When Were Cornelius and His Household Saved? (Acts 10-11) 

Don't forget this is the same Peter that is being sent to the gentiles in the house of Cornelious and Peter says plainly to the Jews, v17 If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” 18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life. ”So that they would obey the scripture that tells us to be baptized, it does picture our death to self and to be risen to walk in newness of life. Peter plainly tell us why they were to be baptized v17, read it again. Also remember when John baptized Jesus in Matthrew what did Jesus tell him when John said this to him: Matt 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Notice in v14 John told Jesus he needed to be baptized by him and v15 Jesus tells John why all new believer should be baptized, V15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And then the last 2 verses God remarks of his beloved Son. Will you now believe what the bible plainly states without having to explain away this passage, because it is also taught in the whole new testament.

No, you are wrong about that, just read it from 1 Cor 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, "even as unto babes in Christ". 2"I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto "ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able". 3 "For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men"? These are clearly saved people in this text Paul is simply telling them they are babes in Christ and are acting as carnal people. Just read the words, they are self-explanatory. Remember they are babes in Christ, everyone is when first saved, we are commanded to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God. It is a lifetime of learning and growing. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing, the words I speak to you they are spirit, and they are life. Isaiah 55:11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish that for which I purpose, and shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. @@amos3three941 Thank you for your reply. However, the church in Corinth was founded in Acts 18. They were not babes in the woods. Paul was with them for 18 months at the foundation. They were following the gospel when they had 4 divisions (1 Cor 1) AND they had moral issues within the church (1 Cor 5). Incest, church discipline, secular lawsuits, problems with marital obligation, questions about idols and the like (1 Cor 5-8). THEN in 1 Cor 12-13, Paul is discussing how to MANNAGE THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. They had the Holy Spirit. However, they still were acting carinal. This was after 2 years of foundation WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT THE WHOLE TIME, with moral problems and secular issues. The whole point of 1 Corinthians was to remove and correct serious issues within the church that the people had seen as light issues, but Paul viewed as serious sin. Those issues being doctrinal, personal, and corporate conflict as well as purity. So yes, that is the Christians acting carnal while having the Holy Spirit.

The speaker says that the giving of the Holy Spirit to the believer has never been in order to save him. The Word, however, says that " He that hath not the Spirit of Christ is none of his"( Rom.8:9). In this verse, the Holy Spirit is also identified as the " Spirit of God". So, until a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit, they are not saved/ born again yet.

As it is in many scriptures, according to the original Greek, to believe " in" or " on" Jesus Christ translates as believing " into"( eis) Jesus Christ in order to be saved. This speaks of be saved, or being born again" as the result of a process. Acts 2:38 is that process. The only sign given in scripture that this process has been completed the moment it occurs is the speaking in tongues( Acts ch.2,10,and ch.19).

@@ironside388 The entire video was about how Cornelius was not "saved" when he received the Holy Spirit under the preaching of Peter in Acts 10. The presenter gave several reasons for why he believes that Cornelius was not "saved" when the Holy Spirit came upon "all who heard the message". One of his reasons was that "The purpose of the Holy Spirit was never to be an indicator of whether someone is saved or not". I simply posted scripture which indicates that is not true. The Holy Spirit being poured out on someone does give indication that someone has been saved. The main purpose of the Holy Spirit coming on the household of Cornelius was to show Peter that Gentiles can also receive salvation. Peter was preaching and when Cornelius and those with him came to faith, what is described in Eph 1:13. They heard the Gospel, believed, and were sealed by the Holy Spirit. In the first century a "seal" was both a mark and a enclosure. The most common usage was to put wax on a letter to enclose the letter and mark that the sender of the letter was authentic. The was would be imprinted with the senders "Seal" so that the recipient would know who sent the letter and that the letter had not be tampered with. In this case, the Holy Spirit came upon Cornelius and all those that believed indicating that they were saved. You can take it as a rebuke or correction or however you want. But he puts forth a poor argument that is contradicted by scripture.

