When easy fixes go wrong...

We've all been there, so suffer in spirit with me. There's a laundry list of fixes that I never set out to have to do in this video. I just wanted to fix some belt squeal and add a solenoid. Prepared like a Boy Scout, failed like journalism. But if you watch, in the video, I'm batting a thousand because everything that happens was supposed to happen. We tell the tales we lived to tell. You can never fix the problems you don't find. I was looking for two... I found like 10.
Patreon funds my operations here, I've been removing most mid roll ads on my latest videos because the default frequency of ad placements have made it difficult for me to share my message effectively on this platform. Watching you undo the power steering pump in tight quarters is making my brain have an empathic reaction and my hands are hurting just watching you slide hands in/out past the metal shields/brackets etc. But I did learn a LOT. I complained about so many other things in the video, I felt it only necessary to imply it. Thank you for noticing the cramps and yes, those hose clamps are sharp, but fortunately blood and oil actually mix very well. Please note that neither ATF nor power steering fluid is oil... and it burns pretty good when you mix it with blood...

I enjoyed undoing and doing up my power steering pipe on my old volvo by 1/12 of a turn recently. Peaceful sort of exercise that. I also learned that you don't need to have the engine running to pump the fluid through. Just turning the wheel lock to lock will pump it through at a good rate and you don't risk running the pump dry. Then you can just catch the old fluid from the return if you want to replace it and keep filling the reservoir.

Damn do I feel this pain. I put a 2.3L millercycle v6 (KJ-ZEM) in a Protege5 back in 2015 and ended up having to build an engine mount stabilizer back to the strut tower for the RH side just to prevent the crank pulley from leaving marks on the frame rail. It was a radiator-out process for most anything with the accessories and engine-out if you want to do a timing belt or get the the timing covers off at all. Absolutely love your videos. Your recording/editing style and sense of humor combined with the totality of knowledge you bring to the table are top tier. Easily the most rewarding videos to watch in the automotive realm for me. Ah dang Jafro I went through a ton of issues with power steering myself on the Mirage build. I think I spent a grand on AN fittings and hose in total changing all the lines and still couldn't prevent leaks from occurring. (I think there was an overpressure issue with mixing Evo and MIrage stuff) I ended up ditching the hydraulic pump setup completely over the Winter in favor of doing a retrofit of an electric assist steering column for a Chevrolet Equinox/Saturn Vue. Believe it or not it was actually a fairly easy install and I think I spent $300 in total for the column from a picapart and a controller kit from epowersteering. Really cool setup as you actually get a potentiometer with the kit that lets you dial in how much power you want and it can be shut off to not put any extra load on the alternator on the drag strip plus you get to ditch all the pump and lines for weight savings and less drag on the engine and the best part is no more leaks! I have a couple videos of my process on my channel if you are interested.

hands down the EASIEST way to get around dealing with ALLLLL that frustration is to use a simple electric power steering pump that are literally litered in every junkyard in the nation.. volvo s40,s60 etc etc have them, SOME nissan altimas and a host of other cars have them.. the volvo pumps have normal power steering line hookups and honestly it's as simple as power,ground,remote turn on wire THAT'S IT.. so cut the pigtail harness connector when you get the pump and you only need 3 wires.. ignition on/run is what I use as a wake up signal to the pump. you'll kick yourself when you see how easy it is to retrofit the volvo pump into an existing system.. then you can remove the belt driven pump,brackets, belt etc etc.. then you might ask yourself "what about the power steering lines" i just ditch the factory high pressure line if I cant bend it to my will where I want the pump to mount.. if not just remove it and order a braided line in the legth you need and attach the right ends on it and now the line is easily placed where you want the pump to be. then just route the return line which is low pressure so its easy.. your done!

My story might help you- 2002, had my Pulsar 1.5L. Got out of work, PS pump seized. Got hacksaw blade, cut belt. Never replaced, just removed entire unit. Car was so small, easy to turn w/o PS. It's just parasitic latent horsepower anyway, especially cold molasses hydraulic fluid and tiny orifices, with a cooler in front, -℉ wind chill in December. My advice- find a manual steer. PS is for an Eldorado.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
I've got a manual rack for the AWD colt. I can tell you now, when it's sitting still on 16" inflated DSM wheels, you can't turn the wheel at all unless it's moving. But that's how it all was before power steering. Food still got to market, humans still ate it and continued their proliferation. Not having power steering did not end the human race. It's going to take more than that...

You could probably get some extra room under the hood by putting a second turbo on, and just free-blowing the compressor side through your engine's aquatic system, but removing the radiator and all the water. Since it wouldn't really be compressed (venting to atmosphere after passing through) the temperature shouldn't be much more than ambient, but the velocity would take away a bunch of heat.

