today less than the 15% are. Cold weather operation in severe or extreme cold (sustained temperatures below 15° F.) will aggravate DPF problems. Current generation diesels are really good for about one thing: sustained runs down the highway.

Yeah, in my work diesels are loosing out as fleet vehicles. Gasers are lasting 200k miles now fairly easy (which is our replacement and auction off mileage threshold )and the initial cost and maintenance of the diesels out weight the benefits. Now most of the fleet is gas with an occasional new diesel for the heavy towing. All our trucks are chassis cab 5500/550 series.

I can see that this vid is several years old but this is one of the most basically informative vids in your collection that most people need to see. AND all of this information applies to the big trucks as well (Dumps, Rolloffs, Tractors, Cement trucks, etc). Specking a truck out properly will ultimately determine your overall productivity from maintenance intervals and costs, to MPG and more. I’m on both sides (pickups and big trucks) but with pickups was trying to decide either gas or diesel and this 3/4 year old video just gave me key info to make my decision because most sales people seem to not know their products in detail.

Good vid. Thank Mike for doing it. It’s nice for people to understand light duty trucks need specked property. The argument of gas vs diesel is something I’ve been talking about for years. A lot of guys are stuck on diesels and don’t wanna hear it tho. It’s a status symbol. I’ve specked out class 8 trucks for my family business for years. I’m kinda a nut for specs.

The 6.4 hemi is by far the best bang for your buck work truck. For a contractor doing short runs makes no sense to go cummins. unless you’ll be hauling over the weight limit of the 6.4. That being said the cummins is far superior and will outlast the hemi but you need to be driving long distance and working it heavy to see any of its benefits and save fuel in the long run.

I had a couple of comments that are a reflection of my own experiences: I agree completely that the truck has to be up to the job. I don't agree that a dually is necessary. I have a 2011 Silverado 3500 SRW w/ standard cab that has the Duramax LML and the 6-Spd Allison . I can't remember what the gears are. It IS 4wd, because on many job sites, you're not getting on or off without 4wd. I matched that with a 14,500 pound PJ Tilt-Deck with upgraded axles. The GVWR on the truck is 11,400, so the CGVWR is 25,900. The trailer weighs 6,000lbs and will carry 12,000lbs. Off-loading 4,000lbs onto the gooseneck means I can can pull that 18,000lb combined weight without exceeding weight limitations on the truck, trailer or my non-CDL license. I needed to park that truck because of the exploding CP4 pump issue and I ended up getting a 2016 F550 diesel to pull that trailer. NOTE: I like a diesel for daily trailer pulling with anything OVER the 10,000 pound trailer class. That said, this brings me to a problem I suggest people watch out for carefully and it's why I am making this comment. I recognize that I'm over-simplifying here, but the three most common trailers that fit into this discussion at all are the 5-Ton, 7-Ton and 10-Ton trailers, whether Gooseneck or "Bumper Pull". (10k, 14k & 20k) If I need to pull a 5-Ton Trailer on a daily basis, I'm going to get a Gasser 1-Ton truck. I have TRIED 3/4 Ton trucks, but there really is a difference and it's far easier to bend a frame than most people realize. I have a 2002 Silverado 2500HD with the 8.1L gasser, and 5-spd Allison that I used to pull a tag trailer on a Class V Curt that grossed out at 13,000 pounds and I bent the frame on that even AFTER welding on steel plate. Moving on... If I need to pull a 20,000lb trailer, then I'm already in CDL territory no matter what I do. Frankly, I would likely just buy a used short wheelbase day-cab road tractor, yank off the 5th wheel and put on either a utility bed or a dump bed. Even if I go to the overpriced dealership down the road from me I can still get something like a T-300 Kenworth or a 4300/4700 International for under $40k. That lets me pull a 10-Ton trailer with air brakes AND have a dump bed that will hold more than 2-3 Tons. Here's the area where it gets tricky... The 7-Ton or 14,000 pound class. I personally think that's the most common sub-CDL trailer among contractors, though I have no statistics to back that up. You can haul a tractor, a skid steer, an excavator (mini) and a lot of other equipment with a 5-Ton trailer. But there's two problems... 1. Not all trailer manufacturers use the raw GTWR numbers, which is OK... IF you make sure you know what numbers they are using. 2. This is the really important one and it's been true for a few years now... If you buy a new Ford or Chevy (I didn't check for Dodge) then you have to watch the numbers closely. Once you spec out a 4wd truck with the diesel engine and heavy duty transmission, because you know you're going to be pulling 7 to 9 Tons, your GVWR rating is going to be over 13,000 pounds, even with single rear wheels. THAT puts you in CDL territory, which means a higher priced driver. Yes, you can cheat the system a bit by upgrading your trailer axles so that it can handle more weight without going to duals. But all that does is let you fly under the radar of the DOT people. It does NOT change the fact that once you're over 26,000 lbs CGVWR, you're in CDL territory. (Up to 36,000lbs if your truck doesn't exceed 26,000 and your trailer doesn't exceed 10,000) The reason I posted this is because most people haven't really noticed that along with trucks getting more capable, they also cracked the weight class.

