The accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere determines what global temperature is reached. So, just like a braking distance, future warming is determined by global emissions today, the year we start emission reductions, and the year we achieve net zero. The goal of climate policy is no longer up for debate: we have to reduce global emissions to net zero. We just need to decide when and how fast.
This lecture was recorded by Myles Allen on 26 September 2023 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London
Myles is the Frank Jackson Foundation Professor of the Environment.
He has contributed extensively to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), including as Coordinating Lead Author for the 2018 IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C. He has published extensively on how human and natural influences on climate contribute to observed climate change and extreme weather risk, and the implications for adaptation and mitigation policy.

Thank you for the lecture. Myles Allen's passion and concerns are infectious. I am a climate activist/campaigner -- I found his arguments very useful for developing our campaign strategy and tactics. Look forward to the next lecture.

The people that will be buying 15 year old diesel cars in 2030 are poor people that need a car. This fellow, like most academics and politicians are clueless about how the 70% live. As they say in the southern US, "the nerve of some peoples children". Im shacking my head. 7 years from now (2030) we will only be poorer.

@@fullmontyuk Of course. You only need to double the grid, so it can carry the load. Easy peasy.

@@fullmontyuk sad sad sad . Our Govt is still buying Mercedes -Benz or Renault to enable those under our ACC scheme (mainly manly =males incapacitated through Accident) to go Freedom Camping with all theit necessary gear and room to sleep two at least inside).

Poor people don’t buy cars, they walk, they bike, they take public transit. No one should be buying cars. Single occupancy vehicles are an epic waste of energy and not a transportation solution. Don’t use ‘poverty’ as an excuse

What we’ll be arguing over…. How wonderful to have a clear “plug-in hybrid “ driver … the consumption once we get onto the motorway wasn’t that different ANYWAY”

Disappointed that justification of range anxiety is here presented as valid. People go the length of the country in entirely electric cars without issue these days and ignoring that reality is disingenuous.
