When Did Nadal Start Wishing For 2 Clay Slams?

Why are Nadal, his Uncle, and his fans whining about more clay tournaments? Was clay always Nadal's favorite surface? Or did he start complaining about fast courts later in his career?

My first time playing on clay was at a tennis camp when I was 13; it completely nullified my game and I hated it more than anything. I lost to players I would easily beat on hard courts, and those players somehow had the audacity to tell me that they were better than me because they beat me on clay and we barely played on that surface. But the reality is that 70 percent of tennis is played on hard courts (probably even more at amateur level), so being good on hard courts is more valuable than being good on clay. I told the other kids to shut up and deal with the fact that most of tennis is on hard courts, and they are nothing but cockroaches to me on that surface.

The best player is the guy that adapts to the conditions the best. All three members of the big three knew fully well that the tour consisted of 1 grass and clay slam and 2 hard when they began their careers. The player who figured out a strategy to perform the best under these circumstances was always going to be the best player. Everyone of the big three had an equal opportunity to adapt their game to the modern structure of tennis; djokovic was the best at this, as simple as that. One cannot claim with a straight face that the composition is unfair when all three players had an equal opportunity to develop their games to match this composition. The rules of the game were set long before any of them became pros.

Even in the period of 1975-1977 when there were 2 clay Slams, the US Open was played on green clay, a surface less slippery than red clay and with a bit more comfortable bounce. Nadal's record on that green clay wouldn't even be close to his one on red clay - he could barely win 1 match on non-red clay at the 2012 Madrid masters. History also proves so - Borg won the French Open 6 times but didn't win the US Open even once, despite being capable of winning Slams on red clay and grass between 1975-1977. As someone who lost to exactly 1 player in his career at the French Open, he should have dominated the green clay as well if it was played similar to red clay. The green clay is still in use for one of the WTA 500 tournaments in Charleston. Unlike the blue clay it turns to be safe and comfortable one. I think it would be a good idea to turn one of the 3 red clay Masters into a green clay Masters (maybe Madrid masters) and turn one of the outdoor hard court Masters into a grass Masters. As for the Slams there's no reason to change, the possible difference between 2 types of hard courts in terms of speed, height of the bounce and the affect of the environment is bigger than between 2 types of red clay.

I think after the 2019 AO Final, is when Nadal began to wish for another clay slam and avoided his rivals more often. Because before that, specifically, 2014-2016 he was losing his form. Then he had a bit of a resurgence if you want to call it that in 2017, and while he was losing to Federer and Djokovic in 2017-2018, it wasn't until the 2019 AO Final that he got absolutely obliterated in a major when healthy. It was that match that made him realise he could not compete with them outside of clay. Also, remember that he changed his game due to his age and did not even come close to competing with Novak in that match. Thus I think the 2019 AO Final is one of the biggest turning points in Nadal's career.

Lidocaine injections which eliminate any type of pain and give you strength, energy and speed... you can play ten hours of tennis with Lidocaine. The horse riding trainer from Hungary said ones that if his horse used Lidocaine he would always be the first and so should not be surprising how Nadal won the last few of GS, remember RG and AO 2023 against Medvedev.. Claydal would go out in 2nd round every other slam? -Carpet was banned as a playing surface in 2009. Nadal's least favourite conditions are indoor hard; carpet was exclusively played indoors and it was similar to grass - low bouncing extremely fast surface. How would Nadal have fared in such conditions? -There have been 4 surfaces in tennis(5 if you include wood). Nadal can only blame himself for specialising for just 1/4(5) surfaces. -In modern tennis, 2 of 3 professional tournaments are played on hard. It's treated as a default surface nowadays. Clay and grass have become specialist surfaces. It makes 0 sense to have another slam on clay when you look at the calendar and surface redistribution.

