When is a 2 Way Switch NOT a 2 Way Switch

In this video we take a look at a 1 gang 2 way switch and we explain how this can be used as a one way switch.
This video has been designed to go on the RU-vid shelf as a short video in portrait mode.
Videos are training aids for City and Guilds (C and G) and EAL courses Level 1, 2 and 3.

in the states, that's a 3-way, and if you add more, the ones in between the ends are 4-way switches. and here, up is on, and down is off, as a holdover from the old knife switches, where you mounted them with the hinge at the bottom so it couldn't fall closed.

speaking of switch orientation. apparently some places like different things. in the UK, does the light go on when the lower half of the switch is pushed in?

They used to have moulded into the plastic on the inside of the front plate “top” and “ for 1 way use L2” or similar. Falling standards everywhere!

Why turn the switch upside down so it switches the right way when you can just as easily sxwitch L1 o L2 or vice versa.

Serious question. Why do they make 1 way and 2 way switches? Why not just make intermediates? Just use intermediates and reduce your sprocket holding by 66% 😊

@posei3960 A one way switch is simply a circuit breaker. Whereas a two way switch actually SWITCHES the current to another circuit so another two way switch can operate the same thing (often a light on a staircase). A two way switch can replace a one way switch just by diverting the current to nowhere (thus breaking the circuit) but a one way switch can not replace a two way switch unless the two way switch was only being used as a circuit breaker. Hope that explains... it baffled me for many years too.😊😊😊

@@DelTangBrav Technically you can do the same by only connecting the switch conductors to two of the terminals on the intermediate. I have used 2-way switches as a selector switch before. My parents wanted their outdoor lights on a timer and they had a 2-way circuit already installed. It was fed from the garage and ended by their front door, so I removed the garage 2-way switch, connected one traveler to live, then the switched wire on the timer went to the other traveler. Now the front door switch can select On or Auto, and the garage switch is Off, Auto, or On. If you really think this switching is confusing, here in North America we call a 1-way a 2-way(2 terminals), 2-way a 3-way(3 terminals), an intermediate a 4-way(4 terminals). And there are 3 ways to wire a 3-way(North America), one of which is illegal and out of practice 100 years ago, so I guess you can say there is 2 ways to wire a 2-way(Europe).
