12:07 putting a timestamp here for replaying as i love this part so much. Crazy how simply increasing the length of a note could change the feel of the entire groove. And of course thanks to your great playing as well!
Great topic mate! After recording many, many drummers over the years, this is a very common thing that comes up that people have not really given any real thought or attention to. Great points and explanation as usual.
So pleased I found this video. I've been playing drums for a few years now, open hi hats have always been something I've wanted to do but felt stupid saying I don't get how to do it. Great vid. Thanks!
Great, simple explanation and you cover a lot of things to consider. Showing the practical examples and which genre they are normally associated with help a lot as well. Thanks!
I'm commenting before watching because this is something I'm working on right now. I've been opening and closing it on the and of 2 and 4 for a couple of weeks now but I just started doing it on the down beats. It was tricky for me to do that and play the kick at the same time. I'm kinda getting it but my biggest issue is I'm not closing it in time sometimes. I hope you touch on tips for that. Thanks
Hey Darryn, great content. That snare sound is the truth ! Can you detail model and more important, the tuning to achieve that fat sound ? Thanx in advance.
It's an early 60s Ludwig Supra aluminium shell. My dad bought it in 1963 if I remember correctly. It's tuned pretty low with a zero-ring and a DrumDot. The head is a Remo Ambassador. It's an easy sound to get and yet it sounds so great. Thanks for the comment.
This is an interesting topic, when you start with hi hats open on beat one can you do a video continuing through beat 2,3 and four syncopating rhythms against this option.
