I think we could see "the metaverse" happen before 2030... _if_ we define the "metaverse" computing era as "the time when more than 1 billion humans spend more than 4 hours per day in virtual or augmented reality environments." But let me know when you think the Metaverse will happen in these comments!

Great video. I still have a hard time imaging what the metaverse looks like as it takes off. Firstly I am not sure what would be the driver - entertainment (games, video) is a clear driver, but I have a hard time seeing it scale to 'metaverae' levels any time soon. I think work/productivity would be a better driver to get things started, but it is much less mature. It must make sense for general individual work, not just collaboration or design work. Secondly I have a hard time imagining the current style of headsets truly taking over. I think the fact that you can't see your surroundings (directly) and the fact that people can't see your face are big detractors in the short to medium term.

I’m more excited about mixed reality. Imagine wearing a pair of smart glasses can transform the boring surroundings of my neighborhood into epic mixed reality world - I still have to physically navigate the real physical space, but with “metaverse” world layered upon it. I think once the metaverse platform becomes mature and largely adopted, people will become very creative in its use cases. Look at the internet - so many applications (be it useful or just for fun) today could not have been predicted
@voidstar1337

re: The idea of AR or "smart glasses" -- this idea made me more at peace with people pulling down statues. But I realized with AR, if all we have is statue pedestals, then with AR one could idealize any statue they want on top of that pedestal. If you identify and honor so-and-so, just AR depict whoever you want on there. It's a huge change that wrecks current "tour busses". Plus I think it's a little "inbred"-thinking to make the world look like how you want it to look - diversity is more than skin and physical things, but we need a diversity of opposing thoughts and ideas. So I'm not saying this is all a GOOD thing - but it is something AR could potentially offer. And "when pigs fly" can become a thing now.

The problem arises when those AR glasses connect to the internet and more personal data than ever can be harvested.
@voidstar1337
@voidstar1337 2 года назад
@@ilowqualityripeverything7886 Not just "your" personal data, but also "presence" information of the community - facial recognition on everybody you pass by. How about this: what if AR projects data automatically about everyone you're passing by? People with criminal records, high-lighted with "danger" indicators? What if the system cross-references with wealthy people, so you know high-rollers are around you (business owners, etc), or maybe doctors or educators? How about icons above people's heads indicating things they are currently interested in -- clubs, sports, hobbies. Maybe even 'relationship status', indicated by a symbol virtualized over people's head? Maybe these could be offered voluntarily, but passive ID scanning is difficult to stop. I get the counterarguments here -- "what are we really solving with all this?" i.e. can't people just talk to each the old fashion way? I suppose a kind of "split" would happen - like we have this split between urban and rural now. This next frontier might be a kind of "hyper-society" or "cyber-society" of those willing to partake in this omni-information system - for all the positives and negatives. I don't have such a strong ego that I'm worried about compromises in personal information - no, I'm not an open book, but on the other hand I don't have anything to hide (from the government). And sure, that's easy to say, until they come after you -- or worse, a mistake or a bitter person frames me for something I was never involved with. Maybe blockchains help some of that, by making it very difficult to corrupt records. // Recall that "nations" is a fairly recent concept. To make modern society, we gave up freedoms - we all have a society security number, etc. And we're tracked by cameras now anyway, in the cities, with all those cameras doing license plate and facial registration, in real time. We've long forgotten what real true freedom means, but I hope that cost has been worth it -- for some amount of peace and prosperity, that resulted in technologies and quality of life that our ancestors couldn't even imagine....

I think a split is probably eminent between those groups to an extent. It doesn’t help when things are subjected to words like addiction or that what someone does has no purpose. In that logic I mindlessly consume books that serve no purpose. They are a tremendous waste of time as the value of those books are entertainment only. The same could be said for cloud watching…a frivolous activity indeed. I hope that people continue to understand nuance and complexity as we continue to move forward as a society. That we continue to apply compassion and empathy towards complexity and allow people to enjoy what they like how they like it with out judgement. Wether that is fishing or online chat rooms.

