In a vein similar to the James Bond movies, British Agent Philip Calvert (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is on a mission to determine the whereabouts of a ship that disappeared near the coast of Scotland.

It blows that same years 'Diamonds are Forever' out of the water ! Even FYEO 'stole' the underwater fight from it - while this 'stole' the boat gun-battle from the story 'Risico' featured in the FYEO short story collection !

Not underrated at all it was at the least extremely slow and the plot just didn't seem right Bond movies always have a plot that's understandable Now another book that was written by the same author and made into a film (Air Force One is down) well that film is fantastic and I have watched it a few times This is just too slow and old-fashioned

I first read the novel by Alistair Maclean in 1968, I absolutely love it and it enticed me to read nearly all his books and also made me want to continue to read all my adult life. It was way better then the movie but I still enjoyed watching this and what a great cast.

Great Movie, I remember reading this book years back in my school days. I was a fan of Alistair Maclean novels, they are full of action and adventure! Authors like Alistair Maclean, Harold Robbins, Sidney Sheldon, Jack Higgins, Ken Follet, etc. are my favorites. Of course, James Bond movies are all-time hits. I haven't seen the earliest Bond movies but weren't they more like this? with the witty almost hard-to-follow dialogue exchanges, modest stunts, and nothing particularly over the top. If not, then this one set a bit of a standard for its time, a standard that has indeed aged very well as the earlier comment noted. .

@@stevengrotte2987 Did you notice a drop off in quality sometime around the mid-1970s? I’ve read roughly the first half of his output and have read on a couple occasions how Maclean’s writing quality falls into a precipitous decline owing to his unfortunate period of alcoholism starting about that time.

First very good quality and sound, no blasted adverts in it, and shown from start to finish. Firm released in 1971, and a sort of 'Bond' type film, only with Commander Calvert, instead of Commander Bond. Nice cast with some well known faces, and a quite enjoyable film for about 90 minutes. The 'girls' are nice 'eye candy' but the acting not quite up to their looks, but never mind....:) Just to be a bit picky, but the first fight on board the ship with the 'bald' baddie, I could see his 'bald' scalp moving and crinkling on top of his head, probably covering a full head of hair....:) Checking your channel, you seem to have a range of films, not checked any, but I suspect the quality will be just as good as this one, so have subscribed..

What a fine 'flick'. You can always count on Anthony H. in any movie. Youngest I've seen him. He simply got better with age. Seeing the FN FAL & Sterling sub machine guns in action stirred memories of my time in the Canadian Forces.... ;)

"But these are not the proper biscuits!?"... A most underrated movie but with a protagonist that is unconventional, unpredictable, and un- pretentious. They should have made a sequel .

When Nine bells toll? ~ They did make other McLean books into films, Puppet on a Chain is actually quite like this in terms of style and was released about the same time.

Pretty good. It's worth a watch primarily because of Anthony Hopkins' actorly presence. The movie really suffers when bombastic music is played during the fight scenes though. It's such a strange impulse to lighten up violent scenes.

It’s a difficult comparison-Fleming wrote 12 novels of which half were first rate (“From Russia With Love”, OHMSS, “Dr. No”, “Thunderball”, especially) yet wrote several that are only passable. Maclean had over double the output but nearly half are generally considered substandard. But the good certainly outweighs the bad and I’m very enamored of “Ice Station Zebra”, “Night Without End”, “Fear is the Key”, “The Guns of Navarone”, “The Satan Bug” and “When 8 Bells Toll”.
