The Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada is a destination trail for hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders and buggy drivers. B & R Merz began their CDT journey early in 2019, meeting many new friends along the way and creating lasting memories. Because of snow in the high altitudes, they skipped the greater portion of Colorado and have dreams of returning to the trail and completing the trail drive. In the meantime, we are replacing the light rubber tires with a heavier style that will hopefully withstand the miles still ahead.
These adventures only spark the imaginations of what our courageous forefathers undertook to traverse the western plains and mountains when they traveled from St. Louis the the western regions and the logistics of dealing with wagon repairs along the way, without the comforts of pickups and horse trailers for support.
Hats off to the Merz family for following t heir dreams and checking another item off their bucket list. You can follow their adventure on their published blog below:

Thank you again Mr Engles, another very interesting video. When I was going through my apprenticeship back in the 70s I had the honour of working with 2 tradesmen made in virtually the same mould as yourself. Easy going, laid back, fellows who went about their work with gay abandon. Very hard for an apprentice to follow at times, but the end result was always perfect. Both gone now, but I think of these guys daily for the skills and attitude towards the task at hand they gave me. Most of our work was done on equipment built in the early days of electrification here in Australia, very old but is good condition. This is why I look forward to your videos, they take me back to a bygone era of working with minimum technology, hands, brain power and respect for the job at hand. Thank you very much for your time and energy. Cheers from down under and please stay safe.

Back on June 1st, 1973, My girlfriend, her younger brother, and I rode our horses from south western Oregon to Whitehall, Montana. It took us 58 days. We probably could have gone all across the country by that time, we arrived in such good shape. It's a kind of thing that made you appreciate cars, grocerie stores, and outhouses! We camped at one place near the Snake River that had been visited by Lewis & Clarke. That was a real thrill to know they had been there! I know just how you felt on your trip!!

I am amazes, not surprised, that the wood held up so well. I tell you if I was to build the wheel it would have lasted 500 feet. Can you imagine the shock the wood went through with no rubber. Our forefathers knew what they were doing. And these videos are a testament to the craftsman of old kept alive by Dave. I look forward to see this every Friday. Know that we appreciate you and your slow methodical way of doing things. No wasted effort and years of experience quite evident in this set of videos and something to show at the end of it all.

I've always wanted to just jump on a horse like they did in the old days and just start heading out. No particular destination, just riding until it gets dark and then settling down for the night. Dave’s got a pretty good life there me-thinks....small town, mountains, beautiful scenery, wide open spaces, a cozy shop to work in, especially during those winters!, working with old things from better days, using beautiful wood to make new “old” things, and just a wonderful easy-going personality.....kinda my bucket list right there come to think of it!!

Dave...your Trek to Great Falls reminds me of the Summer when I spent three months with Fred and Barbera on a Ranch outside Zortman, down near the Missouri River, as a boy. No Electricity, No Running Water, No Television, No Telephone, No Central Heat, No Flush Toilet, had an Old Outhouse instead...PEEEUW!!! Pretty Old West Living' to be sure. Living Accommodations was a Very Old 4 Room Shack with a really Low Ceiling of a House in literally the Middle of Know Where Montana...miles & miles & miles from anyone. Heat was supplied by a Big Ole' Cast Iron Wood Stove. Yes...that meant we had to Chop & Split Firewood by hand with an Axe. We did however have a couple of Luxuries! We had a Refrigerator and Kitchen Stove that ran on Propane. And I remember in the evenings when all the Work was done we either Listened to the CB Radio or Played Buck Owens Records on an Old Portable Record Player. Both were Connected to a Car Battery! Twice a day I Hand Milked the Cows. Twice a day I had to Hand Carry 2 Five Gallon Buckets of Water to the Kitchen Crock. Mostly what I did everyday was Ride Horses all day long Herding Cattle or Horses from one Distant Pasture to another with an Indian Ranch Hand who really knew his way around that Vast Country...he was a Great Guy! Kept me in Stitches Constantly! Some days we spent Fixing Fences or going to Town for Supplies and doing Laundry at the Laundromat with Barbera. Barbera Prepared all the Meals Daily. She was a Good Cook with a Very Sweet Personality and a Very Pretty Young Woman too! I will Never Forget the first day, we Rolled in Quite Late and was Very Dark with no Moon. I got out of the Pickup Truck and Heard this Blood Curdling Screaming from the Prairie. Sounded like a Woman Screaming for Her Life! I was Terrified! "What's That!" I exclaimed aloud. Fred, my Host for that Summer, said, "awww, that's a Mountain Lion." Five Decades later I learned he was Right! A Female Mountain Lion does indeed sound like a Terrified Screaming Woman. I know because I looked it up on RU-vid ;)

Yes, but remeber those are old (or at least "oldish") implements, that actually have a decent margin of use beyond specs. I wouldn't dare push anything recently designed that far, probably not even close to their stated limits...

Great life advice. As one who has been fortunate to come much farther in life than he ever expected, I agree wholeheartedly. And I applaud your personal example. Very cool! My bucket list, thankfully, has been getting shorter. But as I've become older as discovered something my younger self knew but didn't really think much about - that when it's all said and done, your family is the real treasure and satisfying thing in life. The family investments you make in your younger life pay the greatest dividends later on. The bucket list is great, and I've enjoyed mine, but it would be nothing without the family around. I'm gathering you know that too. Great video and sage advice. Very excellent, as always.

Excellent--and a very nice mule at 1:41. We used to try to raise blond mules out of our Belgian mares, we had several but lost several as well. I never really had a bucket list, just whatever came into my head to try I did. Some of course were failures but those were the ones I learned from the most. I have noticed something recently, we had a lot of pictures of our days past, but we never look at them anymore. I wonder if that is what happens to everyone. I have had to slow down some since turning 80, I am learning that a man has to KNOW his limitations.......

if anyone would like a brief excurion into the life of a wheelwright this one covers it, just simply superb. from deconstruction to rebuild this has it all in less than 20mins. but of course what it doesnt represent the depth and breadth of your knowledge and skill to just do and do to perfection. out of interest, how many more miles can she expect out her new sweet running wheels? The editing is a joy as well, keeping the interest at a high from start to finish at the right level, keep it up Dave.
