A lot is going on during takeoff. While it only last a few seconds, if things go wrong you may have to make a split second decision that may affect the outcome. This flight is one of those flights.

Flying a B55 Baron a few years ago door popped open just before rotating aborted on the ground. He’s right better to stop if you can, solve problem get your airplane and your mind working as one. I have heard of lots of pilots have a window or door pop open. This is what we train for. Great video keep them coming.

Kim, that's a perfect example of NOT PANICKING and use what you've learned to assess the situation and conditions in a prudent manner and time to determine your'e next step. Hundreds of hours and experience helps too! Hope you Guys had a great Christmas.

A group of us were on a charter flight in a Baron returning from Norfolk Intl. to Southern Maryland and on the takeoff roll the left engine just shut down. The pilot got it refired, taxied to a turnup area and did run-ups for about 15 minutes with no problems. We took to the runway again with the pilot telling us that if he saw anything at all wrong with the engine we would have to find another way home. Everything went well and we got home with no problems. Never did find out what was up with the engine. Those guys flew us around a lot so we had good trust in their judgment.

On my 1st solo, way back in 1965, I was on my downwind leg at pattern altitude setting up my landing. I reached across the panel to pull the carb heat out on my trusty Cessna 150 (probably the 1st one built) when an explosion erupted inside the plane’s cabin. I learned a lot about flying that day including to check that little cotter pin that holds the window hinge from allowing the window to swing full open. When the pace of my heart slowed a bit and I realized I hadn’t soiled myself I was able to continue on my way to complete my 1st solo with a beautiful landing and a really good story.

Cool video , these things happen . Im not a pilot , im an Aviation Firefighter , these things happen to the Military . Whilst on Detachment to what was RAF Machrihanish , a base in Scotland . We used to have big exercises for about two weeks of all NATO submarine hunters . Well at 03:00 ( my lowest ebb !!! ) we got called out to search the Airfield to look for a sonar buoy that was dropped on take off . They thought it might be on the Airfield , so off we went searching the Runway and taxiways and every where else where we could shine our lights , no ground off the the tarmac was safe for a vehicle and some not even on foot . Well we never found it , the Aircraft carried out its mission and returned no problem . How ever some where there is a sonar buoy still to this day either on land or sea still looking for a sub , or more likely it was smashed on impact and is still laying there some where on the mull of kintyre . Thank God it wasn't some thing bigger in weapons !!!

My instructor left the seat belt outside the door of a 152 on my second supervised solo. It actually didn't start making a loud banging noise until I lifted off the runway. I looked back at the tail to make sure nothing back there was fluttering, flew the pattern and landed. At least nothing was damaged and he had to buy me lunch that day.

My dad's J35 Bonanza (N256AA, a 1958) in the 1960's; many times the co-pilot-side door would pop open on take off or slightly after, if not totally locked. We would climb, execute a full stall and slam it. This happened at least 10 times. The 1973 Baron B55 N873MD that we later owned never had any such issues. (Eagle's Nest/W'sboro, VA.)

Another entertaining and not on purpose educational video of things opening when you least expect it! That delicious porker looked good, along with that man-cave hangar. I get that hangar envy all the time and I don't even fly now... I had the door pop open in an Arrow many years ago. My wife didn't quite latch it properly from the right seat. We'd just got airborne and were turning crosswind, and "pop", and lot of air noise, so just turned downwind, landed on the runway and stopped, re-secured, and restarted off again after resetting the aircraft for T/O and checks redone! I'd flown as a right seat photographer once in a 172 with no door at all, so new what noise was like! - Yeah no issue, just noisy and annoying. Fly the plane! :)

Had a door open on takeoff in a Cessna 150. Just at liftoff. I continued the takeoff. Flew to a safe alt. Closed the door. And yeah it makes a loud sound. Got my attention real quick. Amazing how many aviation accidents result from simple things like this. Open door. Open window. Some slight anomaly during critical faze of flight resulting in pilot error.

Noise canceling headsets are great for comfort from noise fatigue and easier ATC communication but they hide the little subtle noises that can give you a heads up on what might be creeping up on you. I learned to fly in the days with only the overhead speaker providing what was needed from the radio. But even with that amount of noise all around you it was possible to filter out certain sounds that were different from what you were used to. I guess that’s why some car salesmen used to tell me they disliked demonstrating a car to a pilot because “They hear everything “.

I had exactly the same thing happen on takeoff after dropping off some passengers and as I was solo I couldn't reach the window to try and close the thing. Trouble for me it happened about 3 seconds after takeoff. My suspicion was that as one of the passengers was exiting he had placed his hand on the small tab that projects through the handle, that tab is the lock to release the handle.

I''ve got an idea, when you run the before takeoff checklist make sure the window is closed and locked. If the locking mechanism isn't dependable have it inspected and replaced.

Hi, Chris, Kim. I'm VERY glad it was only a popped window and that you're both ok after having to abort that t/o. Love watching your videos. I would just like to clear something up Chris/Kris. I thought that you were Chris. Your son Kris and of course the indubitable Kim. Can't mess that name up too easily. Some people call you Chris. Others Kris. Which one is correct? I know that this is supposed to be about flying but I couldn't help notice the song that begins and ends the video. You have one heck of a taste in music, Chris. ;) At first the song reminded me of Zayde Wolf doing "Born Ready" but of course it's Tommy Ljungberg doing the song, "Black Hole". Very appropriate song for this video. Born Ready would also work. That's how I think of you, Chris. Born ready. You've got to be one of the most calm and competent pilots out there. Just loved it when you and your friend (sorry, his name escapes me....Brian?) were talking about dual engine failure on his jet. No big deal. Both engines out. We'll just glide it in. You guys are amazing. Cool as a cucumber. Kudos to you, Chris, for choosing this particular song. From my point of view you have a very excellent taste in music unless it was Kim that picked out that song and then she has a super taste in music. Whenever you have great music on your vids that isn't all that well known, Chris, you could do me a real solid and put the names of the tunes in your comments at the beginning of the video. Would really appreciate that. Wish you and your family all the very best. Have a wonderful New Year. Stay safe and watch out for people trying to cough on you. ;) This darn virus ain't over by a long shot. Hunker down for the long term. Take care.
