Before you complain at work and go to HR, watch this video first because the reason you are not getting results may be in your approach.
Will HR help me?
This is a question I get a lot when it comes to workplace conflict and bullying. People want to put in a complaint at work but they are not sure how to complain at work the right way - because there is a fear of retaliation - and it is real!
First, you need to know HR is not your friend, but that does not mean they cannot become your partner. Learning how to talk to human resources (HR) about a toxic workplace or when to share your complaints about your boss requires that you know how HR functions and what HR does.
From respect at work policies to whistleblowers, learning how to complain effectively at work will help reduce the fear that HR does not do anything, and reduce the risk of being fired when you do go to HR.

Have you ever had to address toxic behavior? I am wondering what you have found to be useful in these situations - drop you comments below and share your strategies to create a psychologically safe workplace

The safest bet is to consider your HR Department as you would your Police Department and not talk to either. Both are more harmful to your wellbeing than they are beneficial.

Well I am comfortable talking to both - although I feel more heard when I talk to the police … interesting

HR are basically corporate cops; their job is to protect the company from you. If you experience harrassment or discrimination at work, get a lawyer. Going to HR is basically giving the company time to find a way to cover their butts.

I do agree this has been the experience of many people, but not all. Having talked with many in the HR field, it is more complex than many people know

Hi Tammy! Great video. You have a lot of great steps that you share for people who are struggling with their co-workers in the workplace. You mentioned that HR pros may comment, so here I am :) Here is another great tip: HR helps with creating and enforcing policy. They are mediators, sometimes arbitrators and, like Catherine said, they are the neutral party. It is true, as you say, that we will ask you what you have done to fix the problem and we will provide tips on how to approach the person they are having issues with. The next thing I ask is, if the employee has tried to correct the issue, but it hasn't worked, have they talked to their supervisor? Supervisors are equipped with the tools to manage these types of issues, and they need to know what is going on in their department. However, if they are the problem, the next level is to talk to their supervisor's supervisor. HR steps in when all of the efforts have been tried and that is when investigations and mediations start. Now, everything gets weighed on severity, of course. The more the severe the issue, the quicker it will be escalated. To add to the myths, I do want to thank you for saying that the first myth is "false-ish". We are there to support the company, but we are also there to protect the employee and have a Code of Ethics that we must follow to make sure that we are protecting the employee ;) I do think that employees should look to other resources to help them with their workplace issues and I love that you have something to offer!

Thanks for the comments and contributions - as with all relationships, we sometimes find ourselves looking through very rigid rules and expectations, and if we can allow others to show up in different ways (other than the traditional HR is to be avoided) then we can really make an impact!

Its is my job to conduct myself in a professional manner. It is not my job to be a mother to a fellow employee to correct his behavior. Thats HR job.

It is your job if their behavior offends you. If you ask HR to speak on your behalf, you can’t complain when they don’t fix things. They are not as invested in your relational problems as you are - so naturally you are the best representative for what you want

Some organizations are like a POW camp, so going to HR is a waste of time, or at best, a roll of the dice/gamble. like the lady said, HR is to support the Organization not solve a employee's problems.

It is a sad reality that we still have to educate organizations on how to treat employees … and yes, sometimes HR cannot help us - in those cases we have to decide if we will stay or go

I've never felt comfortable going to HR because I always feel like I'm going to open a can of worms with issues. Unless it's a big issue to my work ethics and my mental health I will look for another job and quit.

I think you echo what many people feel and do in the workplace. Sometimes it is safer and easier to quit. What I have come to learn is the world is a small place and trouble follow so if possible, it may be beneficial to try and resolve an issue

Human resources department Does not work the way most people think Human resources is for the company. It has always been that way since the mid to late 1980 to now. Remember that

Yes many people have misconceptions around what HR can do. There are many good people in HR who want to do the right thing, but do not have the authority to do so

Unfortunately the lower level employees will not trust the people who are in human resources. If it goes on too long The trust factor is not going to be there. The employer may laugh at the report behind the employee back. Unfortunately

I would agree that this is true in some cases, especially if an issue has a long past. Once the trust is gone, it is difficult to rebuild
