La Mira Ra house, located in the South of France, epitomizes the harmonious fusion of Mediterranean wild nature and minimalist contemporary architecture.
This architectural gem, completed between 2015 and 2017 by Pierre Minassian and his team, offers an intimate engagement with the sea while seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings.
The project's design was deeply influenced by two key principles: environmental integration and cohabitation with the local landscape.
Situated on a classified site, the house adheres to the mandate of using local stone in its construction, blending this requirement with the architect's appreciation for raw concrete. This combination results in a poetic interplay between the materials.
The local stone envelopes the exterior of the house, harmonizing with the rocky terrain through its earthy palette and warm reflections of sunlight.
Inside, raw concrete creates a serene and understated atmosphere, with its smooth surfaces capturing the light at sunset and showcasing their natural quirks and irregularities.
The house's layout follows the natural slope of the site, ensuring unobstructed views for the surrounding villagers and orienting the home towards the breathtaking sea vista.
The upper level, housing the bedrooms, subtly emerges from the ground, split by a discreet staircase leading to a patio that marks the entrance.
Positioned below eye level, the entrance patio provides initial privacy from passersby, inviting visitors into the home's intimate space.
The lower level, containing the master bedroom, living room, and kitchen, remains hidden from view, opening towards the sea with a fully glazed facade.
The floor extends outward, creating a terrace that merges indoor and outdoor living spaces, allowing the living room and kitchen to transform into an airy summer retreat shielded from the sun but open to the fresh sea air.
This design, coupled with natural drafts facilitated by the entrance patio, creates an efficient natural cooling system.
Solar protection is achieved through strategically placed full-height wooden louvers. Fixed louvers along the south-facing corridor provide constant filtration of sunlight and privacy,
while sliding shutters protect the northeast-oriented bedrooms. The lower level features louvers that can retract to disappear from view.
Additionally, the green roof offers thermal insulation and further integrates the house into its natural setting when viewed from above.
The outdoor spaces enhance the house's integration with its environment, featuring a pathway that begins at the forecourt, winds around the house and pool, and disperses into a desert garden.
This garden proudly displays a variety of local flora, celebrating the region's botanical diversity. La Mira Ra house is a testament to thoughtful design that respects and elevates its natural surroundings while providing a tranquil and private sanctuary for its inhabitants.
