These videos are excellent. I passed Yesterday with 0 minors - partly thanks to these videos! They are like having a 2nd instructor, who can sit down and talk you through everything when you aren't under the pressure of driving.
@@rahuldev650 driving is partially about understanding how to drive but it's mostly just practice and training, you will get there but it takes time and effort. You'll get it wrong many many times and then start getting it more and more right naturally:)
I passed my test today with two minor faults. Due to the covid backlog and my rural location and lack of instructors there, I wasn’t able to get any lessons with an instructor at all. I practiced with friends and family in my own car for the last 4 months since getting my provisional, and I binge watched your videos, as well as reading the Highway Code as my bedtime story. I was amazed and shocked after the test. Your videos helped so much, and I even had a few occasions where my dad was complaining at me for not indicating and I corrected him with information from your videos. Thank you so much!!
0:08 _In this video, whenever I talk about signalling I'm referring to your indicators: your orange flashing lights on either side of the car_ Nice of you to give an explanation for any BMW or Audi drivers who may be watching!
It’s really interesting to see differences in different countries. In the UK, you only need to use the signalling in a sensible, for me, quite understandable manner. The very same goes for side looks. In Germany you are taught to even do a side look when there’s no lane, not even pedestrians next to you … well and signal for every obstacle in the road… daunting.
I passed my driving test 21 years ago in another country and have been driving since then. Now, I am watching your videos to revise before my UK driving test. These are invaluable sources of information, thank you.
I have some problems when driving. I accelerate to slow. And when Turing I turn to late and then I need to steer a lot. Is there any videos on this? I think it would be nice with a video where you drive in traffic and juts explain where you start like brake or chabge gear and mirror signals. I seen some videos about this city and other places traffic in Sweden. Maybe can be useful at this chanel also. Thanks for all videos they really help to learn driving. I drive with family so super helpful with all videos. 😊
To accelerate faster you want to add a little more revs (gas) which enables you to lift the clutch a bit higher which in turn will accelerate you faster. Don’t lift the clutch before adding more gas as you will most likely stall.
And when turning into a side road from a main road try not get any part of the car past the start of the junction on your right before you start steering
Try to follow the shape of the curb when making a short turn (right turn driving on the right, left turn in UK), so start steering when the front wheel is at the point where the curb bends off. For acceleration, move away with a little more gas and clutch a little higher up and gear up at higher revs.
Passed my test today for the first time! Thank you so much for your videos!! Whoever is still waiting to pass their test, don't give up! You can do it!!!
@@mylittleworld2552 Thank you! Honestly, I probably did at least 100 hours. I didn't have any opportunity to practice other than my lessons so I did a lot lol
I am just about to have my first driving lessons with a real car in a week. I have to say your videos have been a lot of help. Thank you very much sir!
Im flabbergasted that the examiner passed the pupil who pulled out in front of the car who was not signalling when turning right at mini r/b! It is surely a serious or potential dangerous fault! I would not go at a mini roundabout until i am sure where the car with no signal is going! (read their position/speed) i also would not advise a learner to assume a car with no signal is going straight ahead at a mini roundabout. If instructors are advising that learners pull out when a car isn't signalling before seeing where car is going, i feel that is poor instruction. Highway code states no signal for intermediate exit but no signal cannot be trusted as much as a signal cannot be trusted. Signals are only useful to increase anticipation of where a car should be going, which in turn increases reaction speed. Great videos overall.
Hey Richard , got a quick question to ask you in terms of driving test. Would the examiner mark me down if I don’t take opportunities AFTER knowing I could have taken them. Eg this particularly happens at busy roundabouts where I’m not sure where the cars are turning but they end up going left, so then I realise I could’ve pulled out and gone but I didn’t want to take the risk. Same goes for mini roundabouts where I be extra careful because some drivers actually take U-turns , though uncommon it’s happened a lot in my experience and so I always wait for the roundabout to clear before going. Would that be marked down for hesitation even though I’m just being careful?
You would fail if you always waited for the roundabout to be clear before you went. People do U turns sometimes but it's normally obvious as they are slow and wide. You should not do U turns on mini roundabouts especially when other vehicles are around. You be marked for hesitancy if the examiner feels you are missing easy opportunities. They don't expect you to take the opportunities that require you to accelerate harshly. You will fail if you miss multiple easy opportunities. You are expected to take an easy shield, watch my video on mini roundabouts for more information.
@@ConquerDriving I watched your other video and it certainly helped, but I still feel uncomfortable relying solely on someone’s indicator at a big roundabout and at junctions , I always pull out to a roundabout at a steady speed so I try being very careful . Mini roundabouts are slightly easier though but here in Birmingham it’s shocking how many drivers have the nerve to U turn at them.
