In this video I show you different stages that worm castings go through from starting a new worm bin right up till you get to see the finished castings ready for your garden.
I talk about what time is need for worm castings to be finished by your worms, and how long it take for the worms to process all the carbon and food in the bin and break it down into gardening gold.
I discuss what worm castings should look and feel like when then are finished and the worms should be removed from them and harvested.

So, I accidentally crated a worm bin. They've been thriving for over a year now and not once have I thought about removing the castings. Lol. I rotate the dirt out. Now I have too many worms to just take the dirt out for my plants like before. I'm so happy I found your channel. Thank you for your time.

Quick Q: How long does it take your worms to break down that size container & how many worms do you have per tub? I'm using 250 red wigglers in about a sqft area being fed every 3-4 days with about 2 handfuls of food scraps. (Watermelon, squash, pumpkin, chard, lettuce, older breads, apple cores, banana peels, pears cores.)
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Год назад
Hey Mobius, thank you for visiting the channel! I am not sure how many worms I have in each bin the most are in the top two bins. Once I take the bottom bin and refill it and move it to the top it generally takes about about a month for them to break it all down, as this happens I am constantly adding new food until the cardboard and coco is broken down, by the time it gets to the bottom (the bin) it is full processed and ready for harvest. 👍
@mobiusprolix8454
@mobiusprolix8454 Год назад
@@TheWormWhisperer Sweet deal. I'm sure I have a while to go. Supposedly the red wigglers I have can double every 3 months, according to Uncle Jim's Worm Farm. I'm sure you have LOTS of wiggly friends to get those containers done in 1 month. Great work, great video & great connection to your chat! 👍

another great video! I have two bins of worms. one is red wigglers and the other is my original earth worms. I'm upgrading to a bath tub vermicompost bin. can I combine the red wigglers and earth worms in my new bin? if not, then I'm thinking I might just release the earth worms in to my garden and concentrate on the red wigglers. ty
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Год назад
Great question. Personally I don't think there is any reason to keep earthworms, they are not near as good at composting as red wigglers and they take up space in the bin that could slow down the breeding of composting worms in the tub. Good luck with your new tub!

If worm castings make their way to the bottom would reintroducing them back to the top make them better once it gets back to the bottom?
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer 2 года назад
Hey thanks for the question John! In my experience I would say no. If you're farming composting worms they like to start at the bottom and work their way up to the top. Once the worm castings are there, they have tons of micro life living down there. Mixing them up again is not going to be good for all that micro life in there, some may say that it is giving more oxygen to the castings by bring them to the top, and while that's true, it's also true that composting worms are also natural oxygenators down at the bottom of the bin. Introducing some worm castings to another bin however is a whole another story and I recommend doing this with bottom castings and moving all the life that comes with them to help your new bin get going faster!

so pretty much normally you have some brown cardboard or black and white newspaper visibility in the bin but when everything is cover with worm casting, it is time to collect black gold!?
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Год назад
Hi Mark welcome to the channel and thank you for watching! The worms will actually eat the brown cardboard and newspapers. You will see them at the start of the worm bin and as time goes on and the worms eat the cardboard and newspaper it will start to disappear. This means that the worms have eaten it and pooped it out, once they have eaten all the food and cardboard in the bin the worm castings are ready for harvest. There should be no cardboard or newspaper left at this point of harvesting. Hope this helps you out with harvesting your castings!

Hey, thank you for your comment and watching! This is a closed worm bin however it has lots of places for oxygen to get i for the worms! Never put your worms in any kind of air tight container it will kill them! 😉

Method to protect worm bin from ants and rats.pls share
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer 8 месяцев назад
Hey thank you for joining us on the channel! Both of these things will not hurt your worms, however you don't want either one. I would get a few large rat traps and put them around your bin with some peanut butter, for the ants you can get some organic spray and spray it around your bin to try to keep them out of there! Good luck and happy worm farming!

So let me get this straight we don't use dirt? We just put cardboard and peels in there and let them eat up?
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer 11 месяцев назад
Hi Jonathan, thanks for watching the channel! It's more like carbon and nitrogen that can be added to your bin. So for example cardboard is a carbon, and peels are a nitrogen. But you don't have to use these or you can use a combination of them. So for example you can use leaves, coco coir or already composted waste as carbon, then you can use banana peels, grass, weeds, fresh leaves etc. as nitrogen. But back to your question yes you can just put those two things in the correct amounts and they will "eat them up". This video talks more about creating a worm bedding for your worms to live in. I think it can help you out! :) Let me know how it goes :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9S4Y7Bksoqc.html

@@TheWormWhisperer cardboard/paper has a very high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of 350:1. This is a lot of “brown” and no “green.” Ideal food for a vermicomposting bin has a ratio between 20:1 and 30:1. Putting too many high-carbon substances in the bin slows down composting.

@Mikel P the point I was making is people can over carbon their worms. Just like they can over feed their worms.

@Mikel P whatever you put into your worm bin isnt gone is 5-7 days. This is called over feeding. (Excess )
