First, it was veneer techs; now, it's when cheap braces go wrong! You know I love to take a good trip down a rabbit hole, and this one took me to DIY Dentistry on TikTok. It's alarming to see how this trend has gained traction, with numerous videos and tutorials encouraging people to try out dental procedures at home.
Basement braces have become popular, as have fashion braces. While cheap braces have been around for the last decade, in recent years, fashion braces have hit TikTok.
A simple RU-vid search for how to do cheap braces revealed tutorials for doing them from the comfort of your own home. Braces are a serious procedure that should only be done by dentists.
However, in our climate, it makes sense that people are trying to do their own braces at home to save money. Tune in as we discuss when cheap braces go wrong.
I take a deep dive into what happened in the case of one young man who did his own braces at home using tweezers and super glue. The impact of these cheap braces was devastating, causing his teeth to become painfully sensitive, a condition that persists even after he removed the braces.
Another young woman lost two teeth due to fake braces or cheap braces or DIY braces, and the damage was irreversible.

I paid over $6,000 for braces (had a very large gap to close) wore them 3 years and just got them off 2 days ago. I hated them. But my teeth look so good 😭

Hi Dental assistant here studying to be a dental hygienist and I have seen some cases of basement braces and some of the effects I've seen from them are not great. for starters for instance, in some cases, the materials are hazardous to your health and can damage your teeth. Elastic bands used in DIY braces sometimes come loose or become attached beneath the gums, which causes dental concerns. Bite inconsistencies or jaw issues, cavities sometimes extensive, damage to the gums, gum disease, infections and abscesses, root shortening (resorption), and in some cases actual tooth loss among some other negative concerns. The braces applied are NOT one size fits all like some may advertise. In office we make either impressions or scan your jaw/teeth to better frame your specific mouth (remember everyones mouths are different) and create a treatment from there on to get the correct aligners and the necessary means to create your braces for you. Some people may have extensive overbites, cross bites and or crowding that needs headgear and possibly surgery. These basement braces and even the veneers I've seen are very unsafe and most of the time unhygienic, please do not go to someone unlicensed, no matter how cheap they may be please!

Reading thru your comment all I heard was “DONT DO THIS IF U AINT GOT REAL MONEY TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEMS CAUSED LATER!” Bc whoa! These folks definitely not going in and doing any sort of x-rays to figure out how to make the braces unique to the individuals bone and teeth structure. And the whole impressions part?! As you saw, ain’t nobody doing none of that unless they’re trying to fit themselves for a mouthguard. I didn’t even think about the fact that they might need some sort of aligners, as opposed to just the normal braces. See?! This is so unsafe! I ain’t no dental nothing, but what you said was a mouthful!

This is crazy, if braces aren't put on correctly your jaw can be damaged and cause lots of pain. Some things shouldn't be cheap.

Aren't regular braces for vanity? You getting them to make your teeth look nice, unless it's a health issue or your teeth are causing you pain from being crooked it's considered cosmetic reasons for getting braces.

so...... do people realize that orthodontists are the best people to go for braces? Dentists don't go through as much training as orthos. (Not even mentioning those 'techs'). If the teeth move the wrong way, or the bite is messed up, those will fall right the hell out. And if there's bone loss, then not even implants can fix that. Edit:I'm not part of the dental profession, but I do consume content from the Bentist, who is a licensed orthodontist in Texas. Braces information is pretty easy to find

The lady that did the night guard at Home is good.. home kits are actually sold legitimately they send you the kit to take your impressions you send them back to the lab and they make the guard for you for 150.. who in the world is gonna pay these people 500 for a guard...

17:34 has an open bite. My son has the same issue. The only way to correct it, is with jaw surgery. Braces definitely didnt help my son, he still wears it and sees a professional orthodontist.

@Heyu7her3 yea, we tried that for a yr. I didn't want to go the jaw surgery route and opt with the braces. Try a less invasive treatment since he was only 13, but the bite never closed. They definitely made his teeth straight, but the rubber band didn't do anything. But now that he's 16 we have to do the jaw surgery.

I understand the pain of paying too much for dental care. I just had to pay so much money for a mouth guard because grinding damage was found during my last regular visit. The pain relief was immediate the first night I wore it. The mysterious pain of the last few years is no longer a mystery. I have no idea what that "we have a dentist at home" ladies mouth guard was made out of. The material mine is made of is super thick. There is no way it would break several times in a year. Even my retainers didn't break more than once a year.

This is incredibly strange to me not only because of the amount of people who are willing to threaten their dental hygiene for cheaper prices or some sort of aesthetic. But also because even only as somebody who has had braces the back brackets that wrap around the farthest molars on either side, how are they recreating that? From what I understand, that's like a key point in the movement of the teeth...

the first sign that this person doesnt have a clue of what theyre doing is the powerchain when there are zero gaps (thats the point of it). Also rubberbands are how you correct the bite, not a power chain. If you actually look at the first womans teeth they are aligned but not in the correct direction

The night guard lady is fine. But honestly an easier and cheaper way is to buy those cheap mouth guards from the drug store and just take a little more effort to shape them to your teeth and cut off the extra so it’s not so bulky. That’s what I did and it looks like one you would buy from the dentist but only cost like $20

This is insane. I am not a dentist but her teeth looked good to begin with. Hopefully everything is good and no one is hurt. Also cheap jewelry often has lead and cadmium in it which is pretty poisonous. I still wear cheap stuff, but throw it out when its worn through, chips, or changes color. I would never put that in my mouth. and im not a dentist, but i am a chemist so i have a pretty good idea about this stuff.

The gaps in your mouth are cause when you have more space in your mouth. So you could have the normal 32 teeth or 28 if you remove your wisdom teeth. And if your jaw is too big it will cause gaps. Same with overcrowding, your jaw is too small for the smooth of teeth you have

I paid for braces out-of-pocket using graduate work study as my *only* income. And my orthodontist was a trained architect & engineer prior to. *This is effin' ridiculous. If you can go to another country for braces, you can afford them here.*

I chipped my front tooth and it was really sharp and catching my tongue. I didn't have dental insurance or anything at the time and I was really young and dumb so I took a metal nail file to my actual tooth... It did work though.

I don't think a lot of these young people realize just how serious it can be. I know when I wasin my late teens/early 20s, I didn't understand how serious a lot of things were. The pre frontal portex(decision making part of the brain) doesn't finish developing until 25-27. Not saying that this id a good decision, but without guidance, a lot of young people just don't understand the long term consequences.

These basement braces placers really think you just slap on those brackets and bands and they just do the work themselves 😅 These poor victims are going to need MAJOR help to correct the damage to their teeth in the future and may even lose their teeth.