I am also learning in Birmingham the Traffic is quite heavy here and people signal wrong on roundabout. I had a narrow escape today when the driver gave left signal I prepared to go but instead he came in front on my car and crossed me. Really scared me.
The rules are much different here in Latvia. The only time we aren't supposed to signal is when it could be misleading to others. In any other case we need to signal regardless of whether anyone is behind us or not. We even have to signal when turning in car parks! Like, I failed my first driving test mainly because I didn't use signals when turning in two supermarket car parks. If I would drive like you did in this video, I would fail the test in 5 minutes. The main reason why we have such strict requirements is that this helps drivers develop a habit of using signals, eventually improving traffic safety and reducing accidents. Some people refuse to obey (*khm khm BMW drivers*), but they're the minority and they actually tend to cause dangerous situations because of this. Thank you for the video! Here are some suggestions that I would like to see you talk about: * Overtaking other cars. Seriously, this is the single most dangerous maneuver, and yet I don't think that I have seen a video about it on this channel. * The accidents and what to do when it happens. In Latvia, if only two cars are involved and the damage isn't serious enough to keep them from driving, then we can fill a form describing the circumstances of the accident that both parties sign and that would allow them to get the insurance payout to cover repair expenses. If the accident is more serious and/or if someone has been injured, we need to call the police. * What to do when one or more of car lights don't work. Which light faults still allow driving and which ones prohibit driving entirely? Thank you for your videos and your hard work! They have helped me and many others when our instructors get lazy and don't explain things in detail!
@@ConquerDriving Yes, please do a video on how to pass a slower vehicle! Especially on the highway, when you're going 70 mph, and you want to pass a truck that's going 5 mph below the speed limit. Sixth gear doesn't have much power. I know you're supposed to downshift into a lower gear to get more power. But I don't know the exact moment to downshift, and which gear to select.
@@hamsterama In my opinion downshifting is normally not necessary on the highway unless maybe you have a 1.0L engine and if you're already going the speed limit then it's not really a problem if the difference in speed is small and it takes some time to pass. Go when there is no car catching you on the overtaking lane and move back over when you can see the car you overtook in the centre mirror. Maybe on a two way road you would need to downshift so you can overtake quickly if the gap is small or you can't see very far, but I would try to avoid overtaking in this situation and wait for a safer gap anyway until you're very experienced with the car and can downshift quickly (see the rev matching video on this channel) so you can floor it
@@RusNad Yes, that's what I'd like to know....How to downshift quickly in order to gain power when there's not much of a gap in the passing lane. This is more of a problem during rush hour traffic, not so much on the weekend. On the weekend, no need to downshift, since the are a lot fewer cars. If I drive during rush hour on weekdays, though, passing in my manual car can be scary, and I avoid doing it. When I give a lot of gas in 6th gear, it takes a while to gain speed. I'm afraid of getting rear ended. None of this is an issue when I drive my automatic transmission car, because the car (I think) automatically drops a gear during hard acceleration (at least it sure feels that way). By the way, my manual car is a 2020 Corolla hatchback. It has a 2.0 liter, 169 hp engine, and it can automatically rev match on downshifts. I don't know if the Corollas sold in the UK have the auto rev match feature, but all manual 12th generation Corollas here in the US do.
Hello Richard. I would like to ask u if there is no one around and i signal to move off from left or pull up in left will it b a minor fault? Im confused bcoz my instructor says it is a minor but my daughters instructor says its not. Plz reply
I'll be moving to the UK soon and the signalling rules are going to be hard to get used to as they seem very different than here in the U.S. Here, you must always signal when you'll be changing the position of the car regardless of if you see another driver. The idea being there could always be a car you couldn't see. It's also expected you develop the habit of signaling so you do it every time. If you are making it a conscious choice you are taking more time to do it and increasing your chance of not doing it when you should. Another difference here is signaling isn't viewed as a request to let you in, it's a message to other drivers that you WILL be moving position. It's up to you to find an opportunity to do so. Sometimes people will make space and sometimes they won't but you signal at the point your intent becomes to move position. There are rules around the distance you should be signaling, you can't signal too early or too late when turning for example.
Just a suggestion could you please borrow a pickup truck just to show us how to park in a forward bay. It is one of the most challenging parkings. It is more difficult to do in a pickup truck maybe a demonstration from you could make things easier
Hey buddy, I hope you're well. I was wondering if you had a video on "speed limits" (i.e, roads, speeds for what area etc etc?). I hope you don't mind me reaching out to you like this but I didn't know how else to ask. Another great and helpful video... My test is coming up and I'm still learning from you... Gulp! 😅😵💫 Thanks again!
Thank you for the suggestion, I may do later. But street lamps means it is 30mph, not street lamps is national and if it's different there should be signs.