I'm kinda worried about the physical and mental health implications the Metaverse could have. Eyes are adjusted to constantly be focusing on objects of different distances rather than one fixed distance which is the case with phones and headsets. There is also the implication of declining fitness and health with video games replacing sports as popular competitive entertainment as he said. Mental health wise I think going from a complex virtual reality back to the real work could be incredibly depressing. Who knows the implications! But I doubt the correct infrastructure to deal with these implications will be set up just as it isn't with social media. And I think it will be almost impossible to control how people interact with the Metaverse meaning that a dark web will also form here but be way more realistic. Thoughts?

I then took a gym membership and go to the gym everyday for 30 mins just to stay healthy, gaming has yet to impact me negatively. its fun and i have to taken steps to avoid its health consequences. cant say much abt eyes tho. also sometimes i take a break and go out to parks and such which is very relaxing. u said that it will be depressing, its actually the opposite tho, i feel very nice taking breaks from the high fantasy crazy worlds that i immerse myself in. its a good reset before i go and start another game. i think it will be the same with the future metaverse devices. i mean people didnt use phones but do now and still meet and live life at times.

If this takes off the way Mark is predicting, the problems were seeing social media and constantly present technology have on psychological and cognitive development in particular is going to look healthy in comparison. Imagine growing up with every impulse ready to be fed at all times. Something we’re already starting to see with virtual schooling and smart phones, only amplified by 1000. It’s crazy, we don’t even understand how social media and connectivity is influencing development because it’s developing faster than researchers can keep up with. So the consequences on personality, social, cognitive, and developmental psychology are not even completely understood yet. But we’re already seeing increasing rates of personality and mood disorders and anecdotal evidence that suggests that what’s happening to children brain development as a result of all of this connectivity is not great.

This is absolutely terrifying. Neglect of the physical world will inevitably result in neglect of our most basic primal needs as human beings. Sunlight, exercise and human to human physical relationships are vital components in what makes us, us. Without sounding too ominous I think this leads to a dark place. There's a reason depression and suicide rates have been climbing steadily. People lived harder lives centuries ago than we do now, yet were they less happy? I can't help but see a ready player one scenario playing out, but with more dire consequences.

Think about the privacy issues with such a system in place along with AI. Think of the control that these companies will have over people’s lives. Do you really want to give up even more privacy and control to the tech billionaires? Back in the 80's, we called this concept Cyberspace (from Neuromancer). Although there is a difference - "cyberspace" was more deliberately associated with being inside the system of a computer (Tron fashion, or the old animated cartoon Reboot), so you saw interactions of communication across a bus, guards over ports, etc. It's odd to me that for all the visual effects that VR and "metaverse" offers, we feel the need to replicate our classic universe rules (physics effects, "walking" on a planar surface, etc) -- maybe because our minds can't quite capture the idea of how to even control a much more articulated being, like something have in 8 arms and can see a full 360. Anyhow, yes, the "metaverse" should lead to establishing a protocol or standard of how to flow ones earned-assets from one verse to another, not just sandboxed MMO experiences - either seamless (ReadyPlayerOne style), or maybe a "passport" system where assets of one are converted and exchanged to another (Robolox having its own economy and currency compared to WoW, etc -- those for now being small island verses). Funny, Richard Gariett also had his idea of "shard" universes back in the Ultima series (UO '96), a similar preview to this idea.
@GlennDavey
@GlennDavey 2 года назад
Octupii have decentralized brains in each of those 8 arms to control it. We are still human. No matter what you do in a metaverse it's just fancy computer graphics attached to the face of a walking sack of meat.
@voidstar1337
@voidstar1337 2 года назад
@@GlennDavey Forget the graphics. You can be in meta with just a command line terminal interface. The graphics are just one expression of the system state and algorithms involved. In BDO, for the most part you can't trade items (there are some exceptions). What kind of society/government is that? Imagine in real life we had that restriction - like imagine a native American tribe that came up with a culture like this: you took effort X to make item Y, which is bound to you -- you are physically prohibited from transferring item Y to anyone else. So inheritence is not an option (you can't gift the item Y to a friend, even upon death). That kind of thought would never happen in the real world. It's not quite Communist thinking. Back when Cambodia was being taken over, c. 1979 - the new regime ideal was everyone had to work. It's like "if you want to eat, you have to grow the rice" - and on one level, that seems fair, makes sense. But I think one of our greatest boons was the idea of leisure and giving a certain portion of society leisure to just think great ideas and try stuff, so they're not out in the field all day growing rice. But there's a balance - it falls apart when the ones gifted the time of leisure are dumb, corrupt, and self serving (and so unfortunately, eventually there is a sort "reset" -- like the French Revolution; chaos theory is ever present, as things are naturally dispositioned to disorder and decay, we must take great effort to maintain things in an order - an effort we fail to sustain indefinately). MAYBE meta is just that next evolution of leisure, and if you're not bogged down with physical things, some wild new ideas come about (Eddison maybe wouldn't have made the lightbulb if he was busy growing rice). When we're "virtualized" down to atomic level and can walk a system from the inside out, it's a whole new perspective and insight. // A day will come when people realize they can be quadriplegics and function just fine in meta -- no need to feed those arms and legs, and 3D print some artificial lungs and a heart, our "sack of meat" gets smaller and smaller, to eventually (perhaps) "uploading" our brains. // And it's interesting to consider that now a person can be content their whole lives with like 600 sq ft housing, there is absolutely no desire or need for the classic 2000+ sq ft house... Housing market crash, indeed.

