Iron Butterfly said the name of the song was originally " In the Garden of Eden" but they were so stoned, it came out "In a gada davida". So they stuck with that name on the album. True story ! A 60's survivor. Mike from Boston. R.I.P. Allan Jan. 2021

The original was called Ina Gada De Vida, but it was only named that because the main guy was drunk while recording it. He was trying to say In the Garden of Eden; what we end up with is soooooo much better. Plus this song was famous on the radio because the original cut 16 minutes long and disc jockies loved because they could take a bathroom break and eat something.

Has to listen to it to appreciate Doug Ingle and the rest of the band. It had a very long drum solo, and was loosely based that In a Gadda da vida meant "in the garden of Eden". It covered one side of an LP, 17 minutes 4 seconds. As a kid, that was the first album I had ever bought.

Originally the song was "In the Garden of Eden" but Iron Buttery Fly got stoned before a concert and played this song saying "In a gadda da vida" and the crowd loved it so they changed the name and lyrics! Yes the drum solo is awesome and this song takes the whole side on an LP!

Back in 1966/67 (somewhere in that time frame) I would walk about 1/3 of a mile across desert to the radio site I was stationed at in California, and at about 11pm every night Wolfman Jack would come on KRLA Los Angeles and play "In a gadda da-vida" ... That had to be in 1968 at least for the song to get any airplay because the song was not released until 1968 on their 2nd album, but the band had been playing it before their 1st album came out. Soon after release, the short version of the song was getting airplay, and the album with the long version was becoming the most coveted album to have. This song started the "long version" trend that several other bands did, and they became some of the most played songs at parties or personal enjoyment. The Chambers Brothers - Time has Come Today, Rare Earth - Get Ready, Allman Brothers - Whipping Post and Mountain Jam, Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain, and some took up an entire album side. Then Rock Operas with multiple songs that blended into the next. Yes, this song really did start something. Thanks for your memory. I was there too.

There is a certain freshness to the fact that you've never heard some of these request and have to create from it. You are a very good musician and I can't help but wonder what it would change in your playing to hear a lot of these great classics. The song lyrics were actually "In the Garden of Eden" but it morphed into "in a gadda da vida". I'm sure you've found this out by now.
