I need a 1000 lb wheel for a chandelier. We have the hub already made, but I need to make the spokes and felloes also. This wheel will be the same as the rear wheels we built for the Borax wagons. This shows the preparations necessary to build this large wood wheel.

It's the mark of a true craftsman to make the work seem mundane and easy to do. Watching your videos makes me think I could build a wheel. I'm arrogant enough to think I could do a good job on ONE - one fellow, one spoke, but the thought of making that many duplicates, that all work together to mske a functional wheel... Much less enough to make two or more wheels close enough to look like a matching set - oi, my brain explodes. Thank you for taking the time to put together these videos - they really are a treasure.

Your videos should be watched by anyone who wants to make a documentary of how things are made. The seamless editing provides close ups of all the processes and effects of those processes in the workshop, combined with the dulcet tones of the narrative they take us along the journey of converting rough lumber and steel into working product. Thank you Mr Engels for allowing us to watch your skills being used to create these masterpieces of your trade.

Mr. Engels My hats off to you sir. Thank you for sharing your skill. Back in 1982 I apprenticed at an agricultural museum in Ontario. My job was to make historical replicas that could be used on a daily basis in a living 1880s town. A lot of knowledge and practice was based on historical records or word of mouth from an “old timer” who used watch his grandfather work. I wish RU-vid was around back then. I worked with a fine man named Terry who was a self taught Blacksmith and Wheelwright. Terry learned a lot from the local Mennonite community who still were making buggies and wagons. We used to purchase steam bent felloes from them for our replicas. Our methods were old school using only hand tools in front of the public visitors. (We weren’t trying to make a living) I wish I knew about the traveller settings. I only used it for circumference work and sizing the steel tire. Most of the Ash trees had died out in our area so we used white oak for our wheels. Anyway enough rambling thanks again for passing on your skill.

Thank you for putting it on RU-vid kind regards John

What I like about your videos is that they show in an uncut fashion the routines of running a shop like yours. And especially, you do not have some of that hideous music blaring out totally drowning the sound of the tools etc.

This is the kind of work I love to do in my shop. While the one project may be repetitive, each project is unique. I love to see a pile of parts on one side shrink and the pile on the other side grows as they undergo a process. Just like the proverbial in box and outbox for a "desk job" only a whole lot more interesting. And at the end of the day you can actually stand back and see what you've done. Your work is real, not in a file cabinet or hard drive. "Run of the mill" is always cool.

Fantastic as always!!! In most of wood treatment tanks it is standard procedure to include a vacuum cycle. Product penetration is MUCH deeper after. And the use of diluting minerals can (must) be avoided this way (they start boiling in vacuum). For sure it has to be verified what level of negative pressure your treatment tank can withstand, you do not want it to implode. If OK it needs only a little low cost vacuum pump and some valves to be added in the compressed air circuit. Let more videos coming!!!

I am surprised, with all the other clever innovations you have acquired, made, visualized and customized that you have neither (or apparently have) a press for clamping multiple similar things (like those Felloes) nor saw dust collection. On the other hand, you need to pick up/sweep after every operation so it is probably more trouble than it's worth.

Do you ever get sooty moulds on/in your linseed mineral sprites treated timbers? In QLD AUS a lot of DIYers use this treatment on decking and get mould groths in time. The moulds use the linseed as a "food" and stain up the wood. The solution is to add a mouldacide to the treating solution to keep the timbers clean.
