Lol I have two. California makes it expensive for the meager wage earner... So sad for Americans we have this human plague humans in politics. Second amendment suppose to be free .. However put inflation taxes and permits certifications on each gun I want to buy... Crazy thing he re CA. Gov banned rifles guns that were fine the year before. Been inspected by gun inspector then get another inspector says it's wrong.
My dad had the same "one shot - one kill" rule. No wasting ammo. When we would go hunting he would give us 25 shells each. When we returned from the hunt he would give us one new shell for each kill. When we wasted enough shots that we didn't have any more ammo we would have to earn a new box by doing extra chores. Enjoy your videos. I recently picked up an SR22. I really like it. I've put about 500 rounds thru it with no FTE or FTF. So far it eats everything I feed it.
I have a heritage arms 22LR with the Magnum cylinder and have well over 2,000 rounds of LR Mini mags and about 500 rounds of 22 magnum through it and it is as tight and still feels like a brand new gun. These are just a very good gun if you are on a budget or not.
Great video as always! I have a few of those pistols that you mentioned. Ruger MK1, Ruger MK2, Ruger single 6, Heritage Rough Rider (I love it) Walther P22, Beretta Neo, Smith 422... I love them all...Thank you... Keep up the great work please! Have a good day! :)
Just so you will know... I eat the squirrels I shoot or give them to someone who WILL eat them. I have never or will never kill something just to kill it. That's just wrong and unethical.
Great advice making every shot count! I have a Mk3 22/45 and spent more money on aftermarket parts than on shooting it. Kind of like putting the cart before the horse.
i love the 22 caliber bullet. i hate how disrespected it is. even the word "plinking" is almost always used when talking about the 22. its used in a "i dont take this round seriously and only consider it for fun and games." i looked around to find any other caliber that people say is "good for plinking" and found none. not even for the 380. i hear people say really stupid shit about the 22 like "it will sting, but not kill" or "has no stopping power". that shit is so ridiculous. lots of people have been killed with 22lr. and not because you had a perfect shot or put 50 rounds in them. it only takes a couple. you take 1 to the chest, youre gonna die just as dead as with any other bullet. if you dont respect the 22 as a lethal round and any gun its fired from as a deadly weapon, then you just dont respect guns period.
Exactly! Also, I once met a bloke at a gun shop saying the .380 is a plinking calibre as well. The guy didn't know much on the topic the more we talked about guns. It seemed he was just plain stupid.
boomzilla86 the Israeli military use a version of the 10/22 as a sniper weapon. Some say "I wouldn't grab a 22lr to defend myself or my family" which is total bullshit. me myself, I know I'm damn near surgical with my 10 22, squirrel heads feel the wrath all the time then they try to eat the fruits, vegtables, and pecans on my farm
I have never considered the .22 to be disrespected. Quite the opposite. Some of the most expensive and most precision guns I own are .22s. I do not consider them an effective defensive cartridge.
This video in my view a nice and clean one! It's very different from those hidden (and not so much so) product placements which have filled the gun channels these days. I think this video is done by a true enthusiast, not by one more salesman out of countless number of them found here on RU-vid. And, if I may: don't skip show notes! Lots of newbies are watching these videos and it's hard for them to catch all the brands and names by ear! Cheers!
You mention you can get after market stuff for the Browning Buckmarks, well the same can be said for the Ruger mark iii or ii's. I Have a Ruger Mark iii Target and I have ended up replacing the trigger with a Volquartsen trigger kit, Volquartsen extractor and a Tactical Solutions upper with hogue aluminium grips and it looks nothing like a standard one now. I call it my lego gun, because you can just keep adding or swapping stuff to it. Gotta love Ruger and Tactical Solutions!
I always recommend a single six to people curious about getting into plinking. If you can sit all day a plink with something like a heritage rough rider then you will have an even better time with a semi auto. I like steering the towards a rough rider or ruger wrangler. They taught me that patience equals fun. Having only six slow shots made me concentrate on making each shot count.
