As a Devils fan - yes. The ref caused this. Though I do think if it's obviously icing, the players should act that way even without the whistle.

@@WuRuiDe It's on Luke to protect himself and he let up before the play ended. If the ref had blown the whistle there's way less chance we'd be having this conversation.

It wasn't all the refs fault. Its on the player delivering the check to avoid putting the player getting checked in a dangerous position. Yeah the ref was late on the call, that doesn't mean the player placing the check isn't at fault, he didn't have to check him dangerously there. Wtf are you talking about...

The onus is on the attacker. Any hit that sends a player into the boards is boarding.

Idk. It was obviously icing. Everybody knew it, including the Philly announcers. Nobody would have been expecting a hit at that time. Therefore it was a hit on a defenseless player. Not exactly clean

If Hathaway hadn't sent Hughes into the boards, I doubt it would have been a penalty Boarding is the action where a player pushes, trips or body checks an opponent causing them to go dangerously into the boards. This includes: Accelerating through the check to a player who is in a vulnerable or defenseless position and driving an opponent excessively into the boards with no focus on or intent to play the puck, or any check delivered for the purpose of punishment or intimidation that causes the opponent to go unnecessarily and excessively into the boards. The onus is on the player delivering the check to avoid placing a vulnerable or defenseless opponent in danger.

@@soulknife20 ….the hit was clean he didn’t do it reckless and the only reason he went into the boards so poorly was due to the devils players own action because he didn’t play until the whistle was blown. He played it like it went already and faced the price for that. So again the hit wasn’t boarding because his check didn’t check any of those boxes you listed. His hit wasn’t the reason the other player went into the board bad it was the late whistle and the other player not being prepared for a hit. There’s a reason the players own brother was more possess at the ref than the guy who hit him because even he knows it’s not on the Philly player.