The smart phone's great value isn't in the device itself, but in the fact that it allowed millions of often individual developers with little funding to create applications for it. I think the scariest thing about a 3D Metaverse by far, is that it might bring back dead people. Not in the way anyone's thinking, and for sure it'll lack fidelity. But what if the AI solves that infidelity problem.

this meta thing goes against principle of death..... like you have to let go of people, making a vr version of the deceased does nothing but meddle with the persons feelings towards the deceased. forget about that, even if some of us dont believe in a religion, its obvious that humans wont survive long, our existence is going to decline sooner or later, it useless to spend money on something that teleports us into a fake dimension...… metaverse is nothing but trouble

11:16 That’s when announced the new name of his company. He didn’t say here’s Metaverse. Just like the Information Highway, it was not built in a day. It would take time, innovative efforts from many companies and continue to evolve. We are just starting to see decentralized autonomous organization popping up everywhere, decentralized finance spreading our wealth or decentralized Apps exposing to true high availability and so on. This reminds me when iPhone giving us the way into the mobile browsing when not all sits were ready for mobile edition browsing experiences. It takes time but bold moves from companies like Facebook or Meta, NVidia, Adobe, Roblox, Microsoft, Apple , Google, and list goes on. But what Facebook or Meta did was, triggered a paradigm shift of the whole ideology of the Metaverse. Before that, people were still innovating toward Web 3.0. But Facebook/Meta said, let’s do it! 😎

one factor that sets second life apart from most other platforms, one "could" concider a metaverse, it that's its one single cohesive and persistant virtual world, that's built and constantly changed from within, by the users. (a bit like a minecraft server, but infinitely more elaborate) unlike MMOs and online games, such as roblox or WoW, or the likes of VR chat, that are inherently scattered over unchanging worlds or maps, and instances of those. dated as it might be, over 18 years old, but SL is still an incredibly interresting showcase, of what a virtual world can be.
@Katy950
@Katy950 2 года назад
Yes but interface of SL is bit complicated for me to use, i hope in future Second Life Developers will make one shop and one interface more simple like wear clothes, or make clothes/accessories fit the body, i like alot SL but interface it has to become more intuitive for everyone.
@Ucceah
@Ucceah 2 года назад
@@Katy950 that's not gonna happen. you couldnt simplify the UI, without simplifying the platform itself. and SL is inherently very complex and nerdy, and gives the user almost limitless control. but i have to agree, that it's an absolute handfull, with the complexity of a foreign operating system, and a steep learning curve, making it .. not the most acessible to newcomers. in 2011, linden labs did try to streamline most of the UI into a sidebar with the SL viewer 2, sacrificing a lot of the multitasking and customizability options of the client. it was pretty much universally hated, because it felt needlessly limiting, dumbed down and partonizing to existing users. but you may wanna give some 3rd party viewers a try sometimes. PS: there is the second life market place, at least. initially the whole ting with clothing was much easier, but with mesh avatars and clothing, it's a royal pain in the ass, i'm doing my best to avoid. SL is very open, and content is exclusively created by users, with no enforced standards. so often the parts of one avatar maker will not be compartible with another one's.

