In this All Sports History video we'll look back at Hank Aaron's historic career home run chase of Babe Ruth's legendary record of 714 home runs. While also cove how difficult the chase was, and how Aaron's record was eventually broken just 33 years later. We'll cover all of that and more!
Here's what this "Hank Aaron Documentary" video covers:
On April 8th 1974, Hank Aaron broke one of baseball’s most hallowed records. Aaron hit his 715th career home run, surpassing the legendary Babe Ruth. In today’s video we’ll take a look back at how the record was broken, and the unprecedented pressure Hank Aaron overcame in becoming baseball’s career home run king.
We'll also look back at some of Hank Aaron highlights throughout his career, like the how he got started playing professional baseball with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Baseball League. After signing with the Milwaukee Braves and playing his first MLB game, Aaron began crushing home runs regularly. Then we'll go through the epic home run chase, after Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth. After that, early in the 1974 season Hank Aaron 715th home run finally broke Babe Ruth's career home run record. Eventually Hank Aaron last home run, number 755 would come while playing with the Brewers in 1976. We'll also cover Barry Bonds 756 home run that broke Hank Aaron's record, and you'll see how Hank Aaron congratulates Barry Bonds. Lastly, we'll cover how the Hank Aaron funeral beautifully had him ride past the last remaining piece of Fulton County Stadium one last time. Going past the very wall he hit 715 over.
What did you guys think about Hank Aaron hitting and breaking Babe Ruth’s career home run record? And what did you think about Barry Bonds eventually breaking Hank Aaron’s record? Let me know in the comments below!

@@AllSportsHistory You could almost say the same about the single season home run chase in 1998(?), when both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were both pushing to break Roger Maris' record. That one is debatable though.
@UNUSUALUSERNAME220
@UNUSUALUSERNAME220 3 года назад
@@bluebear1985 Yep. Maris had to have an asterisk next to his name, why shouldn't those two roid heads. Those records are not revered by people that see things for the way that they are. I would feel ashamed to have my name associated to an event where it is well known that cheating was involved. Sosa does not discuss it. Bonds still insists that he was legit. McGuire has disappeared, and should remain persona non grata when discussing great players that did not cheat.

Nice presentation on Hank Aaron. He may never have hit 50 homeruns in a season , but was very consistent (like your presented in your video). As far as career MLB "Homerun Kings" go, Aaron, Ruth and Bonds in their respective playing era. I would add Mays (military service probably prevented him from the "700 Club"), Josh Gibson (sadly we'll never really know). I think Pujos is approaching "700" (but not sure, don't follow baseball closely these days).

Hank was my dad's favorite player, and I was named Nathaniel Aaron in honor of him. I met him when I was 8 years old, 37 years ago, at a banquet. He sent me a Christmas card that year! He was a great man, and I'll never forget him.

I wasn't alive for that momentus occasion yet as I was born in 1973 but I remember hearing the call made by the most iconic baseball announcer and a man I grew up listening to as a Dodger fan, Vin Scully. His call of Aaron's homerun is easily my second favorite of his behind his call of Kirk Gibson's homerun in the 88 World Series

If you read Henry Aaron's biography, the name Hank was thought up by the Braves publicist to make Henry seem more colorful. He hated the name, and would not respond to it. He would say that his parents named him Henry.

I remember watching the game on TV. We were visiting my grandparents, and I got to stay up to see the game since the home run chase was something I was interested in, and it was one of those "you'll want to see it live" moments, like when we got to watch the Apollo-11 moon landings, and Richard Nixon's resignation.

