That's the biggest reason why people who modify their cars should actually know enough about working on cars, that way they have a good understanding when something (beyond their ability) goes wrong and they seek out help. I know around where I live these custom shops always sell people on performance mods, but when something inevitably goes wrong, often times you'll see the car on CL / Facebook because the person can't figure out what went wrong, or the shops they went to have no clue what modifications were made and it'd cost thousands just to diagnose.

Especially on a N* they are famous for hating any kind of tuning. Hell there was a team that spent about a decade trying to make a bolt on Supercharger kit for the N* after 10 years they were able to get the ECU to tolerate 2 psi of boost before it shit the bed...the next week GM announced the factory SS 4.4 they abandoned the project the next day

I love how Car Wizard is humble with what his shop can deliver. He knows when to send it to a tuning shop or a custom shop because they do things he won't on a regular basis. By the same token him and his team can work on a vast array of vehicles, rebuild and service them that those shops can't do.

I have an STS-V. 😁 Stealth Blue on Titanium. The Spectre intake bolts right on and I’m not sure why the wiring was that way. Seems like just an improper installation but odd because it essentially bolts right in. Not much to mess up. Also, if this has gutted cats, the tuning may have been an attempt to turn 02’s to always ready in order to omit the constant engine light that will always illuminate. If they aren’t already there, the owner should join Cadillac STS-V Owners on Facebook. I’m an admin and we’re very helpful with issues like this.

I can't speak for that STS-V, but I have a STS-V; the engine and the car is the exact opposite of what you described. It is a highly refined hand-built motor with a ton of features and high end materials used throughout the interior. Read any article on a STS-V and that is the consensus. The STS-V, took a completely different approach in V form than the CTS-V. From the factory, the car is virtually silent despite having 469 horses under the hood.

There are excellent tuning shops out there that really know what they’re doing but finding them is really hard. Tuning a car is huge commitment and it comes with issues no matter who does it but you have to find a good tuner and when issues occur you take it back to that same tuner to fix it since he did the tune and he knows what he did. I have a 23 ct4v blackwing and I’ve been thinking about a tune since I got it but this video right here is the living proof why I will never do it…may work great at first but always comes with issues down the road and I guess that’s fine if you have that guy that knows near by all the time…that being said I love your videos. Always great content. Don’t know how I came across you channel but it’s really awesome.

I'm in a similar spot where after college I came back and continued working as a machinist under an older master here that I worked for high school along side working as a mechanic/fabricator for my dad's propane company and the personal collections of him and his friends (he and his friends are great mechanics but when you have so many cars/trucks you run out of time and just want to experience them). All that mixed with teenage years of building custom rally cars/projects with whatever we had laying around and being obsessed with computers/electronics for as long as I can remember has resulted in me being able to handle pretty much anything for my projects. I'm always caught off guard or confused when I go to nearly any auto forum and every time someone asks a question about a piece or build they just get tons of responses saying it'll cost a fortune in labor and shop fees...something I've never payed once. I guess most the people on those forums are the type that just buy stuff and pay someone else so they can add a line of text to their signature while actually knowing next to nothing about the car/truck.

My uncle's 2001 BMW 750IL. While chasing down Transmission Failsafe and Canbus panic, I looked under the carpet and found 1" of water. EKAT Catalytic Converter Heater Controller was completely destroyed and was backfeeding into the Canbus system because BMW didn't put a FUSE on it. Dried it out and ended up building a relocation kit to move the EKAT to the trunk give it proper fused power from an empty slot in the trunk fuse box. The under carpet fuse box was trashes as well, so it got replaced. A few months later, it's back with more electrical gremlins. More water under the carpet and the new box I put in was beyond saving. Pull down the headliner and the sunroof drains fall off. Fixed them with some vinyl tubing and hose clamps, adding enough for strain relief, but it was only the start. Everything under the carpet was "painted" green from copper oxide and I REALLY don't want to mess with it again. Cut out the corroded stuff, splice in new wire as needed and add new terminals. Not the OE BMW stuff that's $15 a piece and corrodes if you look at it funny. Now it has ring terminals with adhesive lined heat shrink to make it as impenetrable as possible. Since the box was shot and the studs and nuts were about to seize together like it did on my 97 Expedtion (firewall fuses...) , I drew up a brand new one in Paint in 45 minutes. Made a few adjustments to get rid of the goofy bi-level setup and put it all on a single plane. Scaled it to match the original and printed it out actual size as a machining template, accurate to 0.010". Studs are Stainless Steel carriage bolts locked into square holes in the top layer of the polyethylene base (household cutting boards), followed by 2 more layers as a backing plate. It's all stitched together via Plastic Welding along the perimeter and in 2 rows near the middle to make it one solid rigid piece. Add a stainless steel bus bar and it works like stock. Not the first time I made one, but it's definitely the best one I've made.