A ball check valve would have fix the issue with the meth injection, placed after the pump, close to the injector(s).
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
It's not a back flow issue. It's a forward-flow issue. The tank being higher than the pump means the weight of the water in the line downstream from the pump, or in the case near the injectors, upstream from it with head pressure - will still push fluid past a 1-way check valve. My injector has a check valve, though it's not the ball style. But the solenoid stops it every time I cut off the engine, guaranteed. I don't have provisions for my kit to control the solenoid, but thanks to this car's specific OE automatic features that aren't being used, I think I have the perfect solution for how all of it integrates into this car. It's going to make it more awesome-r. Perhaps even a more practical execution of the entire kit and how I have my failsafe equipment set up for it. I need to map it out so its both presentable, and hilarious, but I'm going to finish that cylinder head first.

@TinkerLynx
@TinkerLynx 2 года назад
A ball style check valve uses a spring to hold the ball in place and takes several psi to open. A properly functioning one would not allow this leak by. Your solution should work just as well. I just have experience with hydraulics design and thought of the check valve.

When did the hyundai get a new radiator 😅 how did I miss that
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
It sprung a leak after I rebuilt its engine and reassembled the car. The old one just rotted out. This aluminum radiator was actually the original radiator that Jamie had in a Mirage that I sold him for $60 [edit: I sold him the Mirage for $60, he bought the radiator somewhere else]. He had it paired with the engine that's now on its third life now in my Elantra. That Mirage got T-boned by a Beetle, so Jamie bought the Elantra from a junkyard and swapped it with that engine. He insisted the car be built with all OEM factory used parts, and downgraded to the OE junkyard unit that it had before he gave it to me. I bought his aluminum radiator for the Colt from Jamie who thought it was too nice for the Hyundai. Now it's full circle back to being reunited with its original engine in the Hyundai. Same with the front mount intercooler that had the rag in it. What's also strange is those Flex-a-lites on that aluminum radiator are from my GSX, and I sold them cheap to Jamie, they ended up on the Hyundai, and then he gave it to me. Same thing with the transmission. So this transmission bolt problem is mine and only mine as far as I'm concerned because I'm the guy who originally pulled it from the 1990 Plymouth laser and started all of this to begin with. What is it with all these boomerang parts?

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
Yes, all the weight and camber adjustments we made before it was fixed now make the car launch pulling the other way even though it tracks straight when cruising. I'll be getting it re-aligned and hopefully onto a prepped 1/4 mile long track soon. In my first burnout you can see it barely smoking the outside edge of the passenger tire. Clearly my camber was affected by fixing it. That was the tire that went up in smoke every time, and it's right next to that mount. I got plenty of data from this trip, and the highway there and back yielded just as much info as the track. I will likely be Windowelding my rear lower control arm bushings, or finding a poly replacements. I'm convinced that a 1.9 60 foot will put this car deep into the 12's, and chasing number has already caused me to install everything necessary to tweak this car's geometry to get it. This is by far the most challenging front wheel drive chassis for anyone because the chassis record is mild, certainly within this car's reach with the power it's making, but making this this thing stick is an education all by itself. People used turbos 3x the size of mine to make a number that's a fraction of a second away. That means they fought all of the exact same traction issues, too.

That right there was the hardest pill to swallow... although before I rebuilt it, and when making hundreds less hp with a 14b, it still had a peg leg. I think I'm going to go ultimately need a 9" wheel. These 225's have a contact patch that's way too round on a 7" wheel. I don't make the contact patch necessary to stick a 20g in this car with FWD, I want to flatten it out. It's way too light-switch-spooly. I don't make the contact patch necessary to stick what a 20g produces. You're holding on for dear life fighting torque steer. All turning the boost down does is make it slow. It's like it wants the wheel spin in order to produce an ET even though it's counter-productive. With the mount fixed, I'm going to balance it all back out, get it re-aligned and try again. If it still doesn't work, I'm going to start stuffing my engine bay with GoPros aimed at chassis parts all over it and making test hits to see what's happening. Plan C is the 9" wheel. Plan D is a larger diameter wheel/tire. That is when this becomes less of a street car, and I really want a street car out of it.

I know. That track is just not equipped with it yet. The water box is also on a slope, so the water runs down to the launch box. There are issues, but I feel like they play into the whole street racing vibe of the place. I'm sure they'll have a timing system someday, but until then they're only overflowing with atmosphere and camaraderie. Still both good things. I did watch your AEM videos, and lament the old version of my kit that I have. My only experience with them is the 8G Galant I owned which had an N/A 4G63 SOHC (UK market), and the transmission in that car was an F5M42 mounted on the RIGHT side of the engine bay. Was this mirrored setup common to all Mitsubishi/Hyundai cars of this generation?
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
From 1989-1999 Mitsubishi used the SIRIUS I version of the 4g63. From 2000+ they used the SIRIUS II which flipped it around 180°. I say this without knowing what year your Galant was. Unless a Japanese company retooled one factory just for the UK, then I'm betting you had a 2000+ production car... FYI, all operational dimensions and specs of the rotating assembly are the same. Parts vary, but the journals, bores, clearances... same.

It uses a torque tube. There's literally a pipe that runs the length of distance from the brake pedal through the console to the passenger side of the car, where a cam lever actuates the brake master cylinder. It's a 2" pipe. Don't worry, it gets even weirder when you discover the clutch pedal mounts to that pipe, too. It's not welded to it like the brake pedal is, though. It's just its support.
