@stagna1959
@stagna1959 Год назад
Technically I think he stopped the clock and shook hands before his time ran out. But plenty of losses in W CH were because of bad time trouble. Increment is recent invention and in old times it did not exist at all. Actually it is pretty good that playing without increment at least for first several hours is back. Result of chessgame was always about 1 ) position on board 2 ) time management Both factors are equally important and both players can use same amount of time

@thesnackbandit
@thesnackbandit Год назад
@@cihanbaran5738 It is more accurate to say that he knew he had screwed up so he let his time run that low. It's not like he was actually blitzing out moves and flagged. And at that point, he still had 45s to make 5-6 moves, which is obviously easily possible (albeit with subpar moves). That time spent was simply to come to terms with the game and resign. Think Gukesh - Nodierbek at the chess olympiad.
@cihanbaran5738
@cihanbaran5738 Год назад
@@thesnackbandit letting time run low=he was getting flagged. It does not matter if you are blitzing out moves and you suddenly realize that your time went out. The problem is the downward spiral. Too many lines to check, time gets low, you realise it, then realise you have too many line to check, the first couple ones you check ended up not looking good so you know you have to look for more, time is lower, you realise you don't have time to think, but you have to and from there your mind think about the time and not the game, it becomes too difficult to concentrate, you freeze.

@@Kodaira023 You can call that misevaluated. Sometimes you are just unlucky as you choose to look at several lines that looked promising but after spending minutes realize they are not. It was heartbreaking to see live to say the least. This is exactly what I was dreading going by his past few games. A complete psychological break down. I don't know if he can come back up from this. Surely I hope that he can and he will. When you watch Nepo's press interviews, even he was not so bullish today as he always other days, it was so bad even his opponent didn't want to mount more pressure on him. Kudos to Nepo as well

I think this is where Nepo's previous experience plays a significant role. He's been there before. Ding is carrying the world on his shoulders in a way. Last night i spoke to a strong player in our club (not a GM but quite strong). He said it helps a great deal if one can focus only on the game itself, disconnecting from all externalities, and that the psychological dimension is a big factor. Its more easily said than done and esp. when so much rides on the games result.

In the after the game interview, he just explained how every move he thought of could be readily refuted. Thus, he couldn't find a way to make a good move, and make progress; while Nepo had a very secure K and good attacking chances with many of his responses. It wasn't an emotional problem - just a very difficult chess position.

It’s sad because he made a comment about how he spent all of his time in the rest area and he felt proud of himself because now he can at least play without crumbling He’s trying his absolute best and I really want to see the guy succeed. This is 100% mentality and it’s sad to see somebody not be able to utilize their skills

There was more to it than "time management" - he was really struggling in the middle game after Nf6 to not get checkmated so had to burn a lot of energy and time to sort those issues out, and then he just hit the wall from exhaustion.
