In the hilarious rockumentary This is Spinal Tap released in 1984, Spinal Tap guitarist Nigel Tufnel proudly boasts of his Marshal amp, “This is a top to what we use on stage, but it’s very, very special because, if you can see, the numbers all go to 11. Look, right across the board: 11, 11, 11.”

Sounds like the first shot in 'the loudness wars'. I heard an engineer, maybe Alan Parsons, refer to modern recording-mixdown techniques (especially noticeable in remasters of older albums) as often being a situation of "everything is at the front of the mix".
@charlesstebbins7207
@charlesstebbins7207 4 года назад
Sound is actually pressure waves moving the air. A decibel of sound is actually a measurement of how energetic 1 of these pressure waves is. At around 165 decibels, your eardrum fractures. At around 1,8000 decibels, your scull fractures & you die. I guess what I'm saying is... "louder isn't always better".

I've read about some food products labelled to contain 110% meat (or some other number above 100). And this is not false advertising but correct! That's because it's dried, so 100g of the stuff is actually made from more than 100g of raw meat.

Valid point when I hear that 110% is impossible I always think wait so you are telling me that a vehicle can not drive at a speed of 110% faster than another vehicle? It absolutely can and why can't that also be applied to sound or any other comparison? In theory yes some things are impossible at over 100% but thats an awfully inaccurate falsehood when used as a blanket statement with what we do know let alone the untapped knowledge yet to be discovered.

My guitar Headrush pedalboard made by a company named Eleven indeed goes up to eleven.
@rodrigozamo
@rodrigozamo 4 года назад
Actually the name is indeed a reference to the joke of the film. It was originally made by AVID, the makers of Pro Tools (Digidesign back in 2008) and was released as a rack processor called the 11 Rack to compete against the POD and the Boss line of products. Then they released the plugin version for Pro Tools, the 11 Plugin. What Headrush did was to take the 11 plugin under license, tweaked it, updated the engine and released it as a product. It is pretty much the updated version of the 11 Rack, but in a floorboard format. So the name of the company is Headrush, the name of the product is simply the Headrush Pedalboard but it's running the 11 plugin engine.

@nine300
@nine300 4 года назад
This is probably because we use a base-10 numeral system (10 fingers), so we see 10, 100, etc. as representing a complete unit and therefore 11 or 110 stands for the idea of "just a little extra." It represents a step beyond the limit of what was thought to be possible. Similarly, the number 12 has connotations of completion due to our 12-hour clock, 12-month year, etc., and I wonder if this relates to 13 being seen as unlucky. Both 11 and 13 are prime.
@bitset3741

on the hi-fi side of things, amplifier actuators actually sometimes start at negative infinity (maximum resistance to the line out signal so that such a low level signal is going to the amplifier that no sound can be heard by the human ear) and goes up to zero (no resistance to the line out gain meaning the amplifier simply amplifies the signal to it's maximum). So the idea of "turning up to 11 really should be turning it up to zero.

It shows where bodies were located and how they were positioned upon the ground take a gang gunfight for example bad guy 1 kicks in the door opens fire on bad guy 2 and 3 guy 2 drops right in the living room while guy 3 managed to run to another room before expiring the way they fall and are positioned could give clues to what happened or what they were trying to do b4 death

This just goes to show that people don't understand fractions. There is only a certain maximal level for any amp. Therefore, whether you divide these possible levels into 10, 11, or 100 pieces, you will only be able to put the maximal amount of sound through that amp. I had a hard time with fractions too. Here's a hint: take an auto shop class because sometimes the tools are in metric and sometimes they are in standard but they give you an easy way to deal with whatever you have. If only the math professors had told me that fractions were division. I learned that in auto shop. In any case, dividing any one thing's maximal power by 10 or 11 is infinitely less absurd than the notion of 110%. Percent means per cent or 100. This is supposed to imply that the limit is 100 and, if you get over than, instead of exceeding 100%, you need to put the highest number at the top, as 100, and calculate other things relative to that. If you don't want to do that, you're back to fractions against and, as I have previously stated, many people don't understand fractions. This is because they are truly weird when you first encounter them, just as many of the rules in English make learning just about any other language absurd at first. Numbers only seem harder because they are symbols. Imagine you were learning Hebrew, Chinese, or Arabic. Symbols only make the language seem more daunting at first. Having English as a first language makes most languages daunting at first. Imagine how everyone else feel trying to learn this language!

The RS-25 rocket engines on the Space Shuttle were throttleable to 110% and past that and so they were, for as , "you guessed it" , flying to LEO.

I would guess the writers for Spinal Tap likely were making fun of Eddie Van Halen since his signature sound that so many guitarists around the time were trying to replicate was made by turning up everything on the amp to 10 and putting a boost in front of his amp to be even louder and more distorted than his amp would normally be on 10. That makes it even funnier that it hit the mark so well that Eddie wanted to make it a reality.

My theory is 11 comes from people being mistaken believing there are 10 numbers between 0-10 is10. It isn't, is 11. 10 is 0-9, then the next 10 is 10-19, etc. As, most people "how many numbers are between 0-10, and most would answer: 10. Okay, assuming this right, the other thing most people can't agree on is what is the first counting number, 0 or 1? If you did start at 0, then there are 11 numbers between 0-10. Now, enter someone who knows math, or is a lawyer, and they realize if they start the volume count at 1, then they need to go to 11 to have the same number of volume levels as dials that go from 0-10. This makes the most sense to me, after watching Simon's video, writing software, knowing math and a little about people's first answer to a seemingly simple question math question.

Bonus super late to the game fact, Soldano amps always went to 11, not counting the Lucky13 that went to, you guessed it 13. Eddie Van Halen used Soldano amps in 1991, and based the 5150 off I want to say the Hotrod 100 or the SLO100.