I wish there was a yt channel like you for left hand drive countries because youe explain stuff very accurately i took the general stuff but the side difference still is an obstacle for me i couldn't learn everything from u Keep it up brother you're the best
When you are entering in to a motorway u need to indicate and to slowdown and to wait for someone to let you in as I have seen a lot of. People that they assuming that they we let them now! And something important in Greece if you "use your headlights" it does not always mean that u will be able to. Pass we using it also as a signal! "see me do Not cross" it is controversial but this is the truth,
Hi clearview have being watching your videos from the day I started my driving it so much stressful and am about to give up since I failed my second test due to,Response to signs / signals - Traffic lights I need better explanation I do have short memory even when the examiner explained to my instructor am not sure she can really understand the situation since she was not in the car with us.. I came across temporary traffic after that their was a giveaway which I did slow down maybe stopped at the giveaway to look but I was told I shouldnt have stopped because the temporary light override the giveaway. I'm hoping I could go back to the same spot to look at it maybe take a video of it so I can show my instructor
Hi, I struggled with right turns. When I turn right. I often turn too wide. Or when I pull into a parking space on my right ( Perpendicular Park) I struggle with getting car straight. But when I pull into park on my left I do it perfectly. What video of yours do you suggest I watch regarding this?
I have some forward bay parking videos and a right turn video that may help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BdLaCAyv8Eg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XX-Pa_f2g7M.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nJq7ZYxnv5Y.html
Don't you signal after you've taken a turn, to let other road users know that you just turned? That's what everyone else does. And you use the hazard lights to let people know that you're drunk so you might be a bit more hazardous than they expect.
I have had an issue with my signal timing recently. Signalling before i look (split second but still irritating) hoping i can grow out of this habit before my test in November 😕
13:10 don’t feel this is fair at all, what if people are signalling by mistake at a mini roundabout? Have seen plenty of people either leave their signal on by accident or signal the wrong way. Is it really a “serious” fault if you wait that extra 2 seconds to make sure they’re not coming your way?
You probably get this a lot, but THANK YOU 🙏 I conquered driving and got my license. I had a very hard time, but your videos made me go to the end and to see things and mistakes on myself I didn’t look or tough I’m doing them. Cheers from Serbia 🙌🏻
Really thankful I found your channel! I have not driven in 18 years since I passed & your videos are the best refresher course I could've asked for. I've actually tried taking refrseher courses with an instructor but few lessons later, I quickly learnt that I've basically learned nothing at all.Your channel made a HUGE difference & I'm now more confident driving solo on the road then before! Thank you so much!
I have improved a lot learning to drive a manual car by watching your videos. They've built my confidence even before going for my practical test. Thank you Richard.
"If you look around and there's no one around at all, there's no need to signal" [before you move away]. I don't understand this advice. Surely, based on the small chance that there's e.g. a pedestrian ahead of you, or a cyclist behind you, that you've not observed, it's ALWAYS better to signal before you move away (or indeed make any unexpected manoeuvre). I assume you are basing this advice on the test criteria, which will not penalise you for moving away without signalling if there is no-one around. Even then, surely they are equally not going to penalise you for indicating when no-one is around. In which case, isn't it safest and simplest to teach to just always indicate?
I can't disagree with you but it's bad to signal regardless without thinking, especially if cars are coming from behind, the signal could make the driver think you will pull out. The reason I teach this is to try and encourage my pupils to think about their surroundings.
I have a driving test coming up, I’m super anxious and tbh not feeling ready atal. My instructor says I am but I’m not so confident. I’ve watched so many videos of other instructors doing these types of videos and none of them stick in my mind like yours do. The way you explain things is amazing! You really break every thing down, almost remind me of a children’s tv presenter 😅 but think the way you teach and what you do is really positive, and very helpful. Fingers crossed for test day 🤞🏽and thank you for these videos! 🙏
Do I have to signal when turning onto a one-way road (T junction - no going ahead) or turning left onto a dual-carriage way that only permits left turn (with a physical central reservation - so right turn not possible anyway).
Regarding "missed opportunities" at roundabouts, this can also apply to turning from major to minor roads and vice-versa. I guess the same approach applies - take note of their signal but also take into account their speed and position. If for example I am waiting to turn left onto a major road from a minor one, and someone is approaching from my right and indicating to turn into the road I'm leaving, I like to wait until they have slowed down a fair bit before I move, in case they've just left their indicator on by accident or are planning to pull in or turn beyond the road I'm on.
I was going down a country road (van behind me) i knew that the entrance was on the right few yards away so signal rt well in time so van would not overtake thought I was doing well but the when I drove into entrance the guy started to pap at me . People are so inpatient it knocked my confidence
i was driving with my instructor and the car ahead put on the left signal and slowed down so I assumed he is going to park , but he turned right into the lane with the left signal on -_- , luckily i was a good distance form him so nothing bad happened
Usually yes, but if it's so open you know no one would get to the roundabouts before you have finished then there isn't a need. That's rarely the case though as you can't often see that far at junctions.
