@@A_Final_Hit Page and Clapton got clean way before that, in fact Clapton got Page into rehab, Clapton, Page, Jeff Beck, and Stevie Winwood were doing a tour in the early 80s called the Britain invasion tour and Page was so high he couldnt play and he was really skinny so Eric got him help.
@@ed52369 yes you are right apparently it was cocaine that Keith continued to use until 2006, and he quit cigarettes in 2019, he still has an occasional drink usually vodka and orange soda 🤢 🤮
He did. He always had at least one other player who could actually hang. While Keith futzed around with his open tuning riffs the other guy (mick Taylor, Ronnie wood, etc.) would actually handle the “complicated” parts lol
Keith had made the comment when hearing Jimmy had a new band and heard a couple of the tracks that were recorded (before the album came out). Richards had stated many times he liked the guys alright in Zep but not the music. Same goes for Pete Townsend, who always ripped on Zep music. Interesting thing is, Page had played on early Who and Stones albums as the producers didn't like the respective bands guitar playing. Add to that, the Who almost lost Entwhistle and Moon who were fed up with the WHo's infighting and almost joined what would become Zeppelin. In each case The Stones and The Who, were two of the biggest bands at the time, both getting knocked off the top of the mountain once Zep hit the scene. More than a few in the business have said the negative comments towards Zep's music was sour grapes and being a bie jelly.
@@dlewtweentorla1210 Tell us about something Townsend doesn’t rip on.. here’s the thing.. if it weren’t for the low ceiling on that tiny stage the who might never of been so blessed.. Keith could play drums with anyone and it would be a blast.. The destruction of equipment that fed the flames of rock and roll happened quite by accident. On the far other hand Jimmy Page quite strategically evolved rock music and was extremely powerful in the direction of rock shows.. you may be too young to remember when small venues turned into stadium festival seating.. it wasn’t a Neil Pert acoustically perfect setting in the beginning of rock shows.. I saw Bowie on a 12” wooden stage in a new concrete convention center for Diamond Dogs and he hated the sound.. he told us so.. the phenomenon of Loud to reach the nose bleed crowd (multi functional goal) was perfected by 4 sticks.. everyone else listened and followed along..
@@debmccorkle4845 I remember, your knowledge which I agree with completely, is such a breath of fresh air. Very few realize Jimmy's motivation beyond playing , from recording with so many different artists and styles, learning all he could about production and recording, and all at such a young age. Acquiring the knowledge, deciding to put a band together of like minded musicians that's loved music. Cheers !
Personal taste. Frank Zappa was amazing but I can't stand most of his music. Prince was perhaps the most talented musician in the last 100 years and while I like some of his songs, a lot of his stuff I don't like.
Yes, I've said the same about The Beatles until I realized people all don't have the same likes and dislikes as me. Zeppelin stole a lot of their music and I don't find myself fascinated by them like my teen years.
@@timfool Approximately 10 songs are in contention: Stairway to Heaven (court case won by Zep), Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Dazed and Confused, The Lemon Song, Bring it on Home, Since I've Been Loving You, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, Hats of to Roy Harper, In My Time of Dying and Boogie with Stu. "i don't think anybody steals anything; all of us borrow" --B.B. King
Good point that. Zep had a certain pride that they could "handle anything between the 4 of us" - but it would have helped if Plant could have played guitar (or keyboard) as well, to ease the load on the other 3. I wouldn't want anyone taking the bass over from JPJ, he was essential working with John Bonham as he did
@vicvega3614 theybstill ripped off more bands than anyone else ever. I'm jot saying they werent players. All 4 were top tier but I lose all the respect when I find out. How they they just robbed other artists blind. For multiple hits.
Richard’s can play Robert Johnson songs on an acoustic guitar and they sound great. Keith is and always was a great guitarist, he chooses to play simple riffs because they fit the groove of the song better. Keith is the driving force behind the sound of The Rolling Stones. No working guitarist in competing bands of the time thought he was anything but the sound of the Stones. Great rhythm guitarists that seldom play leads are crucial to keeping a solid groove.
Led Zeppelin fans think because a guitar riff is more complicated it makes it better, yet the most iconic guitar riffs in rock history are the most simple ones. Focusing on if the music actually sounds good is the actual purpose.