The single most reliable .22 I owned, other then a gun failure itself, was also the cheapest. The Phoenix. Never failed to ignite. Never failed to extract. And never failed to eject. The firing pin would fall out. Big problem and a stupid problem. Plus the magazine was hell to load. The most accurate .22 I owned was an expensive Hammerli Trail side. A red dot sight from bench rest would do eight inches at one hundred yards. However, it had polymer magazines that deformed over time and led to bad feeds. I did steel plate matches in cold weather and almost every single .22 autoloader on the line jammed from time to time. I did not use the Phoenix, I used a light weight S&W that did not jam that day but jammed every other time I shot it. I do not know which .22 will shoot first time every time. That cold day had lots of Rugers and most if not all of them jammed on that cold day. But I suspect they are the best overall. My Hamerli potentially is the best if I can keep the magazine properly sized with spring compression devices. All .22 are recoil operated and so I suspect the heavier bullets will be most reliable.
I'll also put in a plug for the Heritage Rough Rider. I got it as kind of an everyday gun. Its actually one of my favorites to shoot. One of the best parts about it is that for $180 you don't have to worry if it gets wet or if you scuff it. ...and its just fun to plink away with a single action revolver.
8:40 - some of the best sound advice: quality shooting. I think this is very important. At the range I see some people peppering the targets with lead but fail to make proper groupings or marked improvements. Waste of ammo indeed. I bet if 22plinkster was to go squirrel hunting today and we gave him 10 rounds, he'd be able to get 20 squirrels dead!! Thanks for the videos, we enjoy very much! Happy plinking & stay safe.
Thank god, a man who specializes in 22, now as a lad growing up in New Zealand at the time it was a cash strapped country due to poor political direction, I grew up in country, we had wonderful dark soil but meat was hard to come by, it was nothing for my dad to wake me at 5 am I had a 22 rifle & he had a 4-10 shotgun & this is how we put meat on the table. my dad was a policeman so god help you if you handled the weapon wrong & he told me that one shot does the trick if you shoot right, don't waste ammo & make sure you clean kill that animal each time no suffering ( he was a dog handler ) so I hope you can shear my points on 22 , yes it will kill almost anything if used correctly, but here is my question, in terms of high impact kill there seem to be a move away form 22 hornets or magnums, why is this so or is it just me.. it has been a lot of years since I went hunting but there is not much mention of the type of ammo anymore, ?????
I've shot a lot of .22 handguns. I just bought the new Taurus TX-22. Wow! It's amazing!!!! The trigger reset is crazy good, and it's been 100% reliable thru 550 rounds of 36g. Federal bulk, and 100 rounds of 36g. Mini Mags. It's my favorite .22 handgun that I've ever shot. Mine is dead on. I saw where you had one that was shooting high, I think.
@@adrianakuzmikova1697 YES! practicing on a .22 handgun will help you get better with the larger handguns because you learn not to flinch over anticipated recoil. plus, you can shoot a thousand times for $40 with a .22. A thousand rounds of .45 will cost you a hell of a lot more. lastly, you can get a LOT more gun for the price when buying a .22. You can get a pretty high end .22 for $1,000 but that same $1,000 will get you a mid level 1911.
I love all youtubers they are so casual about there guns he's like oh I'm not really a revolver guy I don't have many of em probably like 10 or 15 of em. Really if that's not many than how many is a lot lol
ALL of them would be a lot. Don't make me count mine. When I met my wife, some years ago when my collection was smaller, she said HOW MANY GUNS DO YOU HAVE???? "About 80 or so" OMG! How many do you think you need? "All of them."
lol My Grandfather taught my Dad like that, and he taught me like that, and I've taught my son like that. 6 bullets = 6 squirrels. lol I think it's a country boy thing lol.
Nice collection plinkster. I was just out trolling around for rimfire videos. Just ordered a Browning 1911-22 A1, should be here wednesday, pretty stoked!
How do you feel about the buckmark as a target pistol? I find mine to be extremely crisp and accurate. My 2 browning guns have set the bar high for any future guns I purchase.
Thanks,I enjoyed your video and agree 100 %.Ive owned or shot just about all these and more.I enjoyed hearing about your Dads training and how he passed it on to you.Semper Fi.
@@showcasecharlie11 the guy in this video looks like he is in his 30's. Several of his guns are valued at over $1,000. He probably has well over 100 guns. Most average guns are in the $300 to $600 range. So lets just be conservative and say he has $25k to $40k in guns in his 30's. Now, that is what a new car costs, so it is not impossible, I am just wondering how he and so many others are spending this much on their hobby. I'm not hating, just curious what they are neglecting to afford them.
