When you die, in Australia

In this episode we talk through the logistics of dying in Australia, what decisions need to be made, what paperwork is required to transport the deceased, and we'll point you in the right direction if you don't want to go down the path of a traditional funeral home.
It's good idea to think about these things and discuss them with your family, or even go and pre-plan your own funeral arrangements with a funeral director, so that when the time comes, your family isn't burdened with decisions about how you may have wanted things to happen.

My dad was in palliative care in hospital. When he passed the funeral directors came and picked him up straight away. We did not want him in the hospital morgue. Mum was palliative at home and was picked up from home and we helped the funeral directors prepare her for transport. My daughter dressed and prepared mum at the funeral parlour as she worked there, she also did dad as well, which she said was a honour to be able to do for them. Here in Bunbury, Western Australia our local funeral parlour William Barrett and Sons do Dying to Know Days and this allows people to tour the facilities and ask questions and be given information on whats involved and what you should be prepared for.

You ladies are awesome! I never miss an episode. I’m a retired traffic accident Reconstructionist from a city close to St. Louis, MO I am retired now, my wife named Tracey passed from cancer in 2020 at age 52 and I lost my daughter on 07-01-24. She was 35. What you do is so valued and helps people understand more about your job and how the process works! Keep up the awesome videos and I have to truly say that “Trish” is absolutely gorgeous. Hello from Oklahoma!! (USA) I have to say, I have been involved in funerals that had been pre planned and those that haven't. The ones that were were much less distressing than those that were not. I planned my dad's before he passed, and it was very comforting to know that had been taken care of. After that, my husband and I planned and prepaid each of ours. We hadn't even had that conversation yet, and it is very comforting to us now that our kids won't have to make those decisions on top of their own grief.

This would have to be one of my ‘favorites’ that I’ve watched on your channel.. I watch this topic a few times but usually from overseas RU-vidrs. I had no idea that we have all those options in AUSTRALIA,love the ‘pre plan’ option… I’ve lost so many close to me and sometimes you go back and think, ‘ wish we did this or that differently’, now I know that we can actually be more involved in the arrangements,not that I would wish for someone to pass away. My saddest memory was off my brother in law and his wife losing their 9 day old son,at birth they discovered a hole in his heart,so they were expecting it,but the sad part was,we were there when he took his last breath and the funeral ppl came and picked him up so fast after his death that the grieving parents didn’t have much time with him! 💔💔💔 Love you both from SA ❤

Oh how terribly sad 😢 No funeral home should be in a hurry to take away anyone. Many times I have getting to a family home to pick up and take into care they loved one and you just know when it's not time to go in, I have waited outside a family home for 3 hours before till it was the right time to take the person into care. Sorry your family went through that. Take good care in SA 🩷🩷

Always enjoy your videos ladies! Always informative and so honest. I do think that there Australia allows a lot more ways for a funeral to happen including the prep of the body than the U.S. does. When my parents died, they both had pre-paid, pre-planned burials. At each of their funerals, my sister immediately wanted to change things, but I told her they both had a pre-paid, pre-planned burial. The funeral director like you said pulled out the paperwork and there wasn't much she could have done about it, other than their wishes. For me it was so nice not to have to plan a funeral and everything that surrounded it. They chose everything from casket, color of their clothes, music, everything and both ask to have a vault. When my mom passed my sister tried so hard to not have a vault and not spend that money. The vaults were the only thing that wasn't paid for but they requested one. Again, the director pulled out the paperwork with their wishes and she couldn't help but agree. So much easier for the family. When my husband passed suddenly, he had an autopsy, so it was a couple of days for him to come back to the funeral home. That at least gave us some time to think, plus he and I had talked several times what we might want if we died earlier than expected. I do wish that he and I had done years ago what my parents did planning it out ahead of time. But at least I did have time to think and make everything perfect for his burial and he made plans years and years before how it would be paid for. I've thought a lot lately about doing a pre-planned so my children won't have to worry about making arrangements and they will know what I wanted. I have talked to them some after my husband passed, so at least they have an idea what I want. Just wish I had the money to pre-pay for my burial, that would make a big difference, but I've made plans to cover that when it does happen like my husband did.

Thanks for the wonderful video, ladies. I appreciate all the information you're giving us. I would hope to think that my mom was handled with care and love. When she passed away in January I did read a horrific story that happened in America many years ago. About a funeral home called the lamb mortuary. Where the funeral director was actually taken. Body parts and stuff out of the. Deceased and selling them even gold fillings and everything was pretty horrific. It's horrible to think that stuff like that happened years ago I really hope that doesn't happen anymore.

I have a question I don’t think it pertains to this particular video but I’m sure you have answered it before but I’m not sure. If a body is donated to science to keep them preserved for as long as they have them which for some people could be there for years that they have the body for, do you use a specific chemical to preserve them for that long or is it strictly embalming fluid you use??

It is important that, if you don't pre-plan, at least let your loved ones know what your wishes are. When my Mom died, Dad had her cremated and her ashes placed in one side of a companion urn. When he passed, he would be cremated and his ashes would go in the other side. That much, I knew. I asked him what he wanted after that. He said something about my brother and I taking turns keeping the urn. I suggested, since he was a proud Navy veteran, being interred in the local national cemetery at Fort Indiantown Gap. I drove him up to see it and he loved it. He died from Covid in January 2021. Since the world was shut down, we had to wait until the summer and then I planned his and Mom's interment. They are interred in the newest columbarium complex with a beautiful view.

If there is trauma to the face on the typical side facing out of the coffin, can or would you place the body in there in the opposite direction so the non damaged side of the face is facing out?
@Areyoudyingtoknow
@Areyoudyingtoknow 26 дней назад
Hi, we use coffins here, so the lid comes off completely so we would just turn the coffin to the appropriate side. If in a casket we wouldn't place anyone in the wrong way round, I would turn the head slightly you can see the undamaged side more but still have the side with the trauma covered up. Thank you for your question take care 😊💚

Here in the states if you commit suicide your life insurance will not pay out. How does it work in Australia with the assisted suicide? Love you two!
@Colin_Richard
@Colin_Richard 26 дней назад
I’m happy to stand corrected, but from my reading… in Australia, insurance legislation enables insurance companies to deny death benefits to people who die by suicide but, certainly in legal terms, Voluntary Assisted Dying is not suicide. One of the key differences is that a person must get a permit for VAD, requiring that they meet certain criteria. VAD is the *means* of death, not the *cause* of death - the cause of death is recorded as whatever illness or condition the person was suffering.
@kimcat7320

@@kimcat7320 You’re welcome. There are strict conditions to meet for a VAD permit, so they’re not just handed out indiscriminately. Terminal illness is a key consideration, and it’s all about allowing a person the choice to end their life with dignity.

That movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert was seminal to my understanding of who I was back then (I've never been a drag queen but seeing a film which was gay in it's nature way back in 1994 certainly made it easier to accept my own existence).
