Beijing’s population has grown rapidly in recent years, as migrants from all around China come to seek jobs. Urbanisation has led to economic growth for the city, but it has also brought in issues like traffic congestion and a housing shortage. To ease these pressures, the Chinese capital launched a massive campaign to drive out impoverished communities.
Mr. Wang, who asked us not to publish his full name, runs 4 hostels on the outskirts of Beijing for migrant workers. And he organizes a get-together dinner every year to celebrate the Lunar New Year with those who can’t go home for the traditional reunions with their families.

It's called relative deprivation, and it can really have large psychological effects. "Relative deprivation is the lack of resources to sustain the diet, lifestyle, activities and amenities that an individual or group are accustomed to or that are widely encouraged or approved in the society to which they belong." Whether you consider yourself rich or poor depends on the society and social group you belong to. People can perceive themselves as falling short (of the society they're accustomed to), even if they may be materially richer as a person somewhere else who is, however, performing better than their society expects them to.

This video is making me cry. My family was considered lower class when it was back in the 2000s. We had a rental apartment even it was small. My grandma had to carry me from the 1st floor all the way up to the 6th. I cried a lot when I was a baby. The neighbor next door could not stand it so they slashed my dad's tires. As he mentioned, having a car back in the 2000s in Beijing was a huge deal. I wanted McDonald's or KFC once I cannot recall. That's the only time my mother said no to me to food because my mother did not have any money (She took me and ran away for a little while since my dad had violence issues. But he is a complete role model father now.). Then later in my life when I could actually remember things (5 or 6 years old). We bought 2 studios (2004-2005) and it costed us around 1.2 mil RMB in total. You can't really do currency exchange when it comes to income. Our bottle of water is 1 RMB and in the US it's around 1 dollar. So yes, you can say it cost us 1.2 mil dollars back in 2005, 2006. Just for 2 studios. It is insanely expensive to live in Beijing. We kept paying off our loan until 2008. The Beijing Olympics really helped my dad's business so we were able to pay off the rest of our studios. We moved shortly after (My first year in middle school). The apartment was between the 3rd and the 4th "ring". (FYI Beijing is built into rings. Ring "Zero" is where the old king lived and Tiananmen square is near there. The more inner you go, the more expensive the houses are). I thought my family was doing fine since we own 2 apartments that have 3 bedrooms, a huge living room, and a huge kitchen. And each of them is worth more than 10 mil. Until my classmates started to "compare" with each other. And they would brag about their family. Makeup something even they don't own it. (This is bad competition. If your family is poorer than theirs, they are gonna look down on you. I still do not know where they got their pride from, I mean it is their parent's money. Not theirs.) One person I know who truly has that kind of money is my childhood friend. His younger sister and I went to the same kindergarten. We lost contact during elementary school. I skipped a year and got into the same class with him. And we figured out that we lived 5 mins away from each other. His family just moved to the hugest house you can ever imagine. 3 floors house with 2 garages. Huge front yard and back garden. BMWs, Rose Royces... The house is worth more than 100 mils. I thought my family was poor, yet I see poorer people than my family. I thought my family was wealthy, yet I see wealthier people than my family. My father has 8 siblings. He was born in 1971. In a small village. We were so poor that our family doesn't have a lot of generations. When other families had 5 generations in 1 century, we had maybe 3 because we couldn't afford it. I get called "uncle" or "great uncle" by some 60 years old dude if I go back to my village. My father was laughed at when he said he wanted to be a millionaire. Yet he is the only one out of the entire village who succeeds. And all of his brothers and their kids are working for him now. I do not consider my family is "rich" anymore since I have seen a lot and been through a lot. It is not my family that isn't wealthy, it's just we are wealthy because we got a chance to be. And we are "wealthy" compared to other families. My father is just like this guy in the video. He gave almost 7000 people a job. Yet he donated all of our cleaning supplies when covid hit everyone unexpectedly last year. I know that I want to become someone like this guy in the video, someone like my dad who is always helping others.

The worst thing isn't being poor, the worst thing is feeling poor. Those men have themselves, like brothers, if others treat you with respect you forget you're poor. That's the reason people want to have money and properties, to be treated with respect, in a lovely way. That's all we need. Respect, being accepted and loved. Of course, we have basic material needings like food and refuge. But if we feel ourselves loved it makes poverty bearable.

It seems that if they are illegal, they are de facto legal. Notice in the video that it says that the government had started to demolish these buildings when they deemed them to be "safety concerns". For them to do that, it means that they know where they are and are judging their safety. China has a lot of things like this, where it is technically illegal but they look the other way because it provides an important service.

I used to think that as technology improved, the standard of living would rise and eventually poverty would be eliminated because it would become so easy and cheap to obtain necessities and so little work would be needed to sustain that. I thought things would become like the Jetsons, where George Jetson's entire job was just to press a button that started the automated factory and yet him and everyone else were given everything they could need, because, why not? That fictionalized society produced so much that there was no reason to horde wealth anymore and the minimum standard of living and labor was more than enough for people to live comfortably. Now that I'm more experienced, I understand that the eventual result will never be that, instead it will be more like the movie Elysium. Technology will improve and the resources to help everyone will exist, but those resources will be purposefully kept away and taken away from most of society and horded by a smaller and smaller group at the top. Poverty will exist through artificial means. Technology was supposed to make life easier and bring the bottom of society up, but instead due to the greed of those in power, technology is instead used to replace the poor. It used to be that the wealthy needed the poor for service, labor, and commerce, but increasing automation has reduced that demand and effectively made the poor and middle class worth LESS to the wealthy. Eventually they won't need us anymore and will cast most of the world aside while they rule from a paradise like gods while we fight each other for their scraps. Poverty doesn't have to exist anymore, but it will be made to exist and slowly made more severe. After all, the wealthy won't feel as special or important if the standard of living gets too high.

In many legal systems, 'Illegal' is not the same as 'criminal'. Violating housing laws often falls within this bracket, as it is usually (though not always) victimless. This allows people, especially media and policymakers, to talk and discuss various aspects of the illegal issue without fearing jail or seizure of assets. But then again, such lines can shift from time to time, depending on how benevolent governments and regimes choose to be.

Well since China is supposedly or was supposed to be Socialist and towards a communist society, they have already reduced poverty by alot. The issue is development hasn't full reached the entire country I think and China follows a sort of state controlled capitalism to keep the economy growing so the big cities have alot to Earn but it comes at high risk of high living costs and housing issues and such. If the guy stayed at his village he would have lived a decent sort of normal life but couldn't have earned much But my coming to a big city he can now earn but needs to face the high risk issue. The poverty rate in china is 0.3% only and soon, it will be 0% and then only they can start focusing on equal wealth distribution to make a communist society finally. It will take another 5 decades maybe ?