@@ironside388 Matthew 24:24 says "For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect." I believe those Christ was talking about in Matthew 7:22-23 to either be those false Christ and Prophets or their followers. They aren't filled with the Spirit. They are given power by Satan to do signs and wonders in order to lead people astray. They may even be shocked to find out they have been deceived and aren't serving the real Christ and are instead following a false Christ. At any rate, it is clear that at some point, there will be people able to do "signs and wonders" without knowing Jesus and without having the Holy Spirit. If they had the Holy Spirit then they would "know Jesus". 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 1 John 4:13. If those people who did miracles had the Spirit then Christ would abide in them and therefore would "know them".

Both Matthew 7:22-23 and Matthew 24:24 are talking about "End Times" Matthew 24 is about signs for the end of the age and Matthew 7:22-23 is about the day of Judgement by Christ. Any answer to "are we in the end times" would be pure speculation on my part. How do we know that someone has the Spirit of God?(Holy Spirit)? We don't, at least not in an infallible way. All true believers have the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 says 'You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him." and I've already quoted John 7:39. However, not everyone who claims to be a follower of Christ is truly a follower of Christ. Some people are hypocrites and say they are Christian for any number of reasons, when they have never actually been convicted of sin and repented. So while we can never no for 100% certainty because some people are just good actors and can learn how Christians are supposed to act and act like a Christian . However, we can look at what people say and what people do as indicators of a Spirit lead Christian life. 1. They have been Baptized. Depending on your theology baptism either imparts the Holy Spirit or is a confirmation that someone is being lead by the Spirit. Either way. True Believers will have been or seek to be Baptized. 2. They seek to be filled with and walk in the Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit is not the same as receiving the Spirit. The Greek word for "filled" in Eph 5:18 means be "complete or perfect". You could literally translate it "Be complete with the Spirit". Every true believer receives the Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit is an ongoing daily process of submitting to the Spirits control and power. It is to be completely controlled by the Spirit. It is to rely completely on the Spirit to guide us and empower us. The Holy Spirit uses the Word (the sword of the Spirit) to show us how to live and then the Holy Spirit empowers us to live out the teachings of the Word. The Word tells us to believe and repent. The Holy Spirit gives us the desire and ability to believe and repent. The Word tells us to share the Gospel, the Holy Spirit gives us the desire and ability to share the Gospel. And so on... You can look the first part of Romans 8, Ephesians 5, and pretty much the entire book of 1 John to what it looks like to "Walk in and be filled by the Spirit" 3. The have good fruit. In the Bible fruit is used as a word to describe someones attitude, conduct and works. Jesus tells us you can tell a false prophet by "their fruit" in Matthew 7:20 Galatians 5:22-23 gives us a list of the "Fruits of the Spirit". I could go on and on about how to tell if someone is a true believer (Love, Worship, give...) But I also acknowledge that people can fake the external evidence of being a true Christian and having the Spirit. However, If someone is faking being a Christian then odds are they will eventually mess us and the truth will be known. So while I can't infallibly say if someone else "has the Spirit" I can infallibly say that I have the Spirit. While I can only see other peoples words and actions I can know the status of my heart and soul. The Bible is very clear that we can know we "have eternal life" 1 John 5:13 says "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." 1 John gives many evidences that we have eternal life, including having the Spirit. If you know in your heart and soul that you truly trust in Christ, if you have been convicted of sin, have repented of past sins, and seek to live a holy life then you have the Holy Spirit. Otherwise you would have never done any of those things. Now, you can say you trust in Jesus but if your sin doesn't bother you then you are deceived. 1 John 1:6 says "If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth" It is also possible to live a moral life and not have the Spirit. There are plenty of "good people" who understand the difference between right and wrong. Being moral and walking in the Spirit is not the same thing. For a Christian, morality is made known by the Word and is put into action by the Spirit. For the non-Christian, morality comes from culture and societal norms. And as we are currently seeing, those norms change over time. I'm sorry this is so long but you asked question that can't be answered in a few words.

