Since it's a WiiU, if you haven't already, I recommend Xenoblade Chronicles X. New L.A. is one of the towniest JRPG towns I've ever seen. Stuff changes there after almost every side mission you do. The music is unbearably hip. The story is unbridled mecha anime nonsense. Best of all though, eventually you can fly.
Thor, I don't know if you'll ever see this but I want you to know that you are such an example for me in terms of your writing and sense of humor. I'm edging closer to 30 now, which (for me) means that most of the RU-vid people that I used to love don't hit me the same way anymore or have in some way done something that has made me uncomfortable watching them. Hoever everytime I come back to you, you hit me with such honesty and fun and personality that I can't help but feel just as appreciative of you as I did years ago. Bootleg carts in the 90s were such a big deal in Europe because buying official releases from game stores had absolutely insanely high prices and Nintendo had the highest by far. In some cases some of the biggest Nintendo games had a delayed Europe release by months or even years, sometimes there was barely enough stock to meet demand and it would take months to be replenished. Due to games also being insanely valuable on the second hand market, the rental retailers constantly had games stolen from them, meaning they stocked only a few copies of each game at a time. Carrying around a bag full of valuable official Gameboy games was a great way to have your stuff stolen in a time where people almost never carried expensive electronics on their person unless you were a professional photographer or cameraman, so carrying only a cheap multicart in your Gameboy stuffed in your pocket was a smart way to avoid this.
Pretty sure that also the same case in South American countries, only that it happens 10 years later due to how rare new consoles can be in that region
No one bought Nintendo stuff in Europe, the Gameboy was an exception and it was trendy. Though we went from Sega to Sony. Americans were busy with Mario but the kids here loved Sonic (before the PS1). Nintendo only properly entered the mainstream market when the Wii launched as prices were more normalized and they finally started marketing. No one I know ever owned an N64, Gamecube, etc including myself.
@@Manic_Panic Agreed, it's kinda frustrating how nintendo focused a lot of youtube gaming coverage is. I had one friend with a SNES and he had so few games because even back then they were like £70. I had an Amiga and a Megadrive during that era although I had way more amiga games due to piracy and the fact that my parents still thought MD games were expensive even thought they were cheaper than SNES ones. 32 bit era was PS1 all the way, as sample my year of secondary school like 2 kids had N64's and everyone else had PS1's. I remember when FFVII came out everybody was talking about it at school. I even remember talking about it with friends on the train to school and some random dude started talking to us about it. Don't get me wrong though the PS1 hit at that exact era as a teenager where nintendo was seen as 'kids stuff' and was seen as the more adult console which definitely pushed insecure teenage me towards it. With resident evil, gran turismo, wipeout, tekken, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, MGS etc it definitely felt more mature to teenage me. Not to take away from Nintendo as I probably would've enjoyed the N64 but honestly even now if you asked me to choose I'd take the PS1 every time. Funnily my first mainstream nintendo console is the switch and alongside my gaming pc I've got most stuff covered. If you viewed history through american gaming youtubers you'd think that the N64 was the top seller with all killer and no filler. Also that the PS1 was just full of Janky shovelware that has aged poorly. It does feel like that for the PS2/GC/Xbox era too. Where there seems to be so much praise for the GC and the PS2 (outside of notable massive titles) is just a shovelware machine and the Xbox is just LOL AMERICA HALO CONSOLE.
Man, the B-roll footage was *perfect* this time around. Vietnamese Crystal, the infamous Emerald-Jade bootleg AND that PETA parody game. I grew up with an Emerald bootleg cart and I think my english still hasn't recovered. (and even as a kid in the age where 3D graphics merely existing was cool af, I thought both Colosseum and Gale of Darkness had incredibly slow and unfun battles - I never ended up finishing that postgame 100-battle challenge area. Seeing realistically sized Wailords in the underground city area was cool though)
I used to love Xd gale of darkness as a kid. I thought the style and “darker” tone felt so cool it was a game my dad played with me and helped me in it so it’s always gonna have some good memories. I’m glad I still have my copy complete in box it’s worth a little money now. People always talk about colosseum over gale of darkness though
Colosseum is darker and thus feels more representative of the era. XD is the better game though. Nobody agrees with me, but I think Miror B's Battle Theme is better in XD.
I' happy to see the DS Sims game even tangentially mentioned. That game is such a strange and wonderful gem. My brother and I never played a Sims game growing up, so that game colored our entire Sims Experience.
One of my favorite childhood games, cool to see you cover it. It has such a darker tone and atmosphere to the main series, and the battles are a lot more challenging. Plus that music…so good!
I remember my older brother getting Ho-oh in this game. Where you had to capture all shadow pokemon/purify them then do the mount battle mode and beat all 100 trainers.
It was such a struggle but that final fight with Eagen’s Kyocera and Groudon made it worth it. Did the purifying first when I was 15 and felt so accomplished to receive Ho-Oh after Mt. Battle. Chipped away at it day by day. Fun times!
when I grew up in germany, we all had like all the consoles? it was mo war between sega and nintendo, and later playstation. it was just like, what can your parents afford and if you had a nintendo some rando cousin will have a sega and you would be jelly because of some game that you liked but couldn't have. So much of gaming history as told by american gamers feels very much unrelated to my experience as a european