Given the drain plug (looks aftermarket and not a 4L60 pan) on that 700 R4, I'd say that trans has been messed with before. There is a good chance that someone put a shift kit in it and removed the pump for the boost valve mods and didn't use the newer washers on the pump bolts, which will give you a false diagnosis on the leak. I've seen it happen and know some guys use RTV on them and the vent crossover in the pump for that reason. The shift kits jack up the line pressure under driving conditions, which is why you'll have a leak after a drive but it stops when sitting at idle. The stator shaft that retains the bushing is pretty cheap with a new bushing installed (better off doing both) if that actually is the problem though. I somehow knew you'd have a lathe....

I lost an 05 CTS-V to a shop working on it and fuckin me over, took it to another and wouldn't pay for the billl because it was OUTRAGEOUS and end up surrendered the vehicle to them. Found out from a friend two months later they wanted the motor (was built) on top of being a V . Long story short lol, KNOW WHAT YOU OWN, when people talk to you about your vehicle know what they're saying. NOT AT ALL KNOCKING OR BASHING SHOP'S OR THIS VIDEO. Just stating my experience. I wouldn't have any questions with taking my vehicle to this shop. Good video guy's.

I’ve had to make many custom tools, like: A set of wrenches to adjust the valves on my Benzs engine. A socket to torque the locking hub bearing rings on a early 90s Tracker. A socket to open up the valve caps on the shops air compressor. An odd length socket to torque the headbolts on a Subaru while the block was still in the car. Had to bend several box end wrenches to fit different distributors over the years. Made electrical connector de-pinning tools out of the spring bars from wiper blades. A power tester, made out of a cigarette lighter plug, alligator clip, inline fuse holder, and a voltmeter probe (great for testing if a blower motor is burnt out or testing starter solenoids) During my tech school training, part of the class was machining a hammer out of aluminum, with a brass and 2 plastic faces. Several “helping hands” out of bent coat hangers and alligator clips to hold wires together while I soldered them.

The 3.6 in the cts is pretty smooth power. Trick is you have to change oil every 3k miles and the pcv every 5th oil change. If not the passenger side of the engine sludges up, tensioners slow, timing goes out, phasers go out. 5 w 25 mobile 1 every 3k miles. Engine burns about 2 qts per 3000k miles as well.

Nothing wrong with the LC3 engine on these. They are damn near bulletproof. It’s not like your old Northstar from the 90s or early 00s.

I had an 06 Cadillac STS and the ECM somehow got fried, possibly from a bad battery jump or something...It was showing all the same symptoms as this STS. I ended up taking it to Midas and they ended up replacing the whole ECM for $1300!

I'd rather someone squat on the engine and pinch off a large loaf on my intake than have them leave a bunch of nasty looking crimp connectors and a lack of elegant soldering contained by heat shrink tubing. The whole "Tune Trend" is disappointing as well. Some kid has a J.C. Whitney $19.95 gadget with a RU-vid video in Russian, then declares he's a tuner. They never document, never able to reverse what they did or explain why they did it -- 'Just thought we'd try poke around in the ECM.' Back in the day, when I tuned a car, it was clear to all what I had done by sight and by sound. My specialty was the 327 - 325 Chevy engine. Flip the top of the air cleaner over and you get at least 33.5 hp at sea level, an Army Trix sound and a moan like it's coming from a, well... just a long deep lustful moan. Why you'd want to, I haven't a clue, but you can reverse that tune while the traffic light is turning green. Pro Tip: Don't drop the wingnut down the Rochester!

I guess if you're working on a Chev engine with a Rochester at least you don't have to worry if the 10mm ended up in there.

The butt connectors were ugly. Butt connectors are better than ordering though. Soldering can cause a resistance change in the wiring. When you're talking about a sensitive sensor like a MAF, butt connectors are ideal. However, there are better and smaller connectors you can use and can be installed a lot cleaner.

Older subarus have 2 places to put the hood prop, and my Volvo 240 also has the service position. The funny thing is it’s always the cars that never need any fixing that have the convenient service position.

We have a w203 Mercedes with the om646 cdi and same fault code as the V. Car came in for replacement turbo ( destroyed following (age and) overboost caused by map sensor having a hole in it, caused by badly fitting engine cover! So ecu was seeing less boost then it was delivering. Did everything for a new turbo chra swap, cleaned everything up, new map sensor and now we have p0069. Suspect a bad new sensor so swapped a known good one off another running Mercedes, same code. Traced the wiring to the ecu and probed the offending wires, no extra resistance than what you'd expect. Cleaned the earth's and resistance tested them on that side of car, all seemed fine. So yeah either ecu has decided to have an issue or there is something else going on. Get the code as soon as the ignition is on, so not an adaption (of vnt controller) issue. Puzzled :/

One of the reasons I got into cars and fixing them myself was because after a wreck I needed control arms replaced on my miata, a shop replaced them all and charged me 1800.. yeah I know it's too much for a Miata, but I was 18 and I was saving up so long to get it and o ly had it for a couple months. After I got it back, Everytime I shifted I heard metal on metal almost like a shotgun pump as the car rocked or moved. I was so scared thinking I'll have problems forever, I took it back and told them about the noise. They told me everything's fine and they can't replicate the noise.. I took it to an actual dealer and they said whoever did the work finger tightened all of the control arm bolts and that's why everything was shaking. Ever since then I try to at least fix what I can or learn what work will be needed before trusting a shop.
