On this episode of Boxing After Dark, we take a look at the 1995 Heavyweight Bout between Legendary Undisputed Champ Riddick Bowe and the outspoken Giant Jorge Luiz Gonzales in the State of Nevada.
@@craigmack-cv3cpGonzales had all the physical tools. He didn't train right so we will never know how good he could have been. The mental side of boxing is just as important as the physical side.
@@maxv6837 once again Bowe would have beat him up that’s my opinion! .I don’t care if he trained 24hrs a day … he still wasn’t beating Riddick . Plus ain’t no man with hairdo like that supposed be champ .. 😂he put ya boy to sleep 💤 😂
@@craigmack-cv3cp I didn't like Gonzales, so he was definitely not my boy. He was very unlikeable but very entertaining. Golota, on the other hand, beat your boy down twice and retired him from boxing. Golota was no all time great. He lost to a cruiserweight and got starched in less than a round by Lewis.
Man he certainly had the potential to. The harsh truth is he didn’t always do his best. How the f does Galota get the better of him twice before he fouled himself out?
@@geraldfriend256 he couldn’t motivate himself to train, most times. He had everything you need,, except commitment.. To be honest,, Tyson, Lewis and Bowe ,, all had a window of time,, in which they were pretty much, impossible to beat..
I’m surprised more people don’t watch these great pieces. Hopefully your name can get out there. I figured a million at least would love these legendary documentaries.
The hype was real about Gonzalez. I remember at the time hating him and feeling terrible that Bowe could be battered silly which bothered me as a 15 year old kid but then I watched this live and couldn't believe how happy this sport could make me feel 😁😁😁
Did ya see the Bowe vs Golata fight? It's right up there with the most unprofessional moment ever in the sport. I mean, hitting your opponent in the d!ck so many times and so often that you lose by dq? I felt that same level of happiness you described when I watched Tyson make Golata quit on the stool.
@@LarsonPetty Yes I did!!!! Live!!!! That riot felt like I was witnessing the Kennedy assassination or something cos it was so crazy and I'm watching it happen! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@LarsonPetty Yeah I watched that too live as Golota went full quit mode and shoved his guys as he quit, I panicked for Mike then too but Andrew Golota let his issues beat his abilities
The good thing about this video is the commentary................. ............ ............ It’s about 10 minutes after the action has been completed.
Bowe looked like a beast. The bad hair guy had a chin no question he should have been down by the third with the way Bowe unloaded. It's that sort of punishment that can take the sharpness and reflexes out of a fighter so long, by the time he's 'recovered', age got him.
The 90's saw some of the greatest talent in the history of the sport. Fans like me were truly spoiled at the level of talent we were treated to. Just look at the state of boxing now. Especially the HW's. Horrible doesn't even begin to describe it.
You mean a big stiff plodder like Bowe? Yeah, I can imagine him having a close fight with Dillian Whyte and getting absolutely embarrassed by Tyson Fury.
@@lifehints8196 Ask google, Google has all the answers, if you can't be bothered.... Yes...EA have literally been bringing out boxing games for at least 25yrs, and they're developing fight night round 5 right now👍
@@GoldnApeKing But undisputed isn't a full game yet, it's still very much in development and it's not even on console yet, so until it's an actual game it doesn't count, but I'm hopeful it's good and doesn't let us down the same way fight night has in the last few games. But it seems promising from the RU-vid vids👍
I didn't appreciate Bowe as much as he deserved. I was a Holyfield fan. But Bowe was a very amazing champion that I took for granted. He should be proud of his record. He will always be our champion!
I saw the second Bowe fight against Holyfield at my neighbor's house way back in the day (for those of you old enough to remember it, that was the one where the guy parachuted into the ring mid-fight). Everyone in the room (myself included) was SHOCKED when the judges gave the fight to Holyfield. As far as I'm concerned, Bowe went 3-0 against Holyfield but that's just my personal opinion.
So proud of you Riddick your a bright spot on this non TV watching cowboy from Brandywine life , I'm glad I got to meet you and your baby boy God bless you Mr lion heart !