@@ironside388 No, I've equated that at doing signs and wonders does not always equate to having the Holy Spirit. Being able to do signs and wonders does not necessarily mean someone is a Christian and is indwelled with the Holy Spirit. However, all believers have the Holy Spirit. Not doing "signs and wonders" doesn't mean you don't have the Spirit. I've heard some say that if you don't speak in tongues or heal the sick then you don't have the Holy Spirit. That is just false teaching. 1 Cor 12:4-6 says "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone." All Christians are indwelled and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Whatever Spiritual gifts they have is up to God and is used for God's purposes. The "everyone" is this verse is talking about the audience of the letter, which is both the people in the church at Corinth and all Christians everywhere until the end of the age. The same Spirit empowers us all.

Exactly, just as Peter told the Jews the same thing that happened to those at Pentecost(Acts 2 , they heard the word and were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues(languages of those who said that they heard them speaking in their own tongues, understanding and then believing the gospel. I am not going to post all of Acts chapter 2 if you are interested enough about this and you will see the example that Peter is talking about in Chapter 10:11 at the house of Cornelius.

Would you please show your proof texts where you got your information, it sure would help to be able to read exactly how that is stated, if you can show it, because that is not stated in Acts 10-11 and they were clearly saved after hearing Peter and by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and then are baptized is clearly in the text. Read chaper 11 slowly.

@amos3three941 Thanks for your reply. The proof texts that you requested are in Acts ch.10. The scriptures therein themselves prove what I spoke about in my last comment. The Holy Spirit cannot be recieved by a believer until after belief,repentance, and water baptism. The reason for this is that being saved is being born again and just as natural birth is the end result of a process, so is spiritual rebirth. Just as under the old covenant the temples High priest had to apply water and blood before the Spirit of God would occupy the Holy Of Holies, so is water and blood and important source of the temple of our bodies spiritually being cleansed so that the Holy Spirit will occupy it or be recieved. Water baptism is the mode by which the blood of Christ cleanses our bodies spiritually. In the case of the gentiles in Acts ch.10, the temple of their bodies had to have been spiritually cleansed in order for them to have recieved the Holy Spirit. Peter commanded them to be rebaptized afterwards in the name of Jesus Christ because by calling the name of Jesus Christ they take on His name just as a natural bride takes on the bridegrooms name as the minister calls it over her. The name of Jesus Christ, according to scripture is the name of all His family in heaven and earth.( Eph.3:15).

If one reads where you start "I believe according to scripture that Cornelius and the other gentiles present in Acts ch 10 were baptized before Peters' arrival by John the baptist the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins and as a result were spiritual cleansed sufficiently enough to receive the Holy Spirit". Only problem with this is you don't actually have any scripture to prove your statement, therefore why would anyone place more value on what you believe than what it actually says in the text? Because the other Jews statement also doesn't agree with you either. Just, if I could say it nicely, read what it actually says should be sufficient to see the truth.

@amos3three941 Understanding the scriptures, as I'm sure that you already know, is being able to properly interpret what is written in scripture comparing scripture to scripture. In Acts ch.10 with Peters roof top vision with Cornelius' messengers approaching Peters' house, the Lords message to Peter wasn't about eating unclean animals but what he ,and all jews, considered unclean, the gentiles God said,"Call not though unclean what I hath cleansed" is refering to the gentiles Peter would soon meet. According to the original Greek, " hath" is something that's already been done. The only way that would have been possible in the case of the gentiles is if they had been baptized by John, the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And that when Jesus shed His blood at Calvary it became effective for those previously baptized by John. Lastly, the Holy Spirit will not occupy an unclean temple and in the case of believers it can only occur through water baptism.

So, we should think because you give your translation, we should throw away all our bibles that say what they said? Not wanting to sound cruel, but you are expecting too much, but this is just my opinion, I will stick with what our bibles actually say, they have good for several hundred years already and have not been revised either!

Since the bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and he cannot word it incorrectly, it means exactly what it says.