I spent $1000 on a Steam Index VR headset. It makes for a great paperweight. Seriously, I used it for maybe a total of 30-40 hours. I have it sitting beside me right now, untouched in over 8 months. Why? a few reasons. First, there honestly wasn't much to do with it. There were a whole host of demos to play, and like only 1 or 2 actual games. Since then there was a crappy VR MMO that launched. A few fully dedicated VR games that kinda suck, to be honest. Anyway, the 2nd problem I have is eye strain. I wear glasses and so I have to wear them while wearing the headset. I can play for maybe 10-15 minutes at most per day without ending up with a severe headache. I tried to just use it as a virtual theater to watch movies on. I can't even get 1/2 through a film without my eyes hurting. So yeah, I have a $1,000 paperweight.
@tompenny5684

Yeah that's a good point. Thoughts?

The idea of this nft/blockchain based metaverse is basically a second internet for vr users. To create a second vr internet or “metaverse” would require an operating system as universal as windows or android, and a universal file for the avatars like the jpeg is for pictures. Meta wants this but only for themselves, essentially a new internet that they own 100%.

As we've discovered and mapped out all the continents and partitioned all the land masses -- we can still explore and map out portions of the ocean, and underwater cities (or even countries) might someday be a thing -- but we're too fragile for space travel. The next "frontier" may very well be a virtualized country -- for a language, we're already seeing a bit of a return to hieroglyphics (emojis, in a way) and shorthand notation, and people are playing videos back at 1.4X speed or faster just to save time. And currency, being replaced with crypto -- gold is far better used as a corrosion resistant material in electronics and spacecraft, the idea of precious metals as currency is done. What stops an entire country forming "in the metaverse" with its own culture, language, currency? There is no bedtime for kids in this verse, there are no timezones, and while you can be blocked by others -- for the most part your thoughts and ideas can't be censored. And not only does gender not matter in this verse, an individual can hold many identities at the same time. Bluray was trumped by the rise of streaming. 3D printing could be trumped by AR and everything going virtual. Not only "print is dead" but the entire physical world is dead -- I don't need tablets or any physical thing, if I can just virtualize everything I do. I like VR experiences since you don't have to deal with insects and bug bites -- but I do miss the sensation of smells, of a well cooked meal or scent of flowers. 1000 years from now, they'll see us so archaic and primitive, just as we look back 1000 years from now.