An in shape (eg 1992-3) Riddick Bowe is the perfect heavyweight boxer. Had no weaknesses. Pulverizing jab, fast hands, incredible ability to fight inside, threw combos, went to the body. didn’t have to counter all that often but vs Holyfield he proved he was a capable counter puncher as well. His endurance was top notch during that time as well. And he had a great chin.
@@Rocatagliata25 Yes, he beat both. Remember the climate though. For Lewis and Bowe, the amateurs were a stepping stone to the pros. For the Cubans, it was their life. He's a couple of years older than Bowe (same as Lewis) but had so much more amateur experience than both of them.
I'd add Larry Holmes vs George Foreman. Larry beat Ray Mercer to win a title shot, so he wasn't completely out. It's a shame we couldn't have got that senior league match.
Bowe seemed like a nice sort of guy outside of the ring but in the ring he was one bad dude especially if he was pissed off at the opponent! As for Gonzales, he was also a seriously bad dude. The punches he took were amazing. Lots of bullies go down easily when punched but not this guy. He just could not connect with his own punches. Big fellows both - They would easily take out Fury and Wilder!
Gonzales would not have a hope beating fury, lets be real, Gonzales bad stamina would cause him to gas out after 5 rounds, fury can do 12 rounds easy. I do agree Bowe would most likely take it to Fury break him down and finish him.... but Gonzales come on that would never happen.
I saw this fight! Bowe wanted to hurt this guy badly! Bowe was one of my favorite fighters! To bad his confidence started to fade near the end of his career
I'm not sure it was either his confidence or work ethic. We all know the problems he has now bless him, and that started maybe as far back as the first Holyfield fight. After the first Holyfield fight, his prime was over IMO. Bowe would quite happily take 2 punches to hit an uppercut............and I think that caught up with him pretty quickly. He went on, and went on winning for so long because he was a natural generational talent.
Bowe said "and don't come back in the ring with that cut!"😂 I thought the thumbnail was a meme, punches so hard, it knocked his hairline back. But that's his real hair🤣
I remember that fight. But we often have these characters- or opposites - good and evil. Etc. Gonzales could have been a force, but the lack of stamina could explain why
When Bowe was in shape, motivated, focused and determined, he was the best boxer on the planet. PERIOD! If only he had taken the fight against Lennox Lewis when he could/should have right after the fight against Evander Holyfield....
Bowe deserves a lot of credit for this fight, he want into the bout with a mission to destroy Gonzales and he did it, it made all of America happy that night.
I attended this fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in June 1995. You could hear Gonzales hit the floor when he fell. I met Larry Merchant in the lobby that afternoon and asked him his pick. He just smiled and said..."Bowe."
Merchant tells it like it is, but the "Woke/soft" generation couldn't take the brutal truth. Which left Larry without a job and left in the past. Same thing happened to Paulie for Showtime. You're only allowed to be outspoken, when defending the left and liberal. Everyone else gets canceled and silenced.
Bowe without doubt, should be named with the great’s of yesteryear,he should have done a ot more.lack of training, the love for food.bowe is my favourite boxer,a gentleman in+ out of the ring.
The book I have on Riddick bowe, says that before this fight, mills lane went to each dressing room, asking each fighter if he was willing to shake hands after the fight?Riddick bowe said he was willing, but Jorge said no he wasn't willing to shake hands after the fight
Gonzalez didn't have the skills and talent to be a top heavyweight but he did manage to talk enough crap into a big payday. Bowie took him his pedestal.Didn't hear much from him after Bowe destroyed him.
Forget the really good quality of the video in general. Im subscribing just because you used shadow of war music. Great stuff man i enjoyed watching that 👍
Who did he fight though? Very much a padded record for me. Never fought Tyson, Lewis, McCall, either Klitschko, Morrison, Ruddock, Tua, Akinwande, Ibeabuchi, Buster Douglas. He beat holyfield two times and lost once and that's great of course but he dodged way too much. He really didn't beat many top guys. No doubt he was fearsome but sorry I can't have him at all. Bit too scared in my opinion.
Back in the 90s every tall heavyweight was hyped to be the next great heavyweight, Gonzalez, McCline, Grant and they all turned out to be average contenders. Gonzalez thought Bowe was the same guy he fought in the amateurs
