WHEN AND WHEN NOT TO DO POSTERIOR HEEL SPUR MINIMALLY INVASIVE

Minimally invasive foot surgery has many advantages over traditional procedures and this includes treatment of posterior heel pain. However, some limitations do exist. There are advantages to both open and percutaneous techniques and disadvantages. Some patients are not as amenable to percutaneous techniques for retrocalcaneal heel spur. When to proceed and when not is important.

I had this surgery six weeks ago. My Achilles tendon wasn't detached. It was sliced in half and the heel spur and Hanglund's deformity was removed. My doctor trained under Dr. Andrews...the best sport's medicine doctor in the country. Alabama!

Been dealing with this for 6 years, now it’s in my other foot! Slicing the tendon seems to be the best idea yet. I won’t let them remove and reattach it because of the 6 month or more recovery.

How old are you, and how did the recovery go? Scary to think to cut the achilleas tendon in half! Ouch!

Finally after watching video’s I found one that says yes. The morning’s are my worst. It takes me about an hour to get functioning even when I put my shoes on. No my other foot tendon is sore. I believe due to the weight shift. I’m trying not to do surgery but I don’t know how to get rid of the spur.

I hope you will confirm my understanding of what your video SEEMS to say rules out a minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approach: If I understand you correctly, MIS was not judged appropriate here because, "the tendon is fairly significantly tethered with the spur." It is not merely that both conditions (heel spur and Haglund's Deformity) are present that rules out MIS; instead, the discriminator is 'significant tethering of the tendon with the spur,' which is what requires the open approach because it requires moving the tendon forward (employing a Murphy's procedure and re-tacking down the tendon, in effect lengthening the tendon). Yes? Regardless, thank you for perhaps answering the question foremost in my mind, upon having learned (after several years of pain) that I have BOTH a heel spur AND Haglund's Deformity. I had hoped to find a surgeon who would employ minimally invasive techniques to deal with both problems, as I am a believer in the better outcomes and faster healing from such approaches as a general rule. So, I've been investigating to learn when such techniques are and are not recommended. (Not the answer I'd hoped for, if so, but one that would provides me your concurrence with, and my own acceptance of the open procedure now being recommended to me by my surgeon.)

I’m in the same boat, doc says he’s coming in from the side. Detaching and reattaching. Trying to find a video on how that’s done.

Can this surgery be done without detaching and re-attaching the Achilles tendon? My fear is that I'll never be the same after that. Granted, I'm not a spring chicken, so maybe that doesn't really matter.

That's my horrible pain . I have been to many doctors some say we have to remove the spur and it a safe surgery and other want to remove spur and Fixing the Achilles tendon with screws and other advice me to not to do this surgery justified that no matter the it goes right my condition then will be worst from mine now . I do the shocking waves and help a while but no progress and sur go bigger. I'm not sure what I can do this a pain in my lower body littery.

How long is down time? I’m 5’”8 240 lbs. I was told by a very young foot Dr that I need to lose weight first. Is that true? I injured my foot by slamming it into concrete steps with open toe sandals a few years ago. I swear I felt every bone in my foot slam to the back of my heel. Now I have this as well as a plantar spur developing.