@Ironside 3:36-6:22 Don says that the terms used to describe Cornelius are never used to describe a lost person. Then he goes on to say that Peter was to speak words to him of salvation. Then he says that Cornelius was living as a saved man under the law of the gentiles until he heard the words of Peter and had to make a decision to accept or reject Christ. Here's my issue: If what Don is saying is true, then anyone who has never heard of Christ, EVEN TODAY, is saved under whatever law applies to them, not the covenant that started when Christ died. That is a huge contradiction in scripture, since Jesus is now the only way to the father, following his death and the new covenant beginning. Hopefully that makes sense.

I, too, am not necessarily convinced of this particular argument. From reading the relevant passages in Scripture, I don't think there's enough to clearly assert that Cornelius was definitely and unquestionably not saved before being baptized, but neither is there enough to assert that he in fact was. However, when in doubt, always go back to the words of Jesus Christ: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." -Mark 16:16 Rather than trying to find perhaps one special instance of someone being saved without being baptized (Cornelius was the first Gentile convert), and this being literally the only case in which that could even be asserted, for those of us living today without the holy and chosen apostles on this earth to speak the word to us, we should just follow the instructions and command clearly given by Jesus Christ in the Great Commission; that is belief + baptism = salvation.

You cannot be saved like the thief on the cross, however you can be saved like the Ethiopian eunuch. Acts 8:26-39.

Saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ*alone* for salvation. Why would someone wait until they are in a situation when they are about to die to want to be saved? That implies they have willfully disobeyed God all their life. I doubt anyone is willing to give all their life to God if they intentionally disobeyed God up until they knew they were going to die. That sounds like a person who is only trying to find a loop hole to get out of hell. People have a false belief that as long as you have not died physically you still have opportunity to be saved. The Bible teaches you can be lost with no hope before you die physically.

What was cornelius told that would save him. WORDS, not HS baptism. HS baptism occured only 2 times in scripture. Read the Book

@@wesleycrisp6523 in the Biblical Greek there are persons and numbers, and they have to agree in order to build a doctrine, so Acts 2: 38. Repent and remission of sins are both the 2nd person and Plural in number, so remission of sins agrees with Repent but baptised is the 3rd person and singular in number, So it doesn't agree with remission of sins, so you can't build a doctrine on water baptism for the remission of sins, But you can build a doctrine on Repent for the remission of sins, Lk 24: 47. This is how it reads in the Biblical Greek, and this is how the people would have heard and understood Peter. "Repent for the remission of sins, then when you are saved you can be baptised in water by the authority of Jesus, and you can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". The translators have misled Biblically ignorant people with water baptism.

@@dsvet Everything after belief is for service, not salvation. Nobody has ever been saved by repenting of their sins. Jonah 3:10 calls turning from sins, "works." "And God saw their (works) that they turned from their wicked way.." Repentance of sins is a lifetime of works and has never saved anyone or contributed in any way to salvation. If repentance of sins helps save you in any way then it had better be perfect repentance. God's standard is absolute perfection, not your best efforts. Trying doesn't count. Not even one sin is allowed to be in Heaven. James 2:10 says that if you follow the whole law and offend in one point you are guilty of all. Oops, so much for helping out with your salvation by attempting to repent of your sins. God grants repentance unto the acknowledgement of the truth. How can you possibly trust Christ alone for salvation when you are also trusting in your performance? You absolutely can't. You've got another gospel of faith plus works equals salvation nonsense here. Mark 16:16 "He who believes and is baptised shall be saved." "He who believes not is condemned already because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God ." Many people believe that Jesus is necessary but not sufficient. They treat Jesus as a supplement to their righteousness. Jesus is not the supplement to our righteousness, He is our righteousness. When you have believed on Christ alone for salvation then you have repented unto life and God immediately declares you justified and you are baptised by the Holy Spirit. Hence, "he who believes and is baptised shall be saved." Nothing to do with water baptism at all. Peter tells us that water baptism is the answer of a good conscience towards God. Paul says that he wasn't sent to baptise but rather to preach the gospel. Obviously water baptism is not a part of the gospel message. Ephesians 4:4-6"..One Lord, one faith, one baptism." Not two baptisms!!! Holy Spirit baptism saves you. You are adding works to the gospel message and most assuredly you are going to split Hell wide open someday!
