When Frank Bruno Fought The Great White Hope 

I remember meeting Frank Bruno at a meet and greet when I was about 15 with my younger brothers (both still massively into boxing) more so than anyone I’ve ever meet. Frank was lovey, deep voice, big stature and huge hands draped over out shoulders. Frank had a fantastic domestic career, and that step to world championship was probably the hardest fought win I can honestly say in heavyweight boxing history. Who else fought for the title 4 times against 4 different fighters and came up trumps in the end!! Ooh and of those fights where two of the greatest to ever do it; Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. If you’ve seen the fights, Bruno had them both hurt at time. LOVE BRITISH BOXING, LOVE FRANK BRUNO! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Big Frank is a legend and National hero. In Britain we are extremely proud of him. I loved watching him box and win lose or draw he gave his best. God bless you Frank. 🇬🇧👍

Frank was a great fighter looking back. He was powerful with a ramrod left jab and a tremendous right hand. A massive puncher who was capable of taking anyone out with a single punch. He gave a good account of himself against one of the all time greats Lennox Lewis and eventually achieved his goal of becoming world champion. I think he was unlucky in the fact he happened to be in an era of such great heavyweights what with Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield big George Foreman it wasn’t an easy task getting hold of a world title. I think if he’d have been in this era now with Fury and Wilder I honestly think he would have torn through today’s generation with the exception maybe of Usyk. Today’s fighters would struggle with Franks power and don’t forget Frank also had a chin of granite. He was never on the canvas in his career. Genuine sporting hero and nice guy to go with it. God bless him 👍

Big Frank is a national hero and a lovely fella ....

Even after all these seeing big Frank lifts your heart , he was such a likeable guy ( not that I knew him personally ) I had tears in my eyes when he became world champion.

Praise and criticism of Frank were over the top. Early on, he was considered as the saviour of heavy weight boxing (particularly in Britain), then after a few defeats he was thought of as chinny with no stamina. He did put British heavyweight boxing back on the map and won a world title. Good man too

Frank Bruno , was seriously UNDERRATED , bumped into tyson at the wrong time , and unlucky in his other fights . Yes unlucky Another period of time would of been a world Champion undefeated.

People who weren’t around at the time don’t realise how popular big frank was……I can remember a mates name coming back from meeting him when frank opened a bookmakers in south London…..she was as excited as a schoolgirl at a boyband concert 😂……a real British boxing hero……not an all time great……but a man of the people…..did more for race relations in Britain than any politician

Bruno had an awesome physique!. Tremendous power. But didn't have the awareness to hold when hurt much or the killer instincts when he hurt much better opposition. Still a great fighter though. Huge amount of respect for Big Frank! 👏. Who won his World title in the end. Only 5 losses from a long fought career!🇬🇧👊🏾

I wish i'd known all about Coetzee and what a good guy he was. For 38 years I had assumed him to be a virulent racist.

Bruno was limited regarding the World Title scene. He was however, a dedicated pro that always came into his fights in the best condition he could be in. He trained like a Spartan. He had a great right hand but a weak chin. I don't think he's got anything to be ashamed of. He gave the sport everything he could and sadly, failed on the testing world scene. God Bless him.

In an interview before he died Gerrie Coetzee said he threw this fight for a betting scam,i don't believe this at all because he got up after the first knock down so why get up and take another big shot??

Brunos a great example of what it is to be a human as we can have a great body, hair, looks, style, skill, appeal, personality, mental agility and yet to find all of something in one place doesn't happen unless that is, in others heads 🧠

God, Bruno was so mechanical. No wonder he got whupped when he fought the likes of Tyson and Lewis.

It’s too bad that Bruno couldn’t muster his best in the really big fights, like Witherspoon, Tyson and Lewis. That era had a lot of good heavyweights.

Coetze was a very good fighter,& would knock the crap out of many of today's fighters..It was lucky for frank that he met him at the end of his career.

Fought at a time when the heavyweights were heavyweights,tyson,lewis,Witherspoon he fought them all and never ducked them, when reputation was on the line and not money

Frank Bruno’s fighting weight was circa. 17.5 stones. To be just over 15 stones for a height of 6’3” would be fairly scrawny.

Until I heard of Frank Bruno in the 80s.. I had never heard of the name Bruno being used as a surname.. Only a Christian or first name.. In fact their was a lad who lived in my street as a kid called Bruno but I've long forgotten his surname.. Then there is Bruno Brooks the Dj and radio presenter.. Bruno Mars the singer... Just saying 😊

Frank lives a couple of miles away from me. His multi-million pound mansion became worthless when the local farmer sold the surrounding land to create the largest Irish traveller colony in Europe.

There was a welsh heavyweight , David bomber Pearce, fought out of Newport, wales , they kept Frank well away from him , did nt want any upsets on Franky boy s record.....

Good fight. Good thing dude didn't get in the ring with Tyson. Tyson destroyed Bruno twice

Bruno was a useless fake. He had a good physique and plenty of power, but zero boxing ability. He had a glass jaw, and no killer instinct. He was an embarrassment and yet he was worshipped for being a failure! He boxed like the robot boxers of the kids rockem sockem boxing game. He was stiff as hell and was screwed the minute his opponent put it on him. His favourite punch was the punch to the back of his opponent’s head in a clinch…..just awful technique. Thank Christ Lennox came along to save British embarrassment!
