Last year I started my beans indoors and I used toilet paper rolls, the empty ones. I filled them with dirt put my seating and dedicated a whole tray to them and when they were ready to be planted out I just took the whole tube and planted the whole thing into the ground. Worked great!

On point#3 @7:23 another benefit not mentioned is that you dont have to harden them off since they would be used to the outside elements. Only problem is, it takes just 1 cold night that you forget to bring them inside and its all over.
@WeatherNut27
@WeatherNut27 4 года назад
On point #2 @1:22 I start 150 seeds and have always potted up. Dont know why but I feel like seeds will germinate better and easier in the trays vs more spread out in cups. I might try starting a few in cups this year.
@WeatherNut27

On point #1...when to plant... patience is key too. People feel that warmth in March and get the itch. Here in SW CT Mothers Day is the transplant rule of thumb. (MidMay). Then mother nature can throw tricks in May too

Personally I happen to like transplanting to bigger pots as they grow I think its part of the fun! Again, great video Gary! I didn't know to add 2 weeks after the last frost date and THEN count back but that does make more sense! Gary you're such a dime! I started some strawberry seeds indoors from some store bought strawberries, they did germinate but I didnt have my lights yet and when I did put them under the lights the outer rim of the tiny leaves started to shrivel and turn brown so I figured I had my lights too close or maybe since they were already germinated the lights were just too much for them all at once, so i raised it up, now the light is about 5 inches above I'd say, but they just still arent growing very fast? They are getting another set of leaves in the center or the existing leaves which gives me hope, I just hope they're healthy? I know last year when I grew alpine strawberries they took FOREVER! I do know that the light I have on them now has only 1280 lumens (that's all i could find in my price range at the time) but 5000k, so maybe i should add another light to the other side, they're in the plastic container the strawberries came in from the store with a clamp light! So much troubleshooting but it's a blast! I wish I could sit down with you and just talk about gardening! And maybe keep you for the planting season!!! Lol that would be awesome!

You are a great teacher! Always enjoy watching your tutorials. Questions: I started my tomato and sweet peppers 3 weeks ago. Everything looks fine until last week I noticed that the tomato leaves are curling upwards and turning purple. Is it missing phosphorus or is it something else? Also, is there a reason that you prefer styrofoam cups over plastic ones for your seedings? Thanks!

A great guide for seed starting is found in this book: Week-by-week Vegetable Gardeners Handbook. It lets you work backward/forward from you area's frost dates and tells you when to start seeds and when to transplant to the garden for each individual crop. There is space to keep records for 3 years as well as task lists for each week of the year. It is an excellent resource for both beginning and experienced gardeners.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I don't know frozen it doesn't happen here a cold day is 15 degrees C. I found an app called Gardenate which give the subtropical sowing and planting dates. I'm still adapting fro the New Zealand climate to this and even after 20 years I'm still getting it wrong. I've just finish constructing a greenhouse to stop predators such as Italian fruit fly which in the past has decimated my tomato crops and while doing that I set it up for hydroponics the lazy man's garden. I'm hoping to offset my costs by staring a small nursery. IA soil garden here was almost impossible as the 2 acres is 90% sandstone. I wasn't about to give as because of that I have access to an abundance of water with a very neutral Ph so I figured go hydroponics which is not everybodyies cup of tea. I was offered a great deal by Autopot Australia so took them up on it So far everything I've grown in it has produced better than expected except I fed a lot of bugs and fruit fly's. So that is what got the idea of a green house with lots of bug protection going. But all your videos I'm finding translate across to what I'm doing especially the propagation videos. I've become an avid fan. Thanks so much

Hye Gary, first time grower here. I have a question on how and when to fertilize tomato, peppers and eggplant plants after the transplant.? I live in a tropical climate where the only worry (weather wise) is too much sun or too much rain..I guess these plants would be perennial plants for me. Thanks Gary.!.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
So the answer is it varies. If you are adding compost and the like... a lot less often. Generally speaking you can put down granular fertilizer in the planting hole when you transplant and sprinkle some on the surface every 3 months. This can be replaced with compost. I would feed them with a water soluble fertilizer every 4 weeks. But it varies so much. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I’ve always tried to start growing anything. Usually grab veggies already with a root and just waiting to be transplanted. Only issue I’ve been having over the years is the Arizona heat. Yesterday was 104 with humidity and it felt more like 110. Any suggestions on how I can successfully get cherry tomatoes to grow? I’m willing to do the take outdoors a few hours a day. This time I’m starting from seeds.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 года назад
Outdoor seeds in flats should stay on your north or east side and just get morning sun. The baking sun can heat those trays crazily. Better yet, I would get 70% shade cloth and seed start under that as it lets light in. The shade cloth can be more in the sun, souther side. If you having outdoor trouble with plants in the ground growing, shade clothe also helps. You can find items I use or discuss in videos, by checking out my Amazon Storefront for fertilizer, pest management, shade cloth, seed starting supplies, books and more! at www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. @THERUSTEDGARDEN

It really has to be 100% direct sun for like 10 hours. If not legginess happens. It is bright light it has to be sun rays. So you have to watch how the sun tracks and plants so taller plants dont cast shadows on smaller plants during the high sun times. I think this video talks about it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O5E1gEjnOWM.html

My seeds germinates but they’re not growing. I planted peppers, tomatillos, chard and kale. They are close to the lights and I have them on for 14-16 hours a day. It’s 66-70 degrees in the house and they’re by a window for extra light. Help and thank you.

The peppers and tomatillos may require a warmer area (75 -85 degrees) or possibly a heat mat.

If it has been over 10 days since germination, give them a light feeding of nitrogen. Very light. Please visit The Rusted Garden Homestead Seed & Garden Shop at www.therustedgarden.com for all your seed starting supplies, seeds, oils, harvest bags, journals and more. THANKS!

Why did you add two weeks to your Last Frost Date? I'm assuming to account for any late freezes?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

Late freezers and this way you dont have to worry. But... I tend to put mine out ealier and have cloches and covering ready if a frost comes. Ill talk about that in later videos. Can I start all my seeds indoors at the same time, and just keep them growing indoors until it's time to go outside? Or do I need to stick to this schedule and plant them all at different times?

If you start indoors with grow lights, do you have to acclimate your plants to the sunlight when you transplant them outdoors?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 4 года назад
Always but at trick is take them out when they are tiny and still in flats and give them some sun a few times a week. That helps a lot. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. The weeks are from after seed germination, correct?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 года назад
Yes and no. Outdoors seeds can take weeks to germinate because of cold so maturity date is germination forward. Indoors they germinate quickly for our transplant timing. You can include or exclude it. It doesnt make much of a difference for seeds that pop in a week. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks Gary. This seems an important point, to me anyways, yet i don't think I've ever seen it explained anywhere else. I don't think I've seen the germination time incorporated in calculating fall crop planting dates either. At least not mentioned explicitly

I want to know if you fill up your larger containers with seed starting or you put some soil. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
