Well overdue for this oil change. I believe that the last time I did it was when I serviced the pump, but that was definitely 300 hours ago. 1197.9 hours are on the tractor, the engine rebuild I did was at 799.9. It's a messy job for sure. I used 10-40 blended synthetic this time. We'll see if that controls the misting that causes dirt to collect around the pump. I get the same misting on my engine and oil filter when I use synthetic in the Onan.

Good video. Here are cliff notes. 1/4" allan drain plug. Stens 120-265 filter. Takes about 3.5 quarts of 10w-30. Leave filter off when filling until mostly full to purge air.

Another great video Craig, and it is one of the messier jobs on these machines. On my 520-H and 418-A with the Eaton 1100, I use regular 10W30 and don't have the "misting" past the seals issue that you are seeing. I also leave the filter off while adding the new oil as a way for the trapped air to escape. Much easier than getting to those bolts.

Thanks Andy. In the winter, I would have to wait 10 minutes for the oil to heat up to where I could lift the blade. With Mobil 1 10w30 I can use it much quicker, it warms faster. Kind of a trade off I suppose.

As mentioned, there is a drain plug on the bottom of the tranny. Suggestion dont install the new filter until after the new oil is in. Also, removal of the rear wheel makes the filter change a snap.

Nice job Craig! It was nice to see the sled in there at the end. You are very thorough so I know you'll get it done right. We did a seal change on my brother's old Blair Morgan sled last season just before we decided to get a different motor for it. He sold that sled shortly after that and now has a 2011 Ski-Doo. I can't wait for snowmobiling season already. I'd still be excited even if I wasn't getting a new sled. Here's to a great season. Cheers!

This is my first 2 stroke I’ve had apart, but good to get familiar with it. I’ll have an update soon, hopefully have some time this weekend to turn some wrenches. I can’t wait to ride again, hope we get loads of snow!

Good deal. My 520 is overdue for a trans mission change. I need to pull the axle seals and get those changed out as well. YOU might want to check and see if your misting is coming from one of the smaller oil seals around the shifter at the top. I replaced mine and still have the seal to replace the brake drum shaft as that is leaking slowly. But in regards to your sled. I know this late but I hope you went ahead and decided to replace both of your crank seals? when one goes, the other won't take long to go for some reason. Most likely because of the pressure built from having the new one. I did the PTO side on my wife's 96 ZR580 efi engine and that lasted two years and she lost compression, thank the Lord, on the way back to the hotel on last day of our last trip that year. AND we were able to barely get it started to get all of the way back. So that was a blessing. But deff rule of thumb from now on for me is if one seal needs replacement, I pull the cases apart and replace them both.

I hate doing maintenance sometimes, but its got to be done. I been looking for a small tractor to use at my land but I want something I can work on also. like a fixer upper.

Smart to change the tranny oil like you do. Help keeping the tractor ready year round. Good time of year to do any repairs to the snow mobile necessary now rather than later too. Cheers Craig

Just a thought - if using Mobil-1 synthetic oil creates leaks, I would imagine your transmission has some sludge and debris buildup in it that will need to be cleaned out. The synthetic oil has detergents in it which clean any sludge or contaminants off of the internal parts and blend it in with the oil. If the machine had a history of sludge buildup in the trans over the years as the seals/gaskets began deteriorating, switching to synthetic oil would have cleaned all the sludge and exposed all the dryrotted gaskets or seals, causing them to leak again.

I had the entire hydro apart and the pump in a video I did some years ago. The pump was super clean, just had bad seals from 30+ years of hard use.

I have two Troy bilt gtx tractors both with eaton 11 hydros. The first one I bought from a guy who maintained meticulously. The second one,the guy bought it used and never changed the hydro oil. I found this out when I asked him what type oil he used he told me never changed it because it never gave him problems. Anyway, I was surprised to see how clean it was when I changed it. It looked like new oil and anytime I change the oil on either of them the oil looks immaculate.the first tractor has been used year round for over 20 yrs and I did have to replace the pump shaft seal and bearing as seal wore and started sucking air into the system but works great now. Just wondering why yours came out discolored as it really shouldn't be. Also as well as keeping the fins clean it's also important to keep the fan clean. I frequently wipe mine off with degreaser. A clean fan pushes air more efficiently. Thanks for the great vid.

The oil doesn’t really get dirty in a hydro unless the hydro is failing. If there’s a filter it stays pretty clean, assuming moisture stays out. I’ve been using synthetic oil in mine the past several years, definitely is a lot more responsive in cold weather.
@enriqueecheverria8592
@enriqueecheverria8592 2 года назад
Synthetic is is why the oil seeps through the fittings, and gaskets. Conventional would be wise to stick with. However, due to you running Synthetic already. Instead of semi-synthetic, try using high mileage 10-w40. It contains extra spellers and will decrease the leaks over time.

Is it ok if I drain the fluid through the hex nut? Or is it better if I drain it through the tube? Also when adding the fluid to the transmission should the engine be running so it goes through?

I run Mobil 1 full synthetic 10w-30. The Eaton Hydro transmissions indicate 10w30, but the full synthetic really makes them more responsive.