@voidstar1337
@voidstar1337 2 года назад
@@Sirdon77 Absolutely, in the near term. I live out in the country, off-grid - solar arrays and well-pumps for water. But as that equipment fails, yep, I still depend on manufacturers to make them (balanced with my own contribution to afford whatever the repair cost might be). And that's a concern I have about "city folk" who may take for granted on just how things work - like in the movie Fight Club or even Fifth Element, there is some dialog related to idea that it's a lot of people running around that ultimately makes things work -- from water treatment, power plants, road maintenance, etc. -- like the ending credits of a movie, all those hundreds of people involved that you never saw. I've had co-workers scoff at the idea of having kids - like it's "inconvenient." But when I look at a worker - like a delivery person or mechanic - I think "that's somebody's kid" and appreciate all the time invested in creating that talent. So, if people get too overly selfish and stop having kids, then r.i.p. a lot of services we all take for granted. BUT, here's the thing..... The only thing stopping us from invitro birth farms is our ideals of social norms (the old sci-fi Space Above and Beyond had some dialog related to this), plus our great ideal of equality -- which is certainly a noble ideal, but at the end of the day there are classes: you have some people who aren't quite college material or just are content at a daily grind job, versus bully-like people who are hard driven AND have great ideas (put another way: not everyone is an Elon Musk and holds meetings at 3am and works till 2am the next day, it's some people being "better" but certainly some people are more "driven"). Also, long term, we may replicate our entire intellect into meta or AI -- sure, that may be a couple hundreds years away. But that's sort of key to space travel - we can't travel as bags of water, but we could travel as a small SD chip. Right now, it's a fad to emulate things like eating, drinking, waste, stamina - as we try to replicate the physical universe as we know it. We'll get over that fad eventually, and when someone can make an NPC that's so advanced you can't tell it's not a traditional human intellect (i.e. maybe "uploading our brains") then we're on that path to being done with the physical world as we know it, and our traditional physical limitations (both the pain of that, but also the joy of that). No it's not a change that happens overnight, but it is a path we're going down with this meta-stuff. // Put another way: there are people in Japan who go months if not years without ever seeing another person physically. Absolutely that lifestyle only exist due to the generosity of thousands of people they don't see - to keep power running, deliver food, etc. One of our greatest inventions maybe 120 years ago was the high-rise and elevators -- people got off ground level, and could spend more leisure time just THINKING and doing stuff in their own space. Yes, we still have a dependency and relationship with the physical world - but this meta is like the new frontier, a new wild-wild west, and there will be a growing divide between the "old" and "new" world. Physical bodies get smaller, maybe you don't actually need legs and arms to function in meta -- yep, absolutely that sounds "weird" to most of us right now. But if our physical presence is wrecking the environment, or our physical existence is destroyed by biological warefare, well - we can migrate into a virtual resilient network (yea, someone could pull the power plug - but it really is a resilient network with data-centers now in orbit).
@voidstar1337
@voidstar1337 2 года назад
@@v8matey The "real time" fact checking and censor ship is concerning to me. As a related idea, YT automatically scans for copyright violations. Separate to whether you agree or disagree this is a Good Thing or Not - the point is: it's automatically enforcement of policy. There is no moderation or human element involved. A judge can have leeway in sentencing, to some extent. In our town, they tried those red-light detectors and automatic tickets - it sent so many tickets, people weren't paying it, and it just made a mess for everyone, so they've removed it (since trying to make money off it couldn't exceed the cost of the system, something like that). My point, people talk about judges being corrupt and such - but that was part of the humanity. Say you stole a car -- that's bad. But a judge (and jury) could look at the circumstances, and maybe say "well, ok, someone stole your baby carriage with your baby in it, and you were compelled to borrow a car to go after that..." and decide community service instead of jail time (it's just a hypothetical extreme for the point). But when you have a robot servicing justice -- no human element, no compassion or understanding the context. "you played 2 minutes of Lady Gaga, your video is banned." Or maybe you played 2 minutes of some audio from some international band, that you don't even know if they exist anymore. The old system was never perfect, but it allowed for some "forgiveness" that meant diversification - people could mix and experiment with stuff. I don't want every YTer spending time trying to come up with original background music - that's not efficient. On the other hand, no, not every artist should get a mansion and million dollars for their 3 minute music creation. To phrase this another way: in the old days, it was 1:1 where an enforcer found a violation, and sentencing happened. Now it's imbalanced, we have automated enforces constantly scanning (and consuming associated resources with that scanning) for violations -- there is no leeway, there is no "grease" to let the "small violations" alone. This relates to the overall idea of lack of modern moderation in any digital content - we can't pay a moderator enough, and in any case, they can't moderate fast enough when EVERYONE has a voice. // So there are two points here, (1) the issue of copyright and its duration, and applying that on a global scale -- I'm in my own little local market, trying to make a spoof video for no-profit, but I'm banned because a portion sounds similar to this Mongolian band, etc. (2) the robotic and automated enforcement of policy. As a small example, back in the 1980s when my older sister worked at the skating ring -- she could let me in for free. Just a perk of the job. Now-a-days when everything is fully automated and systematic, there is no leeway, and these implicit "perks" that made really boring jobs bearable are all gone. That's the cost of automated enforcement of policy. Another small example is at drive-thru - you've got the person taking orders and handling your money, then they ask you to move forward so they handle the next customer more quickly. My old pastor met his wife by taking time to chit-chat at a drive-thru. Good lord managers, give these people some relief, let them slack a little.
@voidstar1337
@voidstar1337 2 года назад
I'll try to simplify the thought here: to "escape" in the past, Europeans went to the Americas and Australia. That option (on land) no longer exists, and ocean and space is very difficult for us. So, the next "frontier" could very well be virtual reality/cyberspace - where conceptually physical political entities may not have any jurisdiction (particularly if they can't associate a virtual identity with any physical one). Europeans "escaped" Europe and religious persecution. Perhaps meta is a potential way to escape modern social persecution - to either create your own verse, or to create island-verses of like-minded entities. And with enough entities involved, at what point does it become its own "nation" of sorts with its own sub-culture?