I have owned all 3 brands in 1/2 ton variety, specked to for exactly what I wanted them to do. Chevy performed awesome, but had warranty issues one after another. The Ford pulled the bass boat perfect, had the heavy tow package and all. It warped front drivers side rotors like they were going out of style. Ford warranty threw parts at that thing like a dart board. Ram 1500 with tow package has done everything I have ever asked it to do. 7k pound boat, gear, luggage, and food for holiday vacation. 700 miles round trip no problem. Pedal to the floor emergency trip to the ER, it will flat boogie! Going 10 years strong now. Never kept a truck past 4 years until this Ram.

This video is great. It all depends on how you spec out a truck and what you are doing with it typically. It is a common misconception when a consumer and sometimes sales staff see a "best in class" towing or payload rating and assume that every 3/4 or 1 ton truck will pull or haul that much weight when it is simply not true.

Exactly Stanley and Mike ,"what are using the van/truck for?".I only run a small maintenance cleaning business here in London.Moving people and cleaning equipment does not require a huge spec vehicle,however the ground maintenance team do need really well spec vehicles as do the builders(gas/electricians and plumbers).However,our vans all look the same,low key no name,so we avoid the pilfering problem.This video was a very educating video and made me realise I need to do some work when we buy vehicles,although my fleet man at my dealership seems to know when I need to change.

If your undercarriage is rusting out, then you have to step back and look at the situation a little better. Yes, I understand that living in areas where there is snow and they 'salt' the roads, then you need to think about how you clean your equipment. the only reason/time I take my trucks/cars to the car wash is to use the high pressure wands on the undercarriage and bed. And believe me, I spend a lot of time and a few dollars every week that the truck is on the road when there is some sort of snow melting going on, and a few weeks after it dries up. (I hand wash the body, and don't wash that part at the car washes.) Heck, even my Toyota trucks lasted a long time, and they are known to have rust issues on the frames. '91 Wrangler, no rust on the body or frame, and I had it on several beaches, swamps and tank trails in Camp Le Jeune, and lived in N.J. with it for about ten years after that. I'm sure that you clean your skid steer, backhoe etc. every time you take it through a lot of mud, sand etc. So why wouldn't you do the same for your other piece of equipment?

It also matters where you live. If you live somewhere with lots of hill or mountains you might want the diesel for the exhaust brake and more torque for towing up hills
@joelschermerhorn5447
@joelschermerhorn5447 4 года назад
I agree. If you live in the mountains, a diesel will pull quicker and get better fuel economy pulling uphill than a gasser, because of diesel's peak torque at lower rpm. (i.e 1600-2000 rpm or so vs gasser's 3000-4000 rpm or so)

Some VERY good points made there - there are also the 'sales people' who are only concerned with maximising their commision by getting the client to up-spend and don't give a brass razzo for what happens when the truck leave the showroom - that's the tech's problem... On the other hand, as suggested in the video, there are the customers who 'know' better than the sales person and won't/ can't spend what is actually needed for their application. With big purchases like this, it is sometimes beneficial to make a three part list - things it must have/do; things it mustn't/should't do; things that don't matter either way but would be nice to have/not have. Also, if you can't currently afford the package you need/want, better to walk away and save some more money than compromise - something that applies to most things - as otherwise you're just going to be disappointed in the long run. 5:55, also whether it is 4x4 or 4x2, tyre package, etc. 15:30-ish, in hill country, the diesel option may be available with engine and/or exhaust and/or transmission brakes which can save a LOT of mechanical brake wear in declines.

I went in to buy a ton truck wanted a 4:10 rear end. The dealer sold me a 3:73 rear end because that was what he could get. I told him is was going to pull a 25 foot gooseneck trailer with a skidsteer plus attachments. This was back in 2008. I got a desiel, one ton truck that will pull everything I needed to do.Thank God I knew what I what'd. Your Salesman is right know what you are going to do with the truck!!! Then find a knowledge sale person you feel right with. It could take more than one stop to get the right Salesman.

I wish I could like this video multiple times. 11:50 is my favorite part. All these backwoods guys who think they know better than engineers making $100k a year to design your truck, guess what they know better than you. If you have 400+hp and 900+ft/lb of torque, you don't need anymore for going down the road. You still need to abide by the traffic laws and all the vehicles around you.

