Had a discussion with my wife about the lack of black women in the gym, at first she thought I was exaggerating then began to notice for herself that there are not a lot of black women utilizing our gym. It made me wonder why don't black women as a whole has a better appreciating for the fitness/healthy lifestyle? Yes, I know some of you do workout and props to you, but way too many of our black women DON'T

I just came from the gym and thought to myself "where are all the black women at?" That's how I found your video. lol Its not just the gym though. Its working out in general. Driving through different cities, I see mostly white women jogging. No black women at all. I've been to quite a few gyms and I currently use my university's gym, there are hardly any black girls there. The University obviously have some black girls because they play sports. But gyms not related to my college, you will not see any black girls. And its not just black girls. Its Hispanics as well. Asians and white women do be at the gym though. The black girls saying they want to be "thick" is just an excuse to be lazy. You can be "thick" and fit. *Cough Serena Williams*

Honestly it's their hair. 95% of the time. I converted my family to wearing all natural and it was an easier way to motivate going to the gym. When you're natural , you're not worried about sweating your style out....

Hey thanks for the comment. Hair! For some reason, that is something I didn't think of. Kudos to you for being natural, funny thing is the creamy crack is leading to fibroids and everything else but they just won't let it go. Funny thing is most men respond faster to a woman they see working out than one with a new "style" ah well…I guess we just have to keep trying to free their minds!

Can't you sweat ya hair out in high temperatures?..., Maybe having sex? Cuz some sure don't stop having sex. When I'm in the gym the ratio..../from my experience/ from other races and black is usually for every 50 other races I'll see 1 black woman. smh

I'm black and work out everyday. And guess what I don't go to the gym you don't have to go to the gym to get in shape. I have exercise equipment at my house. Your body doesn't know if it's at the gym are at home working out. And say some black women not all. So since I workout does that make me not black?

Black women need to wash their hair on the regular anyway. It have to stink after a week...grossss. I'm black and I wash my hair 3-4 times a week. I started working out on my own. Bought a $99 stepper and some 10pd weights and got busy. Within a year I went from size 13-15 to 8-9. It's not easy but oh so worth it. You have to change your eating habits and drink water. Drop the sodas...sweet tea and juices thats not all natural.

@iamme7664 lol. I had to go back and read my original comment for this has been a year or better now since I commented. Anyways, most ppl aren't in the gym at 6am. That's a good time considering no one is hardly there. Peak hours at gym are 3 to 6pm. I prefer 10 or 11 am because zice grown accustomed to it and I feel best for working out around that time. Unfortunately I'll have to go in late afternoon after work once school starts back....plenty of blk women (most age groups)are at my gym and hispanic women .

I workout, but I’m from Columbus Ohio and it’s not a lot of women of color in the gym. I travel for business and utilize every fitness center, Park, or beach in every state I travel to and I take my nutribullet with me because I’ve been doing green smoothies for 3 years now and I’m 42. Trying to encourage them, but it’s hard because a lot of women of color are not interested in their health. It’s a shame, but I’m going to keep trying to educate, motivate, inspire, and help our women to start taking care of themselves.

I workout daily, but i love how everyone has jumped onto this (trick daddy) bandwagon of black women not being in the GYM!! why don't we also address where are black men in the black household?! or why are black men so quick to date other race that want to look like the black woman by buying their butts, breast...because our original standard of beauty intimidates other races, almost fair to say the black man too. I mean, you want "Becky with the good hair" right! The European standard of beauty has always been to look like the black woman, hips, lips, butt, legs, eyes, but curse the original product from the "Mother land"...I will offend some people but its okay!! The black woman has finally achieved what everyone has always wanted her to be, but yet thats not enough, she has always been shunned by everyone but this time even by her self because she could never be that light skin girl, that white girl, have that good hair, now she too has come to the point to justify herself to everyone because she has lost herself in this society that keeps calling her everything but her name!! Please!! where is the root problem of the black woman's beauty? the weeds, cause thats were society should start to repair the black woman! Im curious, cause most black women I know are too busy taking care of some of these brothers that don't take the pleasure of taking care of the black woman....Simplicity still doesn't take away from education, there is a lack of education in the black community of what diabetes or any type of disease can do to the body...for example when patients take their insulin but do not eat cause they have to have fasting sugar test/labs, then wonder why their sugar drops to the point of having a diabetic coma.... or come to the doctor's office to a blood pressure check without taking medication...i mean i can go on and on...most black people eat things that are not good for them because that is what they can afford to feed their families or what they are accustomed and processed foods high in sodium. In most black communities there is a lack of organic produce and most of the time organic foods lets face it is costly to a large family. The media doesn't play a good roll in the African-American community either because most of the movies and these housewives and things like that don't portray the black women in good light. You are what you eat, but today, education plays a major roll. African American women are the number one race for masters degrees or higher in any race of women, BUT we are reduced to butts and thighs, nor do you here that in social media of any kind. I know a lot of successful women of color that workout, and have successful careers but don't have black men supporting them because we are categorized as "bitch" or intimidate some black men with our careers. At the end of the day, we can go on and on about this subject, but education can come from one family member teaching another family member, or using alternative ways of cooking by substituting, regular flower with coconut floor, or using, different cooking oil....at the end of the day each one must teach one for the community to change its mind set about a lot of things.