Nadal fans will remind us how many slams he missed due to injury (15 or sth) while Novak only missed 1. Yet they always include the 2 matches Novak retired due to health problems in the slam H2H. They don't seem to count his retirement as slams missed either. When Nadal lost to Novak twice at RG, even without apparent problems in his previous matches, they don't count cause he was injured. When Novak lost to Nadal twice at USO, each time after a gruelling 5 set semifinal while Nadal got the easiest opponent possible in the semis and got to play the match first, they make sure to ignore that. Also, Novak winning 50% of his slams since 2018 means it's a weak era (completely ignoring the fact that he won almost half in 11-16), but Federer winning 80% of his slams before 2011 and Nadal winning 64% of his slams at one event is totally fine.

@dragans1395 Год назад
I think you are right to highlight Borg as a player who deserves to be highlighted. Given that he ended his career prematurely, there is still doubt as to how many more trophies he would have won. But there is one statistical indicator, which, unfortunately, hardly anyone points out as very important, and which clearly shows who was what kind of player throughout the history of tennis. And that is the ratio of wins and losses or percentage of success. Novak is currently convincingly first with 83.7%, Nadal second with 83% and Borg third with 82.5% of wins. Federer is only in fourth place with 81.9%. For this indicator, it is not so important how long a career someone had, but how successful they were during their career. That is why it is possible to compare the quality of Borg with the later big three.

Nadal is just a WEAK clay era champion. Never faced a Borg, a Wilander, a Muster or a Vilas on clay ... Federer and Djokovic were never clay courters, clay was always their weakest surface And what if tennis had stayed the same with 3 grass slams? Becker, Edberg, Cash, Sampras, Federer and Djokovic would have won more majors Tennis (Lawn Tennis, the REAL name) was invented to be played on grass and wooden raquets dont forget about that; the dimensions of the court were paralleled with the velocity of the ball, the speed of the courts and the power the raquets could provide Now the technology changed it all and actual players play with the same court dimensions ... it would be fair to expand the area of the courts come and think of it. What should be done inmediately is: 1) Extend the Indoor season through the Australian Open, which should be played indoors. 2) Extend the grass season with at least 2 Masters 1000 before Wimbledon; these two could be Queens and Halle one after the other ... and of course ATP 250s and 500s like Newport, Rode Island, Stuttgart, Rosmalen, Eastborne, Mallorca ... 3) Speed the courts as they were before Then it woud be fair: Well balanced season in all 4 surfaces, with 4 slams played in 4 different surfaces (And of course bring back the old Davis Cup format)

@@hitthurdeaux Actually carpet should be the surface, Indoor carpet to be precise ... Also the Davis Cup final (with the past and former format) should be part of the season and played on indoor carpet as well + the Australian Championships in january and Rotterdam ... If the surface properties of the 2nd clay slam was closer to Madrid than to MC/Rome masters then he wouldn't have won that much more as you claim! Get out of here!...LMAO Why doesn't he have double digit Madrid titles by now, but instead only 5 (actually 4, because his 5th one was when it was played on indoors during fall season!)?? Additionally he had 5 opportunities (realistically 4) to win Hamburg masters on clay before 2009 and yet he has won only 1 back in 2008! So between Hamburg and Madrid surfaces, what is that which makes Nadal's results significantly lower than at MC, Rome, Barcelona or RG?? So by saying if there were another clay slam Nadal would have won 35 slams means not knowing tennis history!...

Some of his fans act like Nadal when healthy was undefeated at RG, well of course he was when you just chop up all his losses to injury. 2015 was one of the best seasons ever for top 4 players as they almost reached every slam semifinals and masters finals, there’s a post on Reddit proving that (2015 is tied with 2011 in that regard, go figure). And Novak absolutely dominated that year (and 2011) along with a mind boggling 31 top 10 wins. That right there should’ve closed all discussions as to who’s the most dominant at their peak. But some Nadal fans want to discredit 2015 because he’s in poor form. Imagine trying to discredit other players because of your own failure, when you’re perfectly healthy, no less.