@@showcasecharlie11 so how much would you say you have spent in guns over all? If you have $40k in guns and you are around 35 years old. Lets assume you started making money at 20 ish when you got out of college. So $40K divided by 15 years means that you are spending over $2,600 a year on average. This does not even address ammunition costs, range fees, accessories, storage, cleaning supplies, etc. Unless you are making over $100k a year, that is a significant chunk of your annual budget. I'm making close to $70k a year and I cant justify spending that much on my hobby (as much as I would LOVE to). Do you guys just let your kids go without braces and sports gear? hahaha just kidding on the last part.
First time I went with my dad to the range, and first time shooting a gun at all I shot the SR22 and was impressed, accurate gun the sights lined up perfectly and caught my eyes immediately. Only had one malfunction but it was because of the ammunition gun's kinda picky with ammunition, but over-all its an awesome training gun and its also a very fist time shooter friendly gun
lol My Grandfather taught my Dad like that, and he taught me like that, and I've taught my son like that. 6 bullets = 6 squirrels. lol I think it's a country boy thing lol.
I have converted several ruger mark ? Owners to browning buckmarks. We will be out shooting and ill hand them my buckmark. After they shoot mine they say" man i wish i had shot this before i bought mine. You want to trade ". Im not sure what model it is. It has an adjustable trigger, long heavy fluted barrel, target sights with fiber optic front sight. I put a base and ultradot red dot sight on it. It will shoot is good as whoever is shooting it. I also have a plain buckmark with a satin silver finish, heavy slab sided barrel and laminated gray grips. Its a tackdriver too. The only ruger I own in 22 cal is a single six. I bought it 33 years ago. Its a fine pistol also. The buckmark pistols are getting overpriced imo. They have doubled in price over the last 10+ years. I gave $ 169 for my first one. The newer ones have plastic firing pin assemblies . But they're still nice 22s.
Strange, over here a Buckmark is less than half a Beretta 87, and I live in Italy... So you are a fellow target shooter AND hunter:)! How nice... I hunt with military surplus guns though, I'm a collectionist. As for the laws, we have no real restrictions here as well, just registration and background check are needed
First of all I like your lovely words to your old man, you're lucky to have him with you (I miss my old man, as yours dad, mine was a former military man, God bless he) Ok, about this video thanks a lot for your orientation in terms of these cathegories, just a couple of days I wondering what .22lr pistol is better for my. I think in a training pistol because I want prepare my self to pistols in 9mm or .45 who are more adecuate for defence. Great work man!!
This was an excellent video. Very good info. You seem very humble and down to earth. This world needs more of that. The other videos on your channel are great too. I subscribed!!
I have tried several revovers and pistols in .22lr, but wasnt that good with it, mainly because I have big hands, and then there was the buckmark and that one fitted nice in my big hands en the groups improved dramaticly, so while others shoot great with different brands it didnt work when I shot them because of different size hands.
Great informative video. I also have a few 22s but best one is Ruger mk3 Hunter with red dot . With cci standard its an absolute tack driver. Shoot silouettes to 100 mtrs no prob. Highly reccomend
Cool vid , nice collection. I just got a Buckmark for my first 22 pistol and can't wait to shoot it. I plan to teach my son how to be a better pistol shooter with it vs. the 9mm or 45, get the basics first.
The ruger single six 22lr is also good for another reason: you can get an additional cylinder chambered in 22 magnum and just swap it in (just takes a few seconds) and you'll have a 22 magnum revolver.
Yep, I've had 2, 1 blued and one stainless 5.5", still have the stainless. They both came with as convertibles. It's my favorite gun period. The variety of ammo you can shoot from these things just makes them so versatile.