Yo 1st off thanks for such a lengthy response. I almost did a video to respond to you which I kinda did and didn't so you may see it posted in a day or two lol. Thus, you should subscribe lol. That said, first off kudos to you if you working out, obviously that means you are not one of the women I am talking about. Read my comment section, this is not an isolated observation. Many people see this as well. However, I believe in this instagram age it is becoming hip to take selfie pictures in the gym working out so more women are doing it. Next, I can't really speak to the black men running to white women because I don't share that. Nothing is more lovely to me than a black woman especially with natural hair and none of that weave mess. But the problems in our community are so systematic and you have to consider the amount of brainwashing that has been conducted over the last few generations. Hell, BET alone was heavily involved in making the lightskin, exotic look more desired. As far as food, you can afford what you want to afford. WHOLE FOODS takes foodstamps just like any other grocery store. Farmers markets are a cheaper alternative as well and some places have co-ops where if you work a few hours they will give you a box of fresh produce. We put money toward what we value. I don't have cable, most households do. I put my money toward my food and lifestyle more than I do toward my entertainment. Again we pay for what we think is valuable to us. You are right about the media, but we can''t control that. That is why we need to make our own media. Checkout sites like Mediablackout and others that are pro-black.

I know that this video is 4 years old, but I felt the need to tell you about my experiences in my college gym. During my freshmen year I wanted to get into fitness at my university and get get into shape before I entered my professional program. Me being shy and timid I walked in the room with the treadmills and ellipticals only to have a couple of black men fat shame me. Now if this only happened one time I wouldn't have thought anything of it, but not only did black men fat shame me, but the women did as well. Me, a newbie at working out, quit before ever starting. I've tried going back because my body is a joke to them and only fit people are able to use the gym apparently. After two years and 15lbs being added onto my weight, I want to try again because I don't want my 270lb to turn into 300lb. Plus, I noticed that my blood pressure has risen to 139/89. That's pretty much high blood pressure in a nutshell. And you are right about the black women not working out part. Even though I could count the number of black people in general on one hand they still find it necessary to make it seem like a lot of black women work out when statistics tells a different story. Just about 70% of black women on my campus are overweight. I feel bad whenever I see this pattern not only because it gives black men on my campus a excuse to date white women, but also because I am apart of that statistic. Just keep getting the message out there. The people in this comment section are obviously not looking outside of there playing field if the don't see the obesity epidemic in the black community.