Pokemon Colosseum and XD holds a special place in my heart. Before the 3DS and Switch, this was our first expereince to a 3D RPG Pokemon game. Colosseum having a different story was what blew me away. Yeah, the double battles can get old fast and it doesn't mess around with difficulty, but I can forgive those faults because it separates itself from the GBA games. I still own both games and I remember replaying them for nostalgia sakes.

When we reach the point where it's been so many games that I honestly as of now would not be mad if we tried to make pokemon be serious again. There was something interesting about having a protagonist who was a part of an evil group but then defected and was doing his own thing. Not every single pokemon story has to be and then some kid decided they wanted to become the best like no one ever was and that's basically the non-existent plot. Oh and there's an occasional evil group that's just there but even they are just as pathetic and all this leads into the same tired road of beating a bunch of gym leaders then stopping a legendary from Going Out to control beating the elite four and finally there's a non-existent post-game that isn't even that good......God do I miss meaningful post games and Gen 5 and Gen 2. And by this point, I want these guys to grow with their audience through the GAMES and ANIME, not just the manga and spin offs.

It's so nice to see recognition of this game. I had been playing Pokemon since I was 13, but I had only gotten around to playing Colosseum about a year and a half ago. I am not exaggerating when I say it might legitimately be a contender for my favorite Pokemon game of all time, beating out Gen 4 and 5 easily. The region was fantastic, every location was memorable, the music was great, and the difficulty was just enough to be engaging without making it all too grindy, unless you're going for the Ho-Oh unlock with all purified Pokemon and beating 100 floors of Mt Battle. I love the battles just because the camerawork made it actually feel like it was supposed to be a spectacle, each Pokemon having its own set of animations, somehow still way beyond what Nintendo gives us even now, almost 20 years later. The game was infinitely charming to me, and made me remember why I loved Pokemon so much.
It's always funny to me to see videos talking about Europe as it reminds me how very different things were from country to country. Sweden and the Netherlands are not far apart, but we were absolutely Nintendo central back in my days- Game & Watch, NES, Game Boy, SNES, they were expensive but they were absolutely here: Mario's our boy. Can't deny that it's interesting hearing a perspective in 'Tendo from those who didn't grow up with them though, so I encourage your new arc. Afraid I can't say much about this game in particular though- I sadly lapsed after the N64 and went for the PS2 over the Gamecube, but in my defense? When you need parents to fund your purchase, it's a hell of a lot easier to tell them the game machine can also play DVD movies. So while I had played the early Game Boy games, I got nothing as far as this game goes.

the combat not being you mashing A all the time adds some mighty big appeal to this for me, ngl I played ff7 for the first time recently, and I gotta fess up, as nice as its pre renders and music can be, it's combat being smeared 'Mash x' energy right up until endgame made it a lot less enjoyable when compared to the other ffs I've played, like, even the reportedly blander ones like X, XIII and even I were a lot more fun for me due to them actually asking you to do stuff in combat not really a poke fan, but I might check this out, mebe it'll finally give me inroads with the folks I know who are into pokemon also looking forward to the nintendo arc! was largely excluded from nintendo franchises growing up, so when I eventually became a functioning adult with cash on hand, I had none of the nostalgic fascination that seems to be the main driving force between bigguns like mario and zelda, so I've always struggled with liking their things (metroid aside) will be cool to see someone similarly without that interest looking at their stuff