@@jaujud I know? But they're not as extreme as you think Example: No. Not much that already exists willl be restricted to the metaverse. Because A LOT of people are very paranoid of the idea of the metaverse the companies already running services in real life would lose a lot of money from people who don't use the metaverse.

The amount of people complaining about Facebook on Facebook is staggering. Sure Zuc gets bad press and shouldn't be the mouth piece for FB - but Facebook is still the dominant in social media by a huge margin.

Can't come soon enough for me. I think it's going to be good for the planet as well. The more people are consuming in the virtual world, the less they'll be doing it in real life. Which means less waste. Big thing now will be the ability to transfer items over from one point to the next. Let's say I buy a virtual T-shirt in the meta verse and then I hop on to VRChat, I'd like to show off my T-shirt there as well.

Idk man. I love the idea of a ‘metaverse’, but let’s be honest they’ve been working for 5yrs. on trying to find ONE gaming title that was the turning point for VR (the must have title). Yes, there’s been some great titles, but nothing that made everyone say: I have to play VR. And now we’re talking about making entire worlds in VR? It will happen, but it might be another 20yrs.

My vision of the future is AR/VR being used together. For example let’s say you are in a surgery room. The people there would be in AR while the people watching would be in VR. The AR glasses would have LiDAR technology to map the room. Then track changes in the real world keeping the not important stuff (the stuff not moving) static and the rest dynamic. The cool thing is that people would be able to join this room in many ways. Video, Audio, maybe even in character mode. With different devices computers, phones etc. NFTs would be made of you in real time so that no one can take your identity. Most items would have a small chip or image that can automatically morph into your 3D world. Everything would be in an ecosystem. That’s why think apple/google would be better for creating the Metaverse. IOT can be the way to create unique NFTs if your devices, and current MMOs would be what the world would be modeled. Looking forward this would be replaced with VR MMOs and then Digital Devices.

As a programmer I think the Metaverse is definately the way forward. Idk about Mark but I hope other companys will do well with the concept.. I truely hope it becomes the next internet, mainly because I have so much love for computers and the digital world. I think what it offers us is amazing. ive always been very sick, and the digital world was my ONLY way out.

Great video. One little thing though, I believe the iPhone was announced at macworld and was the main product presented and not a "one more thing". Though, Steve Jobs definitely was known for that line. Totally agree Mark was trying to aim for Steve Jobs but lacks a lot of polish and the a product that people can get their hands on. Jobs knew how to design a solid product, build hype and get media attention.

Yes, the iPhone was the main release of the night. Steve really knew how to create simple amazing products, but never had a single effort for social interactions, so for this part Mark needs to aim for himself tho. Lol

The metatverse is a Work-in-process. However, how you enter it or access it will be on different levels. You will be able to access via your PC and iphone and even game consoles but this could be called level 1 access. Lever 2 access would be the AR including phones, ipads, VR glasses and transparent overlay screens in cars. Level 3 access would be VR. Level 4 would be the brain interface. Level 5 ...maybe a 100 years from now..would to upload your brain into the verse and fully live there as a full virtual entity. So accessing the Metaverse is different to the actual metaverse and I think people get that mixed up.