One thing that caught my attention about the whole tuning aspect the governmen takes these diesel spray additional fuel into the cylinders after the combustion occurred as they claim it's better for the environment.what a load crap. People dont just tune for fun and power it's also for long haulers who need the power in reserve and the major efficiencies that the manufacturer has been order to take away. Of course they continue them out to the max in order to keep the longevity of the vehicle but the epa has way to much influence on what is produced.its because of them vehicles look like they do and are made like they are. And the sales guy is a company man too.

The way to determine which rear end to purchase is to look at the final drive ratio of the trans. I have found in most trucks with an automatic will work best for most folks with a 3:73 rear gear unless they are really towing a lot. If you have a 6 speed manual I recommend in most cases a 4:10 rear for the best match. I have had a 3500 SRW dodge 5.9l 6spd 4:10 rear with 500k miles on it. Also had a ford f350 7.3l srw auto with 3:73 rear with 420k miles on it. Neither with engine problems or driveline issues. Pulled heavy trailers with both. The dodge had a heavy service body on it full of tools. Really were just great vehicles. My experience with the diesels vs. gas is that with a gas truck your power comes on in the midrange and up whereas your power in a traditional diesel comes on early and builds throughout the range. I agree that fuel costs have never come down from when the went up 8-10 years ago. That really has hurt diesels. That said, I have no desire to have anything else because I run my trucks so long I just don’t want to fiddle with the issues that I have had with gasoline engines wearing out. Also, another advantage that most people don’t see that I am experiencing right at this moment is the ability to keep fuel on hand. I am going through a post hurricane situation right now and because I run diesel, I’m able to keep a couple of thousand gallons of diesel fuel on hand in tanks which buffers me from not being able to purchase fuel. Meanwhile there’s no gas to be bought within a 50 mile radius of where I live for any amount of money. People are driving for 60 or 70 miles just to fill up their car and when I went over to the next town today I counted 14 vehicles on the side of the road that had run out of gas. I filled up for 55 gallon drums at my local bulk supplier and brought back to be able to run my equipment but most people don’t have an account with a bulk supplier so they’re stuck waiting in three and four hour lines at gas stations trying to fill up their car and may be a few 5 gallon cans to run there portable generators. Gasoline is just not effective to store for most people and since almost all of my equipment runs on diesel then I know that I can afford to store some diesel and if I need to keep my truck running I will be able to. So that’s my reasoning for getting a diesel truck. One way you can avoid the big $10,000 hit all at one time if you do want to get a new vehicle on the regular is also to lease the vehicle and turn it in every couple years. That’s always an option just like it is with heavy equipment. That way you’re spreading out the expense as a payment and you can still deduct it. I can also say this, if I was doing any serious OTR pulling of really large trailers for like hotshot stuff, I would definitely go with a six speed manual if they offered one in the model truck I was considering. Just so more rugged than the automatics. And as long as you’re not spending a lot of time running around town hitting stop signs all the time it’s not that big of a deal. If you spend 80+ percent of your time on the interstate it’s really not an issue. The only automatic that I consider to hold a candle to a standard in reliability is the Allison 1000 that comes in the Chevy, unfortunately the Chevy has their own issues outside of the driveline that hold it back for me. On another subject, DEF is the worst thing to ever happen to the industry. Such BS. A properly tuned diesel engine already burns cleaner than a gasoline engine. If it’s not, then it needs a tuneup or some repairs. But when it comes new from the factory and everything is operating properly it’s a very clean running clean burning system without any of that junk.

Mike came across as "closed" to discourse at first, at least in my opinion. By the end, what Stanley said was clear: namely that Mike was likely just really nervous, never having wanted to do the interview in the first place. As other people have said, Mike, you informed us all wonderfully. THANKS! As for me, I do residential-only snow removal, so I never use a plow. I haul a single axle (3,500 lb) trailer when I need to bring my Grasshopper around. And I only buy used. My two requirements are 4x4 and a Crew Cab... a four-door essentially. Very simple. The make matters not. :)

When you mentioned about buying the 5500 and possibly getting into DOT and licensing issues, I was reminded of my experience when buying a 1 ton dually. If you are unfortunate enough to live in a state like Massivetwoshits, any vehicle with more than 4 tires on the ground, that is not a camper, must be registered as a commercial vehicle. While you won't need a CDL because you won't be exceeding the 26,000 weight limit, you'll still be forced to carry the chock blocks, triangles, spare bulbs, etc... and you'll have to pass the much more expensive yearly inspection. And don't forget tbe commercial insurance they will require. Unless you really need them, you re much better off with SRW.

This guy is spot on, especially at 7:10, "They all make good trucks. It is up to us as salesmen to make sure they get the proper truck." I have said that countless times while working at different dealerships. In fact, I have pulled other salesmen off a sale due to the fact that they were not asking the correct questions in order to build or find the proper truck for that person. And I have seen salespeople that have been selling cars for years make that mistake, even with SUV's.