As a woman of African descent who loves exercising (and has pretty much been active my whole life), i am one of those folks who doesn't go to the gym, and primarily does exercise in the house. If not in the house then i'm walking or riding a bicycle. There are so many 'home-based' workouts these days; there are also many free workouts on the internet (from BeFit, Fitness Blender, etc.), so it's not necessary to spend fees on the gym. My guess is that this is where many other folks do their workouts as well. i used to go to the gym and got bored. i realized i actually worked out more in the house, with Insanity, T25, and other HIIT-type workouts. in my experience i got more fit doing HIIT in the house than spending time in the gym, so i stopped going. i'm also not worried about my hair so much- the more you work out, it actually stimulates hair follicles. The more you work out, the more likely you are to drink higher quantities of water. i am also vegan ( for 23 years so far) and do intermittent fasting. i usually work out by myself since most people i know (regardless of ethnicity) tend to not want to work out with me on my schedule, 6 days a week. i see so many videos on RU-vid, with other women of African descent, working out. There are also many walking groups, dance classes, etc., populated with women of African descent. It's important to expand the notion of working out as being some place other than a gym. You certainly did mention some of the options, but i've seen far too many people name the gym as the only one. i love my fro (and always will); however, i also see more and more women who wear weaves and wigs (and do makeup channels) working out, so i am not gonna knock anyone with a weave. i don't watch television, but i'm also not gonna knock people who watch a lot of tv, since many of the women who do ALSO have videos on their channels speaking about their health and fitness journeys. There's plenty of 'naturals' who are ignorant as well. i WILL say that it's always a pleasure to see more women of African descent lifting and doing strength training- strength training is crucial as we get older. i do kettlebells and such now, but when i find the right person to train with, i hope to get more into lifting. i have been training in brazilian jiu jitsu and striking for a couple of years, and that is total body conditioning if there was any- but you need solid cardio in order to properly do it. i definitely hear what you are saying; however, 'western' culture encourages unhealthy lifestyles, regardless of sex. i see people of varying ethnicities who are overweight. Advertisements promote a fat-free diet, when fat is not the main issue- it's the amount of processed foods and sugars people eat- something you mentioned. Much of the 'fat-free' foods carry tons of processed sugars. Fats and cholesterol are important for bodily and brain function. Many traditional cultures eat plenty of starches and fats, but they are complex starches and healthy fats. Many people also do not eat enough. People don't get the proper amount of calories in, and they complain of gaining weight, no matter how much they work out. If you under-eat you will not lose weight. Their bodies are most likely holding on to water, or nutrients. Because they don't see weight loss, people get discouraged. Before i started intermittent fasting i did a 'diet log' and worked out for 1-2 hours and never lost much weight, and felt relatively unhealthy despite eating healthy (and was also going to the gym). These days i work out for an average of 30-40 minutes a day (with the fasting), and feel much better. As a trainer you know more about things than i do; i can just speak from my experience. (In terms of your 'bowel movement' comment, many of us are backed up because we're also going to the bathroom wrong. The toilets we use contribute to backing us up, since we're supposed to squat) There are women i've personally seen who are overweight, and do work out- but they get made fun of because it's assumed they are not working out. So i sympathize with the fact that they don't go to the gym (to avoid that ridicule), and may workout in the house. We all have to start from somewhere. Men are allowed to be as chubby as they want to be, and i don't see a barrage of videos entitled 'why don't black men work out?' i think the expectations for women to look a certain way are far too limiting, as opposed to holding ALL of us accountable for our health. To top it off, people of African descent are living in a society where whiteness is valued above all, so while the question of why 'Black women don't work out' is valid, it's generalization still leaves out the narratives of many of us who do. i've seen comments on videos which say, 'Why are you working out- you are too fat!' A woman is trying to get her health in order, and she is still ridiculed. It makes sense to me why a woman would just go and hide. You can't win, no matter what you do. And finally, very few people (in general) are dedicated to hardcore exercise as a lifestyle. i understand why people don't want to work out with me, so i am not mad about it. i've been told i inspire people, so if i do, that's great. i know many of these videos (including yours) come with real concern; i just wanted to share my perspective. Have a wonderful day!

Wow! Just Wow. This is an awesome response and I thank you for putting the time and thought into posting it! I didn't differentiate in this video but if someone is working out at home that is fine in my book. However, I use to spend a great deal of my time at the city park training and practicing for track and field and like I said the number of black women working out there was pretty limited in comparison to the black men and white women. I'm not really sure about your premise of the dad bod being so welcomed. Atleast not in African American society but I could be wrong. I don't usually see women praising guys with a dad bod though unless it's women who are not really in good shape so they prefer a man who won't make them look bad. I also feel that in general the mindset of the African woman is a bit different than that of the regular African american woman. I hate to say it but our women seem to be a bit more worried with their hair and/or not looking like a man. I hear it too too many times. And as of recently there has been a move to get liposuction, plastic surgery, or wear these crazy weight belts which in my opinion do nothing. At the end of the day, it's not that I am not concerned with the other races in regard to working out however, I am more concerned with our race from the stand point of health. We have too many people dealing with conditions that I feel could be controlled through decent diet and exercising. Thanks again for the comment. I hope to see you comment more often. be blessed!

Kudos to you! I haven't been in the gym after the COVID pandemic but I created my own homegym so I've been doing it that way. I use to have a group class and we would do weights in our classes. My ladies seemed to enjoy it. It's empowering to feel yourself get strong. I don't understand how women think they will look like men after a few weight sessions. I always you to clown and say, you have men who lift weights and still can't look like a man. :o) Have a great day! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for being kind but direct with your message. Its true that we black women need to do betters. I used to be fat, not huge but in the 220s but when I haf my son 5 years ago I was motivated by him to get healthy snd stay healthy. I live in Memphis and the gym that I go to is 80% black so thats progress.

