This was the exact kind of nonstop abuse I got from a now former best friend. I took that denigrating treatment for decades. I now have a three strikes rule. If they ignore me or put me down when I explain how that's not acceptable, they're gone.

The other problem is that jokes at others expenses is very prevalent in sitcoms and other media and so it’s made acceptable but it tears away at relationships, even if your person isn’t exactly a narcissist

My wife told me she cheated on me and got pregnant with twins. She said she met a guy at the beach on her birthday and cheated on me. My wife then said she wants a divorce then says we were not meant to be to be together. Then proceeds to berate me and call me names. The next day tells me it was just a joke and it was a prank. Sorry that is not a joke and I will be filing for divorce

Even if a popular comedian tells personal jokes on someone which that person does not feel comfortable with, he/she/they still should rethink what they said. That's basic manner right there. Disturbingly this is getting absent nowadays.

a guy I took as a close buddy made a statement that" no matter how small anyone offends him, he won't forgive but retaliate in double doses." then I responded do you expect the same treatment if you unknowingly offended someone? his response was "no but but but but he doesn't subscribe to turning the other cheek" I rolled my eyes and knew that's a huge red flag.

This was pretty much my entire childhood treatment from my family. For example when I was a teenager I was definitely exploring the use of curse words. My family would get on me about it so I curbed it. Then one day I said something serious and my sister goes “Don’t you mean ‘and shit?’” When I got mad because I was actually trying to make a serious point her and my dad just got on me because I “couldn’t take a joke”. Or the “jokes” about bad stuff I didn’t do later being used as reasons to deny me stuff. Glad I’m no contact with them now.

My narc mother would always make comments to everyone that was insulting. Then say “I’m just kidding! I swear, nobody understands my sense of humor!” The truth is, this woman had no idea what actual humor was. She has actually fake laughed in front of me before, and it was a very disturbing site.

My muther does the same. Once I started seeing it, it was incredibly alarming. Fake laughing at the wrong times... Laughing at moments in movies at the very awkward moments, asking inane questions about the plot, joking at someone else's expense, and taking little to no accountability for her behavior. I get you.

It's what humour in the hands of the sensless ascribe. Be it for self-validation or demeaning others. When a narcissistic ever self-sympathizes it's usually a ploy or act of passive aggression, shifting the blame to another or some barely tangible external reason. There is often never a way to cheer them up or humour them out of it in such times unless it turns into a backfire, there must be a culprit to blame for their misconstrewed feelings, usually the miserable ones when they finally get stared in the face about them.

Same stuff in my marriage, everything they do wrong to hurt you is a joke. No accountability, I was making my wife dinner tonight and she was stirring up the food, I told her it needed more flavor because she had me try it. She proceeded to pour a gallon of salt on a spoon and have me try it. I almost threw up and she proceeded to state for hours it was a joke and I'm too sensitive. Stand up for yourself and eventually you'll get and we will both get out of the hell we're in. Good luck to you...

It doesn't seem rational to be logical with idiots ridicule. The joke is always on them, though their level of immaturity indicates they have no reason to not persist, they 'are' being funny. They are so irresistibly charming you'd feel you could just die in their arms. Seriousness is calm, humour can be the collaboration of fools (egging eachother on). The serious ones can turn to become quite grim, afterall narcissists do joke among themselves. It's like a place no other would then wish to be.

When my boy was young, he was really into the Captain Underpants books. One day he asked me to call him 'poop head'. I really didnt want to, told him no. He insisted, explained why. Hmm ok then. So I did. He wanted me to then be as inventive as possible .. hmm, ok, like what?". So I did what he said, but also would say hes not those things, and would keep asking him if he seriously was ok with that .. "pop head", "poopaloopa", "poo butt" .. never in a million years would I have started calling him any names, let alone those names. But I did it to placate, to humour, to buy into his 'game'. Well, now, I'm supposedly an abuser, having called him all these horrible names. If I knew it hurt him, I never would have agreed .. but his mum, my now ex, picked me up on it, highlighting how awful I was to my son, that I had upset him and made him feel unloved and that he was scared of me. And now, 25 years old, my son actually believes that too. Its heartbreaking.

Sometimes you have to make difficult choices based on how people show you that they want to treat you. I agree that those are not jokes. If he was sorry, he would just apologize instead of saying that he’s joking.

Someone in Discord just made a hurtful post about me. The poster even openly admitted to laughing over it and finding it funny. I pinged the mods about it and called the PoS out for the harassment and they too all claimed he was only joking and blamed me instead for making a big deal.
