In this video, I talk about the various ways classic film actors guest starred on sitcoms: how the shows used their personas, how fame is used as a plot device, and how they represent nostalgia.
If you’re interested in some of the shows I talk about, here’s where they’re streaming:
Here’s Lucy - Amazon Prime
The Nanny - HBO Max, Tubi
A Different World - Amazon Prime
I Love Lucy - Paramount+
The Golden Girls - Hulu
Friends - HBO Max

@@stevennieves3327 It's actually kind of incredible she got nominated, the 1990's were a hugely competitive time for the Emmy's and in particular the Comedy categories. She had to compete against some heavyweights like Helen Hunt, Candice Bergin, Calista Flockhart, The Cast of Friends, Jenna Elfman, Ellen DeGeneres, Patricia Richardson, Roseanne, Cybill Shepherd and many others who were all vying for nominations. 1996 and 1997 ended up being part of Helen Hunt's four year streak, In fact between only five ladies actually won the Lead Actress award, Candice Bergen won five times (1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995), Kristie Alley once (1991), Roseanne once (1993), Helen Hunt four times (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999), and Patricia Heaton twice (2000 and 2001).

I didn’t recognize the impact those legends had on American film as I watched them on the Love Boat. When I see it now, I cherish the show and all the actors. It was a chance for a lot old school actors to shine before a new audience. I've been watching Love Boat again on Pluto TV. I find that what is good is still very good but what is cringe is very cringe. Usually I find the cringe often involves fantasy segments. The worst being the Samurai dream sequence when they are in Japan. On the other hand I am frequently surprised at how melancholy some of the more dramatic parts were. Not all endings were happy.

The Nostalgia factor was so present for me in Ray Booger’s appearance on the Partridge Family as Shirley’s dad. He keeps trying to be “hip” and “young” by wedging himself into the band and feverishly adopting their brand of music, , but truly shines when he allows himself to embrace his actual age and sing a song his wife loved back when they were young. As a child mother always pointed out TV stars who were Hollywood movies stars: the mother on the Munsters, the grandmother on Bewitched, the mother on The Big Valley, Phoebe on All My Children, etc, etc. Then we'd watch movies with them in their Hollywood prime. We kids couldn't believe they were the same people. For me the fact that Endora on Bewitched was the mother of Charles Foster Kane was mind blowing! What a fantastically wonderful essay subject! And of course you knocked it out of the park! Didn't realize how early nor how entrenched old Hollywood was in television. Thank you for the nod to Lena Horne especially on Sanford and Son/A Different World. Fun fact: In addition to fostering collective memory, "Samford and Son" also unearthed those memory forgot. Matthew "Stymie" Beard (of the Little Rascals) played one of Fred's good friends and word on the street was Redd knew Stymie from way back and when he learned of the hard times he'd fallen on he asked him to be on the show. This channel is AMAZING! You're one of the most consistent, accurate, interesting and passionate creators on this platform!

One of the things I appreciate SO MUCH with your videos is the way ou reference your sources. It is not just an honest way to highlight great research, often by women, but also a wonderful way to let me find books if I want to explore more. You are definitely one of the top quality creators here.

What a great video! As a kid I loved seeing classic stars on “I Love Lucy” and still remember the insane anticipation I experienced waiting for the Dick and Liz episode of “Here’s Lucy” to air. That ring! The tans! Liz’ pantsuit! It did not disappoint. Thanks for highlighting this aspect of the entertainment industry.

I love Sal Mineo's appearance on The Patty Duke show. Though it has all of the cheesy sweetness of a sitcom from that era it does include a scene which is quite candid about the difficulties of fame

Lucy on the developing 1950s television - like Chopin and the fast-evolving 1820-30s piano - made an ideal match of trailblazing technology with erupting talent, creative medium with creative spark.

I got so excited at the mention of Patty Duke and the Patty Duke show, I started singing the theme song about a beat before it was clipped in- truly tragic that that cameo didn't happen while I was suffering through a babysitting gig with kids obsessed with Liv & Maddie. Sunday morning syndicated TV is still weird, at least around here!

I just can't say it enough, but man oh man, thank you for being so incredibly intelligent and for doing so much research! It's such a pleasure to sit back and be entertained and be taken on a fact-filled educational journey of subtleties and not-so-subtleties and connected dots that have me nodding my head and going yup, yup, yup, oh, of course! Ah, yes...

So many Hollywood Stars were on one of the Lucy Shows, I forgot to mention Sammy Davis Jr. I believe they were friends too. He was a wonderful actor, singer, dancer all around star. Also on The Lucy Show - Lucy tries to teach Ethel Merman to sing - hilarious. Tennesee Ernie Ford appeared on I Love Lucy in two sequential episodes - it made his name and forever after he was a star!

My favorite golden era star who became a regular on a sitcom would have to be Nancy Walker on Rhoda. I felt after she left the show was not the same without her presence. Other regulars I could thing of were Nanette Fabray on One Day at a Time and Celeste Holm in Archie Bunkers Place. Some of the more memorable guest appearances I can think of are Alexis Smith on Cheers, Ann Miller on Home Improvement and Eva Marie Saint on Frasier.

Great overview. Murder she wrote is also a good opportunity to see movie and TV performers in a different setting. Though former stars play a character vs themselves the chance to experience them post prime and still contributing to the profession is heartwarming and I really enjoy it. You observations are spot on and thoughtful. Thank you for sharing them. Robert Best

I love the nanny I've probably watched the series ten times because I love it so much. For the longest time I actually thought that Fran Drescher sounded like she did when she played Fran Fine, it took about six months of hearing her actually talk to convince me that she was just an amazing and hilarious actress and not the nasialy amazing actress that I thought she was. And then there's cici and niles and their budding romance that when I first saw it I knew that it was going to be interesting. Fran deserved more credit then she gets for that role. You can't think of her without thinking of The Nanny.

Also how in almost every Frasier episode there was a celebrity doing a cameo as one of the callers to Frasier' radio show, and you wouldn't even know it unless you were very familiar with their voice.