Sir I was on a straight road and was overtaking a bus on bus stop right opposite of bus stop there was also junction I doesn’t signal as it would let me thinking I was turning was that ok?
would you signal left if going ahead at roundabout where there is no exit to the left just ahead and to the right ? ( something like turned T junction if you know what i mean )
I don't live in the UK, nor do i have any plans of moving to it, yet i still find myself watching videos instructing on how to pass the driving test in the UK.
Sir I failed my Test and Because of Signal Corrects i don’t know what should i do when i am driving on dual carriageway and I need to turn right from middle lane and I’m in busy road at 40 speed
I'm sorry to hear that. If you're in the UK you need to signal, slow down gently and wait for oncoming cars in the appropriate place. Also, make sure the road you're entering isn't blocked before crossing the path of oncoming cars.
Hi Richard these videos certainly help but I’m going to let my dad train me when I’m in the car with him it’s better to have an instructor in the car with you telling you and doing what he says while behind the wheel but these videos are definitely help so thank you for that Richard
I am struggling to get out onto roundabout confidently when they're busy.. .. judging if I've got time to go/how fast they're going is what gets me stuck
@@ConquerDriving many thanks 😊 I will be swotting up with all your videos. Thank you for helping us all. I never expected learning to drive would be easy, but I also never thought it would be this hard. Throw in all the pandemic stuff, lock downs, long gaps, a diagnosis of dyslexia, then asd during. It's been an eventful couple of years x
If the first exit is to the right then I probably wouldn't bother signalling right and just signal left to leave the roundabout when it's appropriate. Always be flexible with your signals, no signal is better than a misleading signal.
@@ConquerDriving thank you, would you signal left before yoy enter as the Highway Code does say signal left for first exit. Or would you not signal and signal just before your exit
If a lane splits into two lanes (at a junction for example, left lane is turning left, right lane is going straight on), would I have to indicate to do choose my lane. I had one instructor say no as I'm not changing lanes but choosing lanes, and I had one that said it would be an instant fail. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated
It all depends on the individual situation, if you think the signal is helpful, use it, if you think it's misleading, don't use it. Generally I don't signal when choosing lanes but will if I think it will help.
If I was to stop at a zebra crossing as it looked like someone may cross but they ended up walking past would I get penalised on my driving test? Thanks.
If it is genuinely possible they could cross as you got there then slowing down and being ready to stop is what I teach people to do. It's good planning.
Hi Love the help. Question. When moving from 2nd lane of a dual carriageway back to lane 1, your commentary said signal left. I’m a little confused as I believe it’s ok not to signal left to return to lane 1, as it’s your normal driving lane. Also, the signal can sometimes mislead if used near the exit of a slip road as it could be interpreted as leaving. Would you mind clarifying this for me? Thank you.
You don't have to signal, but if there are others around you should. It can also be a good idea in case you missed someone approaching dangerously from behind.
*Imagine driving in a three lane where the middle one has straight arrow, left lane with left arrow and right with right one only. Do I need signalling left or right before turning from such road? I am not talking about lane that has dual marking i.e. left&straight or right&straight arrow, I signal accordingly there.*
When it comes to deciding whether or not you should signal. Think, is it helpful? In which case signal. Is it misleading? In which case don't signal even if it maybe helpful to someone else.
You teach me more then my driving instructor tbh lol, Question: will I get a minor if I signal when moving out if there no cars around? It’s a habit of mine if I get asked to pull up on the left side of the road, I always go my 6 point checks then signal right to move off. Will I get a minor signalling with no cars around? I have my test next Tuesday 16th ah
Thank you, you don't need to signal if no one is around and you only need a six point check. You need to make sure no one is coming and check your road side blind spot.
Thanks so much Richard, your videos have been so helpful! Just passed today after a year of driving without an instructor then having to do my test 300 miles from where I live because the backlog in all test centres! Without you, I would not have passed!
With Roundabouts I get so confused with lane markings, some of them are fading, but I know that's not the main problem cos others manage it fine, and I end up drifting to the lanes I'm not supposed to be in and then coming back. I just get so confused with them. Do you have any tips to stay in your lane, especially when you can't see the road markings as well?
When there are no road markings you can try to divide the road up in two lanes based on the width of a typical lane but the main thing you want to do is make sure you don't hit anyone as cars won't be taking such a predicable and marked out path.
Hi can anyone answer here if I am going 4th exit on roundabout I am supposed to give left indicator after 3rd exit so when should I move to the exit Should I do 90 degree or should I drift to 3rd exit slowly then move out at 4th ? I am confused.
