Generator oil is pure bullshiit. Generators especially petrol generators don't have any stringent requirements like cars and trucks and uses splash lubrication system, which means every engine oils from motorcycle to construction equipment can be used. Some generator brand like ingco requires only the API rating regardless of the viscosity

I have a Champion 2500 Dual Fuel Inverter. I used a magnetic dipstick, I used their break in oil for 5 hrs, got a fair amount of metal shavings, ran it for another hr, changed it.....very little metal showing. Took it to ten hrs and changed again.....no metal showing.......I'm good for 50 hrs at least. I'm using AMSOIL Small Engine 5/30.......love it!

If we do a little math and compare to your daily driver. Also take into consideration that oil not only loses viscosity but it also gets dirty from combustion blow by. Same way your car gets black oil from combustion soot. Most generators are carburetor so not as clean a burn as a car that is fuel injected. carb engines makes for dirty oil and generators are running at a high RPM with most units being single cylinders air cooled and with no air flowing over engine like a air cooled motorcycle, They run pretty hot and they are working hard 24/7 with very little cool down periods especially during a power failure in the south. If you start a road trip in a car with fresh oil and run it at a high RPM , Say 3000 RPM Lets just say 80MPH non stop for 24 hours straight. You will cover 1920 miles. Now double that = 3840 Miles. In two days its time for a oil change. Remember , Your car is liquid cooled and multi cylinders and fuel injected so cleaner burn means less blow by soot = cleaner oil. Most generators only use 1 qt or 1 1/2 qts per fill. So running 12 days straight changing every 24 hrs is not a bad price to pay. We are just talking about your basic stand by people have in there garage. These little engines are being punished. Now if you have a larger generator that runs at a lower RPM, You can go longer between changes. If you have a nice little three cylinder diesel , Liquid cooled like I do , It can sit there and purr for a week before a drain and fill.

nice and simple information. some manuals say hours of run time OR each year, i think each year is pointless if you only do a 30 minute run-test every other month.

20 hour oil change service intervals after break in of 40 hours? Something seems wrong here. Those engines must be using tin foil for steel or have an oil reservoir grossly undersized. I've owned two B&S powered 5550w generators for nearly 40 years first one lasted over 20 years. I power my whole house when the power routinely goes out, running up to 48 hours at a time. I change the oil once a year or the 100-200 hour range. From my experience, the generator portion will fail before the engine does.

Theory is that the duromax line is a oil splash system, and after 20 hrs any oil other than synthetic loses its viscosity. The duromax customer support will tell you on the phone after break in switch to a full synthetic 5w-40 or 10w-30 and go 50 hrs max

@@NonhmficI prefer changing oil every 20 hrs with conventional rather than to rely on synthetic oils for "long drain" . I'm sure my generator will last longer, even outlasting me

I let mine go 55 hours on Castrol Synthetic oil 5w-50 in warm weather. It came out a silver soup. 10w30 in cold weather is fine. In hot weather? That dog won't hunt. I use 40w and in 100+ degrees 50w VR1.

Every 20 hours for an oil generator change seems wrong. 1 tank of gas for break in oil. Every 50-100 hours oil change time. Heavy load 50 hours, 50% load 100 hours.

Damn that's crazy you would go broke changing all the Dango oil all the time I'd be a lot of money change the oil almost every other day if you live camping

Changing oil every 20 hours??? Here in florida we lose power for 7 to 14 days during hurricane season so each day running 20 hours I need to change oil makes no sense!!

my champion 2k did 9 days straight after Ian Manual, stickers, tag on the handle says 100 hours. i use 10w30 Pennzoil Ultra Platnium.

You are correct. Every 20 hours seems excessive. I think it's every 100 to 200 hours after you change it the first time.

I think my parents lawnmower runs with 25yo oil - just some level checking and little oil fill ups in between^^

The manual for this duromax states after 20 hrs, THEN next change at 50 hrs, then 100 hrs, so something messed up doing 50 then 20hrs. Debris from new engine dictates more frequent initial change on any motor!!

I change it with 10/30 every 50 hours of operation and it looks pretty black. Wouldn’t advise going past that.

Of course. It's only in the u.s that 10w30 is recommended, in Africa and Asia, 10w40 and 15w40 mineral will work fine

That is a completely ridiculous recommendation for most generators. Folks please do more information searches before following this recommendation.