Hank Aaron hit home run number 715 on April 8 1974 and on the 50 year Anniversary of that day the Great American eclipse is going to take place on April 8 2024. This will be the second great American eclipse in 7 years and those eclipse paths will mark an X across America and there paths will meet in Makanda Illinois. This eclipse will also take place on the same night as the NCAA National basketball Championship game which will be taking place in Phoenix Arizona Monday April 8 2024. So that's going to be a big night. Exactly 21 years before that Great American eclipse takes place I almost drowned in Fort Wayne where the 2 rivers meet in Ft. Wayne Indiana. A series of strange incidents happened to me that morning which ended with me Meeting a man named OZ at St. Joseph hospital. That is the day I walked the yellow brick road in real life and this all happened the morning after Carmelo Anthony and The Orangemen upset Kansas to win their only National basketball championship on April 8, 2003. The Darkside of the Rainbow was discovered in the same city Fort Wayne Indiana. I calculated the Mark of the beast as well. The number 333 has followed my entire life and that is what helped me figure out who the Antichrist is. Philadelphia is one of the 7 churches of revelation and was this Nations original capital. Philadelphia to Canton Ohio is exactly 333 miles as the Crow flies. Canton is where Marilyn Manson was born and also the football Hall of fame. Canton Ohio to Chicago is Exactly 333 miles as the crow flies. This route from Philly to Canton to Chicago equals exactly 666 miles the mark of the beast. Chicago is where Anton Lavey published the satanic Bible the same year Marilyn Manson was born 1969. Anton and Manson became friends in 1994 after meeting each other in Anton's black house in San Francisco. 2 years later Manson released his most popular album Antichrist Superstar. Fort Wayne Indiana is exactly 333 miles as the crow flies from Metropolis Illinois, Superman's hometown. The Birdman of Alcatraz was buried in Metropolis as well. The creator of Superman George Siegel actually died on what would have been the Birdman's 106th Birthday. My life came together in numerical order as well. My wife was born on January 26, 1980 I was born on January 27, 1980 and thr Birdman of Alcatraz on January 28 1890. The Birdman died the day before JFK was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. In the Metropolis graveyard in Illinois directly across from where the Birdman lies is a married couple Jack and Ruby and right next to them lies a Jack Kennedy. Jack Ruby killed Lee Harvey Oswald.

I'll be honest here, with no bias...back when Ruth was playing, there were no real quality pitchers that were dominant or had the measures of the ones Aaron had to face, like Koufax, Gibson, and others. Ruth's toughest pirchers would likely included Dizzy Dean, but there was no real power pitchers in the American League when Ruth was playing that could have stood up against him. Although Aaron's record stood for 33 years (and it should have stayed longer), Bonds was no power hitter. He didn't make his name known until the allegations of PED abuse started soreading like it did in the 1990s. He refused to testidy in Congress that he, even though he still blatabtly refuses to be a man and admiit it, and that told the world that he really contiributed to breaking Aaron's record based on PED usage. Aaron never took any sort of PED. So I like to say that, in my opinion, Aarom IS the true home run record holder, hands down.
@AllSportsHistory
@AllSportsHistory 3 года назад
100% agree, Ruth was obviously extremely talented and would have most likely done very well against a desegregated league. But how dominant would he have been, who knows? And the yeah Barry Bonds was also super talented before the roids and it’s a shame he basically took the easy way out. His record doesn’t mean much to me, since he clearly cheated the game to achieve them. In my mind Aaron’s 755 and Maris’ 61 are the real home run records.

If you look at Barry Bonds rookie baseball card, his body type was that of a base stealer than Mr. Olympia. A few years and many injections later, Bonds looks like the Incredible Hulk when he’s pissed. So let me put it a different way; how many more home runs would have Aaron wrists popped over ML ballparks if he was on the juice? In the baseball handbook, maybe there should be a pre and post steroid home run count.
@chrisphillips348

STILL the Record holder despite Bonds. Bonds had BALCO, Aaron did this without….to quote Denis Leary “Hit 755 HRs without the Benefit of Even just Advil!” Ruth, had he not pitched for 5 years would have obviously set a higher target, but I’d like Hanks chances! Ruth is the greatest player ever, a HOF pitcher or Hitter, the career WAR leader. But I wore 44 playing basketball forAaron for years!

@@redrum9484 Hank was healthier. He was able to play MLB longer. Endurance is key to consistency and to break records. And pitchers got better every decade as real athleticism naturally increased among players and standards over time. If Babe slowed down on the hot dogs and beer, maybe those 2 months he was on the IL could have helped him get a few more HRs. And he was out of shape one year he could have hit 30 more. But alas, Aaron broke his record fair and square by being durable and strong enough to play longer and from a young age. Just gotta face facts and you can do it with some rum, red rum.
