When China Failed to Conquer Taiwan: the Battle for Kinmen Island

The Battle for Kinmen Island
The Chinese Civil War went very well for the Chinese Communist Party in 1949 and the Nationalists were on the run. After another devastating loss at the city of Xiamen, Chiang Kai-Shek and his Nationalist forces retreated to the island of Taiwan. But the People’s Liberation Army looked unstoppable and Taiwan’s fall seemed inevitable.
The Battle of Kinmen, also known as the Battle of Guningtou, ended those expectations. A combination of too much hubris and too little information conspired to inflict upon the Communist Party its most devastating defeat of the war and set the foundation for the split between China and Taiwan today.

PLA suffered from what the Japanese called 'Victory Disease'. Thought they could win any battle just because they had won so many previously. They weren't the first, and certainly not the last, to learn this unpleasant lesson.

Kevin Shannon a modern conflict, without the US, would see a fight even more one-sided than the Gulf War. The ROC armed forces is technologically backward and has no actually counters against the PLA.

Great info. I didn't know about Kinmen. It's amazing that Taiwan still controls this little island right off of mainland China. Talk about a rock in one's shoe.
@Asianometry
@Asianometry 6 лет назад
During one of the Taiwan Strait Crises (I don’t recall which), Chiang Kai-Shek was driven to a point where he threatened Mao with abandoning Kinmen. Ironically, this caused Mao to stop shelling the island. The intention however was clear - the ROC claim to the islands validates a belief that there should be one China. Giving up the islands means Taiwan governs just its own main island and splits “China” into two. Mao understood this and dialed down the tension.

Former Japanese officers, including Lieutenant General Nemoto, gave instructions to Taiwan over operations. General Nemoto had an old favor in Chiang Kai-shek, so she smuggled from Japan and participated in this battle. The defense of the islands by underground buns plagued American troops at Peleliu and Iwo Jima.The strategy to destroy the troops that deliberately landed repelled PLA.
@YellowFat

No Japanese ever participated in the battles ,former Japanese officers only gave some ideas about how the defense should be organized. It was the ROC/Nationalist soldiers fought against Communists face to face and defeated the enemy in the end.
@jasonleetaiwan
@jasonleetaiwan 6 лет назад
It would be nice if you could refer to the CCP as the CCP and not "China". Since you actually visited Jinmen, you should have noticed that all soldiers buried there through the 1950's were from provinces in mainland China. There were no soldiers from Taiwan serving in Jinmen at that time, so how could the national flag and armed forces be referred to as just Taiwan? They were ROC troops defending what was left of the ROC. That's all it was. Just because the central government was in Taipei, does not mean the ROC ceased to exist.

Jason Lee Well, just for this instance. My Taiwanese grandfather served as artillery officer in Kinmen (second strait crisis '58)
@dasbubba841
@dasbubba841 6 лет назад
The ROC didn't cease to exist, but they lost control of the mainland, and thus the legitimacy to call themselves "China". Thus, going by that logic, the ROC lost the title of "China" and became a mere separatist group resisting the "legitimate" government in Beijing. However, the CCP couldn't finish off the ROC and eventually the Americans came to guard them. Thus, we have this odd status quo. Neither can make a move on the other one.
@benthekeeshond545
@benthekeeshond545 6 лет назад
DasBubba, I strongly and firmly disagree with you. Mr. Jason Lee has the correct political view of China. The Nationalist Government of China is a political party/entity of China. The CCP, similar to the Nationalist Government, is also a political party of China, not China itself. The Chinese Government forces were defending Kinmen from CCP bandits.
@dasbubba841
@dasbubba841 6 лет назад
Yes, the Nationalists at the time, were the legal government of China, the whole of China. However, they lost the civil war. They didn't totally lose, since they still survive on Taiwan, but they lost control of the mainland. Thus, the CCP has become the legal government of Mainland China. The ROC lost control through internal war, and thus the CCP has "earned" the right or mandate to rule China. However, they never finished the job. They couldn't conquer Taiwan through war, so they have no right over it. They have no right to prevent Taiwan from become it's own country since the war is over. Taiwan and China are two different countries. Bottom line, the ROC has no right to claim all of China since it lost it through war, and the PRC has no right to claim Taiwan and prevent it from being a country on the international stage since it failed to conquer it.

Defense of Taiwan is one of the main reasons that the United States have kept a fleet in the South China Sea. We committed to defend the nation from China and President Trump is probably going to do something no other modern president would do and that is sell the Taiwanese the aircraft they want to defend their nation.

F K Did you watch the video? Taiwan is a seperate nation. The civil war ended years ago with the nationalist holding Formosa and a few islands on the Chinese coast. They have different names, different flags, different governments, and different friends. Holding on to that "one China" policy is nonsense.

The reason US did not help ROC to take back China from PRC because the corruption from ROC is too much for US foreign aid. In the second chinese civil war, ROC officiaks used US foreign aid to buy Mansions instead of buying anything necessary for the war, even when they are actually losing the war.

The USA should never do that! The technology of the F-35 cost a lot of money, and the US can not risk unanticipated geopolitical changes allowing mainland China to seize Taiwan, much as it did when NATO seized resources and Soviet technology in eastern Europe almost for free. It is much more compelling for the USA to protect Taiwan with its own F-35s.

I had the opportunity to speak with Mao Lina (Mao's daughter) at a Nixon anniversary in China. Mao and Chiang actually communicated a lot and agreed to keep the island in Taiwan's control in the event Taiwan wanted to join back with China. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but at the time maybe things were different to how they are now.

Can you do a video on the Marshal intervention after the battle of Siping in May 1946? It would be good to see the analysis of what may have happened if Marshal did not intervene. Perhaps the Soviets would have gotten involved if the Nationalists would have been allowed to drive the CCP out of Manchuria. I think it's important to point out that the original PLA troops were not well equipped enough to beat the Nationalists, but when about 1 million Nationalists troops defected after elections were held in 1948 and 1947, the PLA became well equipped and strong and became an army of 2.2 million troops. The worst defeat by the PLA was in Siping in 1946 when Sun I-Jen defeated Lin Biao. Of course Zhou Enlai and the CCP deleted this battle from history as it discredited the CCP. The Marshall intervention gave the CCP time to regroup after Siping.

Mao would have done well to brush up on a bit of military history before launching his attack on Kinmen. Had he been better versed with the Battle of Red Cliff (fought in 208 AD), he would have appreciated that one cannot turn a peasant army, accustomed to fighting on land, into a marine corp overnight. Like Cao Cao before him, Mao's generals did not know the terrain, they did not know the enemy, and worst of all they did not know themselves. Not too late for the commies to dust off a copy of Sunzi's treatise before chucking their weight around in the South China Sea.