Some reasons for this game odd design, it was made by a bunch of ex Dragon Quest developers, in a very short time for a new console, so a lot was probably just thrown there without much questioning. I love it though, this game little intricacies and weird corners always stood out and kind of stayed with me, especially that adventure game esque type of fell because of the Dragon Quest background.
I love Colosseum, I definitely gravitated toward it as a teenage when it came out because "Edgy Cool" phase, but the dusty crunky aesthetic of the game stuck with me and I've always fondly remembered it and Gale of Darkness. Been meaning to do a playthrough of it lately as I haven't done so in many years... when I decided to do the challenge to get Ho-oh OTL (I got it, but oof that 100 battle challenge felt like it took months as a teenager).
I really like video game youtubers like you. It feels like you're sitting across the table from your audience casually giving your thoughts on a game with some deeper introspection on them peppered in, and not like I'm watching a History Channel documentary narrated by a boring host.

I JUST PLAYED this last year. I only really like the Gameboy/Color versions of Gen 1 and 2 they are the only ones with the pokemon FEEL I enjoy. But I picked this one up due to the staff having the most in common with those titles. The team changed a lot after this across all pokemon games. And I really enjoyed this game, it was fresh but captured that feeling old GB pokemon did somehow. I love it.
So I always wanted to play this and XD growing up but looking at the moment to moment gameplay, I think I missed the boat on both of them. But at the same time, I can tell that the vibes are immaculate. Maybe I'll play them one day, but I'm in no hurry
Colosseum was one of my favorite games as a kid. I easily put 300 hours into it, but I never beat it. It happens to be tied to one of the most traumatic gaming moments of my life. Growing up with multiple consoles meant wall outlet space was scarce so I had my Gamecube hooked up to outlet that happened to be powered by a lightswitch. One day as I was nearing the top level of Mt. Battle with my fully level 100 team I decided to save. At that exact moment my grandmother walked into the room and said "Why is this light switch on?" and without hesitation flipped the switch off. My screen went black. When I turned my Gamecube back on my memory card had been corrupted and I lost all of my progress (along with my Starfox Assault data). Could never bring myself to play Colosseum again, but after this video maybe it's time.
Finally the dutch perspective lmao, but fr I always thought it was weird how popular nintendo was in america cause there was no movement for it over here, 99% of people had a playstation till the xbox 360 came out and then 1 person I knew had a Wii and then later in the 7 gen playstation again for everybody, likely due to the red ring, I mean obviously annecdotal but for the longest time the only nintendo game i had played was Dino City on the snes 1 time, on the other hand handheld, EVERYONE had a DS so for the longest time that was my main connection Nintendo for me and almost every person I knew.
Sheesh, I bought so many of those bootleg kinder suprise eggs with Mario on the wrapper back then here in Czechia… and never found any Marios in them! There’s still a box of shame somewhere at my parents’ full of the broken promise egg yolks.
I lived in Den Haag from 1996 to 2004 and I started gaming on the OG Gameboy but I remember passing me those hacked Pokémon cartridges and having a blast with them.
pokemon colosseum has such a special place in my heart. every time a new console pokemon game releases, i can't help but compare their look and feel to colosseum and gale of darkness and lament over how ugly and soulless they are in comparison. it'd be nice to return to this darker style of pokemon game, i thought it was so cool as a kid and i still do. the protagonist's character design goes hard as hell
as a person that also did not grow up with the Nintendo first party video game crash I resonate a lot with your videos, I grew up in south America and we also had a ton of bootleg video games so to me Nintendo didnt mean much until I learned about it later in my life and I would also have access to many bootleg games that were mostly on my ps1. I think its very interesting and cool how even if we were both in 2 different parts of the world we both grew up with a similar gaming culture.
Good to see a positive retrospective on this game when it seems in fashion to bash it these days. It has a lot of mechanical problems but the industrial, gritty and unsafe atmosphere this game brings to Pokémon is undeniably cool and different