Richard's can do it too. It's a choice you make in the studio. It's not hard to play over your own track. You have to decide. Can I Replicant this live?. If you don't mind if the record and live are different, then go ahead. This isn't about skill.
I'm a pretty good one myself and that album did something for me bro, sorry you didn't have the same experience and I don't mean covers. I've never played one song off that album and never would.
Presence is filled with layers of masterful guitar passages, building and building to orgasmic solos! Almost impossible to play live, but if anyone can do it, Jimmy Page can!
Except the fact he has came up with a handful of some of the most iconic guitar riffs in rock history and is one of the most succeful songwriters with his partnership with Mick. But yeah other than that not much 🙄

@@JiMMY-my1ds Point taken. Nothing really to be gained from the comment. But there's a lesson that there's an element of politics in the music industry that not all are aware of. I respect your question brother btw
Everyone I've known who doesn't like LZ has poor taste in music or is tone deaf. Especially the "they stole all their songs" crowd. All of ya, get bent.
Yeah that's so overstated. Have the people who trot that line out actually listened to the original songs that Zeppelin 'stole'? They are basically entire new songs. 'Inspired by', at most.
Greta Van Fleet did a great job with LZ Highway Tune. Robert Plant said in an interview he thought they did a great job. Also that he "hated them " 🤣 because they were still so young. He wanted to go back to his youth too. He was pretty cool.
Keith Richards couldn't tie Jimmy's shoe laces. People don't realize the amount of work and time Jimmy put into Led Zeppelin!! Keith just showed up high and played, Jimmy was the engineer and showed up high and played!
Led Zeppelin is the best rock band there has ever been! They opened the curtain and let the blind see the sun. They invited the wheel. There manager is also a mountain mover!!
Regardless of his addiction........(and I'm not condoning) it gave Led Zepplin........Jimmy Page, ......he is brilliant......no other could pull this off.....he's the best...... it gave Led Zepplin an edge.........Jimmy Page is the best in my book.......and he will remain the best.......I am happy that he kicked the habbit.....not becoming a statistic.....the world of music would not be the same without this beautiful man.......most renowned......I love you Jimmy Page........❤
Even Brown or White dope couldn't help richards being a more creative guitar player. Guy opens his mouth when he's not able to do half of Page's work on stage.
Presense is one of my favorite LZ albums. Though both play guitar they couldn't be more different musicians. While Keith's rudimentary writing and playing style make the Stones what they are. Jimmy is the polar opposite with complex compositions and live performances.
This is a horrible taint on the thoughts of a bohemian.. someone so free as Keith.. who shines so much love into music.. who has embraced everything from the basement floor up.. someone who has the creds to pluperfect any music he enjoys.. to say this publicly.. well, it hurts me heart.. not because the mighty zep can’t withstand critics.. God knows that’s been done magnificently.. it’s just that my main man Keef here.. he’s showing his well deserved place in history and it smacks lilts of ethnocentric.. he is not too old because he has become a spirit in rock.. really his work will haunt the world as long as there are material bits to it.. it just makes the God Father of Rock look less invincible.. not to appreciate the iconic place in history Led Zeppelin holds.. Loud evolved well thanks to Jimmy & John.. thunderous rock took shape from the tiny mono footprint.. and this is what he has to say about it?
I saw The Rolling Stones live during their Steel Wheels tour. Behind the backdrop I could see two guitarist playing the whole time Keith and Ronnie were swinging their arms around and prancing around on stage. Many other people who have seen them before and after I saw them said the same thing. And when Keith does play guitar live he has his guitars tuned to an open tuning, just like you would do if you are using a bottleneck slide. Keith has no right to judge any other guitarist Especially Jimmy Page.
The Song Remains The Same, Kashmir and Achilles Last Stand all had alot of guitar layering in them in the studio. Live was another matter and Jimmy did the best he could. In 1977 at MSQ, Page performed all 3 songs with no layers at all and it was admirable. Yet, when I saw Page & Plant with full orchestra, the sounds you heard in The Song Remains The Same were staggering!
