When in history did the celebration of Advent begin in Christian churches? This short explanation tells how Advent arose around Christmas in the 4th century, and how Advent in history is different than Advent today.

I recently stumbled upon this channel and these kinds of lectures are exactly what I was looking for. So, needless to say, I have been binge watching, even before bedtime. It certainly helps when the voice of the lecturer is easy to listen to listen to! Finally something I will subscribe to!

Not yet. But I will be making one once we get closer to Christmas. As early as next week, if I can get the rest of my backlogged made! :)

But does God ask us to mark Advent, or Easter, or Christmas?

Thank you, Dr.. Reeves. I enjoy listening to all your lectures. What a rich Christian heritage we have. This video was especially timely for me as this is my first Christmas observing Advent!

Dr. Reeves, have you made a video explaining the Trinity? I believe in the Trinity on the basis of trust, but most explanations sound so opaque to me. It's like the church fathers carefully chose words to describe the Godhead that only have meaning within the explanation. If I try to understand the words by talking through the concepts, I find I'm either drifting into modalism in a kind of unitarianism or end up with a three God pantheon. Help! (Sorry, to stray off Advent, but I wanted to ask.)

1:29-1:33 Regarding your point about the December Solstice "being somewhat of a holiday in the Roman world": my English teacher asserted that the Christmas tree has its origins as a phallic symbol of a decadent Rome, in which Romans would dance around and have orgies. Is that true?
@RyanReevesM
@RyanReevesM 7 лет назад
No. For one, English teachers should probably not be a resource for history. :) These types of 'origin stories' are mentioned often, but the truth is we are unsure where the tree comes from specifically, but it's not a part of Roman culture, at least. The earliest dating we have of it specifically being part of Christmas tradition is the 16th century, and then mostly by Protestants. We are not sure if this is a riff on earlier traditions or a brand new thing. But in either case, it arises at a time when all of Europe is Christian.

Dr. Reeves, spelling at Priscillianism for "physical." Reserving judgement on "it only made sense." It really didn't make sense unless an apostate church was already departing from Scripture--but you and I have already been around that turn. :)
