Today we have David's watch on the bench, a 1970's Memosail regatta watch that belonged to his father. The topic of this video is at what point is a watch too far gone to do anything about it and sadly, this video does thus not have a happy ending.
Join me for a discussion of how to deal with rusty watches and what we have to consider when dealing with a badly damaged watch like this one.

Such a shame, but it happens. For the rest of us we should learn that any watch dunked in salt water should go straight to a watchmaker to get the salt water out. It's so corrosive, and keeps corroding until removed.

I am restoring a Bulova with a 11ANACD movement for a customer, it has great sentimental value and he wanted to see it working again. opening up it to had water ingress at the stem and red with rust, also never been serviced since bought in the 70's. he was lucky it just stoped working and put it away so the rust was just confined to the keyless works, its now on test working again but i have had source a winding pinion from Australia and i'm in the uk!! parts are becoming more and more difficult to source. Hope some of the parts from yours can see another day in another movement.

Brave of you even to try - I did think the fact that the fluid for easing the rust being called Screw Loose seemed rather appropriate though! I note there was what I think is the same model for sale for £455 on a website so a complete heart transplant would, I suppose, be possible! However probably more sensible to find the best one and maybe use the back off his father's watch.

Sad story indeed. I'm into old mechanical cameras and the golden rule with seawater always used to be, once they have seawater on them, immediately drop them in a bucket of freshwater and soak them, repeat several times and then get the camera repaired ASAP. You can try to force dry the camera after rinsing and soaking in freshwater for several days or just take it straight to the repairer in a fresh water container. Seawater rusts steel severely almost at once if left untreated.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices Год назад
Yep, sea water is death to steel. The owner probably didn't think it would damage the watch as much as it did, and didn't know the watch needed to be cleaned immediately. There's also of course the thing that the marketing message of "water proof" the makers engraved on the cases back then is still there and it takes a certain level of knowledge to assess how valid that is 50 years after the watch was made...

This makes me a little sad indeed. I myself would have given up even trying to repair this watch right in the beginning. It's a pity, but the amount of work presenting itself seems to be just too much even without regarding the financial aspect. Thanks also for Your little reflection on our society in general, well, capitalism really, which we all try to survive in. Collecting (and repairing and selling!) vintage watches may be a romantic, yet somewhat valid counterpoint to reducing everything to its monetary value. However, You need to get paid for your work. So You made a sound decision. And saying goodbye to a family treasure may be sad and hard to do, but that's life, too. And maybe a Buddhist exercise in letting go of an attachment.....

Wow, tough one. Completely appreciate the line a professional needs to draw on the viability of a job versus the investment of time/effort/money, and what I think a lot of people don't realise is that it's not just the cost of replacement parts or a donor movement - it's all the hours it takes to track them down, all the extra hours of effort & cost of consumables to de-rust what's salvageable, etc. For me, that's the type of damage that becomes a pet project... either learning about watchmaking as I invest my passion & spare time into restoring it, or finding a different way to enjoy it (eg. wear it as a bracelet or display it in my home as a keepsake/collectable).

I think if you find condensation in your watch the very least you can do is pull the back off the watch and put it in a warm dry environment. Salt water is even more destructive because when it dries it will leave the salt behind so the watch will have to be serviced. Perhaps if you have salt water ingress it would be best to wash the watch out with fresh water then dry it and get it serviced as soon as possible.
@davidblock1464
@davidblock1464 Год назад
After rinsing with fresh water, would soaking in WD-40 or light oil be a good idea?
@allanrichards3752
@allanrichards3752 Год назад
@@davidblock1464 I would think if it is just fresh water condensation and you have dried the watch and it is still running well then you have probably got away with it. If it is salt water I could see how WD40 or any oil would prevent further corrosion but I am not sure how a watch repairer would respond to having to clean all the oil/WD40 off the watch. If you get it to a watch repairer quickly they can take the necessary action to get the salt out.

I decided to get the tranny fixed as buying another car would cost me even more, and it's been good ever since. You need think of every angle. I now have 10K into this car, including purchase price, and it would cost me twice that to even get a good used car that, who knows, might get me into the same situation again.. I've done this to several albeit much less expensive watches. A replacement movement using the original dial and hands and it's good as new. I for one never wear watches anywhere they may get water on them. I don't care how water resistant they claim to be.
@djdoo
@djdoo Год назад
First of all great video Stian! Second thank you for telling the truth about todays way of production and such... Third a question: Why did those watch making companies sell and advertise watches for sailing sport like this one that do not meet the requirements of water proofness? I mean it is called memosail and it was really expensive correct? I have a cheap new Timex watch here which I find very beautiful and paid 125€ for it (Waterbury chronograph model) and it was an expensive buy for me as a poor person so I would be very mad and sad if it becomes like this poor thing here. Kisses from Greece, Jim.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices Год назад
Hello Jim, thanks for watching! When the watch was made and advertised, it would be suitable for wearing when sailing. 50 years later and probably without too much servicing in between, the rubber gaskets will however have degraded and not providing a good seal. Additionally, over 50 years, the case will have gotten some bumps here and there, creating tiny spots of less tight fit between the parts. So while the watch was likely strongly water resistant when new, that doesn't mean it is decades later, unfortunately.

I suffer from the nostalgia gene. This vid filled me with an ennui that is hard to describe, but I'll get over it. I'm not so sure our disposable society will. Such a shame. How come that a Memosail, designed for sailing has that lot of water damage. Was it because it wasn't serviced for a long long time, or it never was tested for WR? Probalby when the owner had sent it directly to you, he could still enjoy the watch... Thanks for the video.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices Год назад
Thanks for watching! The watch was certainly fit for sailing when it was new some fifty years ago. But over five decades of likely infrequent servicing, the rubber gaskets lose their flexibility and the case gets a few dings and bumps. Additionally this is a chronograph with two more openings through the pushers for water to enter. Put together all of this leads to lower water resistance and certainly not enough to be doused with salt water as this one was... Had the owner been aware of this and thus either not used the watch while sailing or at least opened it up and cleaned it immediately, the watch would probably have been in working order.

great job as usual…unfortunately you bought the worse car you could, and the automatic gear box could be saved maybe with cleaning operations every 60,000 km, changing the lubricant…I am italian, but I do not suggest to anybody to buy fiat or Alfa Romeo, not more made in Italyi, especially the last one. 40 year ago they made the best you could buy, but after sold to fiat (midas king at the opposite), a totally disaster…I used them at work,unfortunately. I suggest you the japanse ones, for me the best.

He goes sailing with it and then it gets water damaged. Yet it has a sail boat on the case back... hum. LOL

*Gaskets and seals deteriorate, time wins always.* *_One reason Rolex changed its steel formulation was corrosion occurring over several decades which compromises the grooves or seats into which the seals are placed, especially the case back. The crown tube is also vulnerable._*

If they're too far gone I'll see if there's anything to be salvaged, otherwise they're going into the cylindrical archive...