People rarely spec out a truck like they once did. Unless you are buying a fleet of trucks and you know ahead of time and order ahead of time. Most people buy off the lot and assume so much. Use to be a time when people ordered trucks exactly as they wanted it, regardless if they needed it or not. Production lines have limited the amount of trucks spec’d out to do specific jobs. I searched for months to get my F450 I looked in every state and I finally found what I wanted and needed in a Missouri. Only thing it came with a moon roof and it’s the one thing I wish it didn’t have. Couldn’t find one with the features I wanted/needed without the moon roof being part of the package. I have instant electric heat, it’s a diesel. I gave the PTO option. One thing it still needs, an air lift package.

Great video! Mike did an awesome job! He’s absolutely right. I’m an engineer and things are designed for a reason and with limitations. Thanks Mike for bringing it to our attention that we need to spec out our truck depending on the application. I’m curious where a good source is for the spec sheets. Do the dealers / manufacturers publish true specs or are they inflated to appear better than their competitors? As for my experience, I have a 2003 Chevy Avalanche with over 230,000 miles. Some basic and routine maintenance. A rebuilt tranny after 150,000mi. No major issues and I do a LOT of towing. Sometimes I even over load it myself (safety factors are there for a reason right? lol). I’ll drive this one till the wheels fall off. Thanks again!

Really informative and great video. Unfortunate but I haven’t met that many people in the auto sales industry who are this honest. Both consumer and sales guy needs to be honest to make a proper purchase, great video. Might be curious to have him talk about the guy that buys a vehicle for one purpose then changes; better to trade in for a different one or mod the existing one. Lots of variables here but curious to his thoughts.

Truck payload is 3500 and max fifth wheel tow weight is 14500 pounds. The truck gets about 8 mpg towing, gas mileage is okay but I sure don't have the expense and maintenance of a diesel. As a fence contractor, a flat bed is a absolute nessestity. I cant imagen running a bed, especially a. Short bed. My 8.5x7 flatbed is sometimes to small, The roughness of heavy plate is nice to when you are constantly loading and unloading heavy fencing and post. I take it some places that a trailer just isn't a option... Course I also run used pickups, my current pickup is a 2001 with 380,000 chock one up to no salt.

I like a 3/4 ton diesel with a 3.73 gear for pulling a skid loader or larger dump trailer simply because the turbo brake saves the real brakes. For regular utility trailer/small dump trailer or plowing work I like a 3/4 ton gas truck with a 4.10 gear Once I get into a gooseneck I like a dually with a Diesel engine and Atleast a 3.73 or 4.10 gear. For payload hauling in a 4500/5500/6500 I prefer gas with a 4.88 gear because I don’t add a trailer and move into CDL A license territory.

A truck, just like a garage, should be way bigger than what you think you need. You'll never hear a guy say, "I wish I had built a smaller garage". I don't often need my 2014 F350 Diesel truck's maximum capacity, , , but I never feel like I wish I had just bought a 1/2 ton. I bought my used Diesel truck for about what a new 1/2 ton would have been. Glad I own it now.

Probably why Chevy had 24k rating on their 3500 when rest were 30k, over 26k == CDL which allowed the chevy to skirt under that rule vs others which weren't able to. He said that over 26k you need cdl which don't hear him say it but depends on where you live. Some states you don't need CDL unless its commercial use. Some states you can do well over 30k and more as long as its personal use.

I'll spend the 10 grand on the aesthetics of the diesel. I like the purr it makes going down the road, the whistle of the turbo, the smell, etc. I work 7 days a week in the summer unless it's raining so what else am I gonna buy with that money?? ... a fishing boat?? Yeah right lol ... maybe when I sell off everything and retire, I'll finally have the time to use it. For the time being, the simple pleasures of driving what I enjoy are the luxuries I can afford myself. He forgot the most important part of buying a new truck ... don't. Research the year and engine you want and buy ones that's slightly used to save yourself the 20% depreciation as soon as you drive it off the lot. It's still a write off and many of the diesels have certain years/engines that are far superior to others. When buying new, you don't know if that new engine they just came out with is a miracle under the hood or a nightmare that will sink your business. Same goes for transmissions and other components. A simple search on RU-vid of the model and year will quickly show the most common issues (unless of course it's brand new) ... best to do this before signing on the line.

Great advice to think about when buying. I am in Australia where the Ram truck series is now available and the dealership I went into to look at the 1500 Express. The salesman did not ask me why I wanted the Ram 1500 after I had told him that I had already done my investigation into my needs (ie trailer weight etc) I had chosen the model spec and price limit, test driven one of the 1500 Express models elsewhere and been very happy with it's performance and practicality yet all he wanted to do was show a 2500 Laramie at almost twice the price!! Needless to say he got no sale....