That's cool! As more women are going natural and seems like they are trying to get healthier as well. I applaud you though, we have to do everything in our power to be around for our kids. Too many black folk are dying before they even make it to their 60s!
@andreatate6702
@andreatate6702 10 лет назад
You're right dying before 60 is tragic when its because we failed to workout or eat right. I can say that there are ppl out here who have so many children and responsibilities that they dont have time for anything but work and sleep. My parents had 11 children to care for and provide for and they "never" got a dime of welfare. They wanted to make it on there own. They did make it but my dad became disabled in 2004 @ 46 years old now he does dialysis from home and my mother does his treatments and takes care of him. All those years of putting us first has caused them to shorten their lives. For the ppl who just think black women are lazy I just want to say there are some women out here who just have no time like my mother.

I agree with @Cindrell Harry. Its the hair, most let their hair rule their lives. I say let your body rule you and your lifestyle. I too wear natural , it can also be straight with a blow dryer or flat iron at any time, no need for relaxers anymore. Its black and hispanic women mostly whose hair kills their health. But its transforming, many are going natural... its a great thing for women be natural and workout on a daily basis.
@MarkBFitness504
@MarkBFitness504 10 лет назад
Oh yes, the natural revolution is in full effect. I wonder how long it will last though. Being natural has become popular so everyone is doing it. I'm wondering if it is a fad or a genuine awakening. Now if only women can wake up about taking care of their bodies! Working out is deeper than just being sexy, its about being healthy and functional...Thanks for watching! Keith Ross it's not more evenly a large amount of black women have lower body aka pear distribution but it's not exclusive to black women by any means. That body type looks better 30 pounds overweight than an apple or a box body shape.Culture is the traditions, customs, and values of a society not genetics. skeletal structure also has nothing to do with how fat distributes itself inside a person's body.

@keithross6599 8 лет назад
+Ask8613 yes skeletal structure does.. look at Hobbits, little people "midgets"(or whatever you supposed to call them) all short and fat!!... when you look at basketball players tall and slender.. just like muscles on a tall person look different then muscles on a short person..

I didn't make this video as a way to body shame..it was more to encourage yall to get and be healthy.Kudos to you for the diet life changes. When I was training folks, I use to tell them to never worry about the scale. It's always about how you feel and perform, and yes the clothes will tell the difference. Your journey should be about you though, not about seeking the approval of someone else. My motto has always been stay in your own lane!

Black women work out, most just don't work out at the gym... Black woman workout outdoors and in parks, on trails, on the beach, in they apartment gyms, at each other's houses, at the Y, boxing gyms, circuit gyms, pilates gyms, Barre gyms, at home, reception halls or public spaces for group workouts, in our own neighborhoods, female gyms--cause it's hard to get a workout in when people watching you too hard... It's ironic that you think Black women don't workout (some don't, but some do) just cause at your gym they ain't there...dude 😆 U funny... I see us Black women in a lot of places working out, we clearly just ain't in places you be... Don't stereotype all Black women, we do work out.

@@brendadaviswilson9243 As you can see, I made this video back in 2013 so things may have changed a bit for the better thanks to instagram and social media in general. More black women ARE trying to get it in but I would still argue that you are the OUTLIER more than the norm. As you said, I see countless 20 year old females who look like health and fitness is the least of their worries. But, if you are getting it in more power to you. Keep encouraging all that you can. I don't go to a typical gym anymore myself but my wife and I religiously do BEACHBODY workouts. Have a great day! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Sure, at about 10% of the demographic of black women. But by and large the majority of Black women DO NOT engage in regular and consistent exercise. @@aaronrivers64 don't know where you getting statics of 10%... I'm not gonna let this sigma/stereotype ride...As a Black women---We do workout out... Just because you don't see it don't mean a thing... Black woman don't be going under the knife like that so these amazing bodies that are maintained that Black women carry are by proper eating and exercise... Some folks are slim and skinny and look in shape and are not and some folks are big/fat and work out regularly... If you're using physical looks to gauge who in the gym and who ain't--that ain't gonna work... Now there are those that are slim/skinny that are fit and those that are straight up fat and lazy, I do know that... For some Black women weight loss ain't the goal, fat loss is--wanna stay big in all the right places but be toned... For example Black plus size models, they workout but the goal is fat loss not weight loss... Bodies still Big but super toned... There are so many Black women I know directly and indirectly that work out (majority use personal trainers not at the gym though) so I can't agree with the stereotype, so we'll agree to disagree respectfully.
