Where Do Bass Go After They Spawn? Post Spawn Bass Fishing Tricks!

The bass are going to vanish, do you know where they're headed? The post spawn is a mystery to a lot of anglers. It was easy when you could see the bass in the shallows but once they're gone it can get tough. Of course, if you know where to look, its some of the easiest fishing of the year. Come along as we explain step by step how these fish transition, and what baits you should use to target them.
The post-spawn transition doesn't happen overnight. As waves of fish move up to spawn, other waves move back out. Some of the fish stick around the shallows after they recuperate but most head to outside structure for the Summer. Pay close attention to where Tim recommends based on the type of lake you're fishing. On one lake it may be outside walls, on another it could be humps, on another it may be ledges.
The baits you throw to catch these fish will also vary between types of lakes. Below you'll find links to some of our favorite baits for fishing the post spawn and early Summer patterns. All of the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. We've also included our favorite colors and rigging where applicable.

@@basschaser9356 I use several depending on the jig and location. Footballs and clean water pitching I use a 7’3”MH Akylos,in the grass or punching with Hack Attacks I use a 7’H Myakka and a 7’6”H Akylos if im wanting a softer tip. I pair the Akylos with 7.1:1 Cyclones and the Myakka has an 8.0 Hamarr, all from Sixgillfishing.com

Hey Tim what model BassX was that topwater rod you had in the video ? I have the 7'2" medium heavy moderate and I tried tying a topwater walking bait on it and Love it for that technique It has the moderate bend to keep treble hooks pinned, but it still has enough tip to walk a bait really nicely.

Here in southern NY, first spring fishing. Some success thanks to your advice. Saw the following patterns: after ice-out, caught fish on finesse paddletails, then finesse jerkbaits. This bite lasted about 2 weeks, then the rains came. After the rains some places went quiet, others I had to resort to the underspin with a keitech. Now, thats not very productive, and the current pattern is shallow bass with shakeyhead lures. One of the quiet places is a pond fed on the side by a very active creek, I call it Moose Lodge pond. In Moose Lodge Pond, I believe I am seeing males on very shallow beds. In particular I tried several baits on one of these fish, and absolutely no reaction at all. Even bumped that fish, with a lure, and he barely budged. Do these patterns make sense? What else should I try?

I wish I could find out the reason why I see large schools of bass that swim by my dock every summer May-August. I’d always assume they’d be deep with the water temp being so hott but these fish are 5-12lbs and 10+ in the school. The water is extremely clear on a ski lake that’s deep up to 100ft in some places

Here in Oregon I fish mostly ponds cause there's no good lakes close to me. Deepest spots in those ponds may be 10-12 foot. But I rarely catch any fish in those holes. Pre-spawn, spawn, and post they're always pushed up to the banks. And in cover. I'd love to get out and fish a bigger lake more.

What do bass do in this situation? Pre-Spawn. It's late April/Early May on a 27 acre lake in Colorado that's only about 15 feet at the deepest. We have a few days in a row of 70 and 80 degree air temps. Some males are in the process of making nests and some have already made nests. Some females are starting to move to them and some already have moved to them. Then suddenly theres 2 or 3 days where air temps drop to the 40's knocking down water temps significantly. During this cold weather, do both males and females move out to deeper water and hang there until water temps come back to where they were? Or do they remain in the shallows, having already committed to laying eggs? Thanks!

so what about a natural lake(not a reservoir) which used to be part of the Missouri River. The Army Corps has since built a levy on the river side. Long, narrow body of water with basically no cover(just docks and rocks), not very deep(maybe 14 ft deepest), mud/sand bottom(no grass beds) and it doesn't have huge drop offs or channels. The lake is quite small, and is pretty stained water but not murky by any means and has 3 "bays" or coves. Some of your info I am able to adapt to my lake, but sometimes it's frustrating bc it's literally unlike any other lake around here in Nebraska and I can't find any Geographic maps of it..

Definitely whopper plopper but try to fish it a little slower if possible, natural colors too. I personally find that perch in the 90 size works well. Also a walking bait in the 3-4" range works well, also in a natural color. If you can find a current break, a popper is another good option.