Keith.....you should have a lot of respect for Jimmy Page!!! GOAT You could learn everything from him when it comes to playing the guitar...and not just playing three cords on one 🎸
When I was a kid, I had a dream that Bill Wyman quit Rolling Stones. Band hadn't found a new bass guitarist yet. They had to go on stage. Keef strapped on both a guitar and a bass guitar. It wasn't even a double necked instrument. It was 2 single necked instruments strapped to the one musician. Keef worked so hard. He kept moving his hands back & forth between the 2 instruments. He didn't miss a note, but he was exhausted afterwards. He said it was too hard to do that night after night, and that they needed to find a bass guitarist ASAP. 😌💭 🎸🎸
Presence is still my favorite LZ album - I don't care what anyone has to say about it. When you begin with Achilles Last Stand, then end with Tea For One, how can any album of work be any more blissfull? It's the Dark Horse of LZ album's.
When I was 15, I bought LZ 1 right after its release. I bought every album after that as soon as they were available. I could feel the end coming. The clues were in the music. The band had changed and the audience had changed. The rock music scene had changed. Some of you will know what I mean.
I agree with Keith Richards at least as far as live performances go. Zepplin was one of those bands that definitely needed a second or third guitarist on stage when they performed live, and the lack of that extra guitar or two is noticeable on so many of the recordings of Live Zeppelin songs
The reason they spent so much time in studio per day is because they only had 18 days of studio time available. And they didn't want to delay the album release date by months. Si they took the window that they had.
Hey people, the ones critical Keith Richards I’m guessing a lot of you might be younger? I don’t know. I give Kieth credit for his honesty, I also realize that there was a lot of competition in the day. Is it possible Kieth just meant it wasn’t his kind of music? and we’re not getting it firsthand that’s for sure. Remember we’re all trying to make our lives work here. 😊💜
All the people arguing about which is a better guitar player are missing the more important point: These are two of the most successful guitar-riff-writers of all time. Nowadays, intermediate guitar players can learn to play most JP’s solos, but nobody is coming up with catchy guitar riffs like JP or Keith did consistently, album after album. That is the genius part IMO.
NOBODY is arguing over who the better guitar player is. nobody in their right mind would say richards is even close to the greatest guitarist of all time - JIMMY PAGE
All this hate towards Keith. He actually said that Jimmy is Led Zeppelin. He didn't care for Bonham's drumming and Plant's singing... Plant doesn't care for his singing style during this period, either. Keith and Jimmy are absolutely the same in one important and brilliant way. It's their genius ability to hear and layer guitar parts - melding the parts into one. By the way, they both have huge respect for one another as musicians.
I love the pic at the end with Ronnie Wood and Jimmy… although I was very surprised that Jimmy was smoking a cigarette, I was under the impression that he quit smoking around the same time he stopped drinking… although I guess when you’re in the company of notorious chain smokers I suppose it’s polite to partake if offered.
So what do you want to do led Zeppelin what is it you guys want to create. Anyone in the band: We want to recreate something from over 60 years ago and make it really sparkly and neat and good and refreshing and hard rocking. So you want to popularize the music is that what we're hearing. Anyone in led Zeppelin: Yes ,,, we like modern music and that's American music so we're going to try to make it sound like we are right there in the delta, of course we're not really from there but we're going to get you to think you are, is the best thing and so authentic,,
Imo Achilles last Stand is the greatest song they ever did, its fantastic. But I've never heard a decent live version of it. It needs a second and maybe even 3 guitarists to get the brilliance of the parts live, so unfortunately I have to agree with Keef
I was a huge fan of Led Zeppelin from their first album. I finally got to go to their concert in April of 1973 at the Atlanta stadium.I was really excited to attend and couldn’t wait to get there.I am sad to say I was terribly disappointed that it was the most awful concert I had ever attended at that time. I attended a concert in Atlanta at the Fox Theater in November of 1981,same scenario, all excited and happy to see the band. It turned out to be a horrible experience. The band was awful, very disappointed with the whole thing. That band was The Rolling Stones! I have been to many concerts over the years and saw some really great shows and bands, but these were 2 of my favorite bands and I was crushed and very disappointed with the performance they both gave.
Reading Richard’s book it is obvious that he has a lot of respect for Page despite not liking Zeppelin and he attributes their success solely to Page which just isn’t the case. All four of those guys were innovators and it took the chemistry of all of them to make the music they did. That being said, Presence is the only album that is entirely guitar centered throughout with Jones not playing anything other than bass.. incredible bass, but none of his keyboard work that is found throughout the rest of the catalog.
I kind of agree with Keith Richards, there's times I would watch Page live and he was seriously overworked, especially watching him do Achilles at Knebworth, I mean you talk about a sweaty workout