I like the S&W k 22 masterpiece a friend gave me a very nice early50s gun. I have seen them in the S&W catalogue in stainless. I think that is a great gun that you will have in the family forever. A little more money than some options but a great gun. Thanks for your video
I agree! I bought a model 17-4 k22 and I could not believe how smooth and accurate it is! It is so easy to shoot and feels so good ergonomically. I have a colt woodsman that I love but find myself shooting the model 17 more just because I am so much more accurate with it. single action on it is so light that I barely put pressure on that trigger before it breaks.
sure did have a r-101 Hi STandard and the accuracy is decent. But love the revolver style and it's great when in woods ginsengin or out an about in the deep mountains
I recently purchased a Browning Buck Mark and really liked it. I didn't even consider a Ruger because I'm still mad that Bill Ruger advocated for a 5 round magazine limit for all civilians back in the early 1990s and that's what resulted in the 1994 assault weapons ban with the 10-round limit we all had to live with for 10 years. I know Bill Ruger is dead and the company is under new management but I hold a grudge for a long time. No firearms manufacturer should be advocating for gun control.
i saved up $450 for a ruger 10/22 22 inch heavy barrel, and I bought it on my 12 birthday and love it! it is really fun to shoot and really accurate. I hit a ground squirrel in the head from 200 yards out and I am not an amazing shooter.
What did you do, kill it with a shotgun then back up 200 yards, crank up the magnification on your 4-12x scope, and then spend all afternoon shooting mag after mag until you gave up, walked up to the squirrel, checked to make sure no-one was watching, and then shot it in the head point blank
Found your channel thanks to Hickok45 who likes everyone of your videos. I'm a young guy, so I'm on a budget, but until now I've never considered practicing with .22 pistols. As soon as that tax money rolls around I'll be picking up one.
yeah i agree im trying to get a ruger 1022. thing is an american beauty. i should upload the video of my girl shooting a glock 17 for the first time. she first one shot and was like "ooh yeah is that a standard gun?" i was just standing there like haha i should have started you on a 22.
I have the Sport King with the longer barrel. That sucker is dead accurate. I'm glad that you mentioned the Sport King in this video. As always, I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.
+the7thson1962 I have the Sport King with the 6 3/4" barrel. A friend of mine gave it to me, as his son had left it in the woods, and it looked like it was a total loss. I disassembled it, and cleaned the rust off with steel wool and WD40. It was a little tricky putting it back together, but, there are diagrams of the inner workings on the net. It shoots beautifully. Outside of my Ruger service six, .357, it is my favorite pistol. Enjoy!
-- Just getting into this, but I have learned other skills, and I believe that your advice about taking your time to do it right is the best way to learn. Speed will come later, almost automatically. Almost-- one can also get into some bad habits of slowness, but if one is motivated, it's easier to learn how to do something with precision first, and then focus on doing it a little faster. There's an equivalent of the spray-and-pray approach in the construction business, and the results are rarely pretty. I think impatience is a more universal motivator than precision, and that in most cases, getting the precision thing down first will flow easily into impatience, but the reverse is less reliable. In construction, I have seen very few guys who went from fast-and-sloppy to fast-and precise, but lots of guys who went from slow-and-precise to fast-and-precise.
2 things. first, an adult squirrel can easily weigh 2 pounds. after cleaning it, there should be at least a half pound of edable meat. combine that with some sort of bread and vegetable and you have a nice meal for 2 or a sizable meal for 1. if you need 3 squirrels to be full, stop taking gut shots with .17HMR. second, do you eat sea food? if so, chances are you have eaten at least 2 animals in a single meal. i know i have eaten 30 shrimps in a single sitting.
Good advice. As an NRA Basic Pistol Insstructor, my consistent advice to students is to pick up a .22 pistol and learn the proper mechanics of pistol shooting. I love picking up my Ruger Single Six or Browning 1911-22 and working on technique while having fun. At 8-10 cents per round, you don't have to feel as though you are depleting your bank account, and there is a wide range of .22 pistols to play with. Thanks for sharing your experience!
save your money & buy a Ruger MK III or the new Ruger iv.. you won't be disappointed.. they are only the best semi auto 22's on the planet & they are super accurate..
Definitely not on the planet! But they are the best production 22lr that's commonly found in US gun stores under a grand. Browning buckmarks are really nice but I still prefer the Ruger...even over the berettas and nice s&ws
I really like your site. I watch it often. When are you going to offer "22plinkster" shirts!!! I would buy a couple of them. I sure others would too. keep up the good work. USMC hoorah!!
