It's the 21st century and we are living in some of the best times to be musicians! Gear is plentiful and you can get your hands on just about anything you want with the click of a mouse. But, when should you buy new gear? In this video, I go over the 4 questions I ask myself before bringing in a new piece of gear.

Completely resonate with needing guitars to hand otherwise they didn't get used. When I had 16 electric guitars I played 3 or 4 of them. Now I have 7, I still play the same 3 or 4! I have more gear than I will ever need, so with the exception of one specific purchase (electronic drums, because I cannot use my acoustic kit in my current living situation), I won't be buying anything new other than to replace breakages if needed. I've cleared out maybe 30% of my kit in the last year (all surplus stuff) and I can see myself continuing as I strive to make myself more efficient. BTW, would love to discuss maybe doing a collab video with you at some point, if that's something you'd be up for.

Our ability to make music isn't limited by gear any more. The longer I play music, the more I want to do with less, and we have the gear to do it now. It's possible to record a whole album with a few instruments, a microphone, and a laptop or groovebox.

Exactly. I love it so much. I find I'm the same as you and often just want my acoustic these days.

I keep going back and forth between forcing myself to sound good (vocals) on a $15 mic and contemplating an SM58 purchase.

Not to be the guy that says buy more gear but a 58 is something you could have forever and at a pretty reasonable price. I bought mine in 2005 and it's still going strong.

Love your channel! I gotta say, I failed at your 2022 no-new-gear challenge. I bought an inexpensive Jazzmaster for a surf-music project I have been working on. I just don't have "that sound" and wasn't able to emulate it from my current lineup of gear. As you said, I needed the "right tool for the job" so I guess it's justified. Lots of things to consider when buying gear. Thanks for continuing to inspire and for posting such great content! Maybe we will cross paths in North Bay someday..

Thanks for watching. Certainly not here to tell anybody what to buy or not buy. Just to start some conversations is all. Glad that Jazzmaster is working out for you. It's pretty crazy how much a guitar can change the way you play sometimes.

My problem is I go onto reverb and find things I must have and I have zero self control so it’s a buy a thon….still no shame I play them all and love the shit out of em
