This product works even better if you use the flat side of the grinding wheel. By using the radius of the wheel as you did, you put a convex curve in the cutting edge.

When switching to the other flute, rotate away from the grinder wheel and pull out of base. Use the jam nut to keep the length the same for both flutes. 59° is right for most drills. Thanks

I still see where this guy still doesn't pay attention to his comments. He's still full of it. I use to watch his channel but he had to many commercials and never paid attention to his comments.

The General model I'm looking at online at Home Despot says it's USA made.

This should be using the flat side of the wheel not the curved front.

looks like a lot of pressure to force it to cut. your setup is not correct
@dennisrech9149

These sharpeners work as well as anything I have tried. You will get a more correct angle if you position the bit so that the angle matches the angle on the stone. The finger that sits in the flute will guide the angle of the cut. Move the bit a little back and forth until they match perfectly. I have mine mounted on a milling machine bed and a grinding wheel in the spindle so I can crank the x axis in tiny amounts and get a perfect edge. Takes 15 seconds per drill after you get the hang of it.

I've had and use the US General brand since the 80's. It works.

I absolutely love this tool seriously I got it off Craigslist used for like five bucks I cannot tell you how much money it saved I've brought every single freaking bad drill bit back to life absolutely amazing nice to see you doing a video on it

The old Bulldog twist drill sharpener clone. Lance needs to dress his grinding wheels. Remember folks, dress for success! I picked up a US General one of those at an estate sale for peanuts. It's OK for doing the initial grind on a really beat bit. It'll get you even cutting edges. It's still nice to split the point though.

I only get the cheapest pakistan drills .. they are more than enough if u know how to sharpen them .. Tools like this are a ripoff scam .. All you need is knowledge and a 20 dollar bench grinder

congratulatoins on being THE ONLY person on utube using this tool correctlly, this tool has been known previously [ many years ago ] as the general 825 and the picador no 9, the instructions that came with those tools advised taking light strokes on the side face of the grinding wheel, i suspect like me you where taught to never use the side face of a grinding wheel, and that no means no, not "light strokes or just a litle bit. you where taught well and remebered the lesson. Respect

Your bit extends too far, 1/16" overhang past the locator is all you need and use the flat side of the wheel it works fine

For the first eight months of my engineering training I spent most of my time in the grinding room sharpening drills with various point geometry and shapes for different materials That was thirty odd years ago and still second nature, there is nothing better than practice

Yeah sharpening tools is a bit of an art. You can get in touch with your cunning side then.

I got plenty of practice but Eight Months of just drill bit sharpening would be considered torture. I started off with larger ones (over 2 inches) the smaller they are, the trickier it is to get symmetrical.

I'm surprised you had bad luck with the drill doctor
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 2 года назад
I have a Drill Doctor. I suppose it works. It's not worth the time it takes to use though. I don't even use my Bulldog like is shown here too often. Usually I'll just freehand it. The real trick is dressing your grinding wheel. Trying to use a rounded over glazed and loaded up wheel is not a recipe for success. Sharp wheels make for sharp tools.

I bought the same general sharpener a year or two ago,because it reminded me of the industrial sharpener in the first shop I started out in.Haven't used it yet tho.I bought some parts master cryobits, and they are impressive. Think it's a Texas based company slim.Its worth a look.

Purchased from Harbor Freight,They are not manufactured in Mexico, most of them are from China. In my case, I have a snap-on Bluepoint, the materials are of better quality for what you pay.

And grinding the proper angle on the end of those drill bits will make a huge difference most common drills that I have are 59 anyway you'll figure it out but it does make a big difference
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 2 года назад
I don't think the angle is all that critical. You have a few degrees you can be either way. What is critical is having the cutting edges over the heels and having the cutting edges the same lengths. When you look at a twist drill end on the cutting edges should be parallel to each other. There's pictures on the web of drill bit geometry that should be studied. The truth is always in the drilling. You'll know when you've got it.
